Aw, forget about lyrical quality.

Asmodean, if you're ever in Hawaii, USA I've got openings in my band waiting.

Seriously.

Hi, Asmodean.

After listening to the songs once, I'll give you my first impression (duh!).

I'm also going to focus on things I feel could be improved, seeing as I never saw how just heaping mindless praise on someone made them better at anything.

I generally like your verses better than your choruses, where you seem to get a bit clichéd.

If I were you, I'd adjust the solo guitar sound. It sounds a bit as if Slash suddenly joined Counting Crows or something. Genre-clash, and it doesn't work, in my opinion.

I also partially agree with IYY that the lyrics could do with some revising. To specify, I found that they were lacking in flow at times, and they also came off as a bit trite. "I declare my love for you" and "you're the only one who can heal the hurt inside" aren't lines that sets my heart aflame, to put it that way. I'm doing a bit of songwriting myself, so I know it isn't easy. Now, I'm in the camp that believes that lyrics' main purpose is sounding good with the music, and would gladly sacrifice a piece of meaning to make the flow more natural or the rythm better fitting.

It also sounds like your bass player didn't have his chops together. Sounded a bit uninspired and untight.

Final point of critique (for now, anyway) are the songs. They sound good, but after listening once (and that's not much, I'll give you that) no melody lines, chord progressions, breaks etc. got stuck in my head. I lacked a certain something to set it apart from everything else.

That said, well done. You have a nice voice, and with some training I think it could be even better.

And that song sounds nothing like Save Tonight. Geez!

Hmm, I wasnt sure where to link this one, but this thread seemed fine. this is a song by two of my best friends, entirely their work ("the ant" is a metaphor). Some form of art-pop-rock. they also have a video clip for it, but the tv and radio stations dont air it that often cos it doesnt suit the "markets standards". see what you think.

Asmo: if you post the lyrics I'll be able to critique them better, but I agree with most of what DonGio said.

Svarog: sounds good, shame that I don't understand the language. And it's so close to Russian, too, so my brain is saying "you should be getting this!" but I'm not .

Your friends song was pretty good, Svarog, I liked it even though I couldn't understand what they were saying. Actually, now that I think about it...I usually prefer music without lyrics or those which are sung in another language, that way I can focus on the melodies & rhythm.

The Lyrics

Macedonian version - for iyy to practice (IM me about the alphabet if u want)

Mravka

Vo tolku golem svet, tolku surov svet, malechka…
So strav da ne bide od goleminata povredena.
I nikoj ne se grizhi dal ke unishti
se ona shto i znachi vo svetot nevidliv.

Refren:
Ti mozhesh, znam sakash, probaj da ja cuesh,
da bidesh onoj shto prv ke zastane
zad nea, do nea, pred site shto mislat

Refren: Ti mozhesh…

Niz tie mali dusi
ima li srca pobednichki?
Chekorish tolku golema.

Refren: Ti mozhesh…

English version (slightly modified, what sounded bad in english; words in brackets are the original)

The Ant

In such a big world, in such a cruel world, little one…
Fearing the greatness that could hurt her.
And nobody cares if they destroy
Everything that means so much in her invisible world.

Chorus:
You can, I know you want to, (try) listen to her
Be the one to stand first
behind her, next to her, before all who believe
but arent above others. (Don’t be) You arent like them.

Is it so hard to turn around and ask yourself?
She too lives, she has meaining inside her.
Is everything you cant see at first glance
without thinking so unimportant?

Chorus: You can…

Among those tiny souls
Are there victorious hearts?
(You) She walks with (such) greatness.

Chorus: You can…

Let's see here... I actually thought your music was very good.  You have a good way of mixing songs... which shows me you understand music.  The way you bring in the guitar solos and choruses is quite effective.  And the lyrics aren't actually bad... it's just they are very typical.  But nothing sounded out of place or sloppy like a lot of starting bands do... when I was listening it was as though I was hearing a rather talented band that just hasn't hit it big yet.
By the way, it sounded like you were using chimes in the guitar solo in no guarantees.  A very cool guitar solo I thought.  My guitarist uses chimes in our instrumental song "blue skies" and it makes a huge difference I noticed.  And those kinds of notes prove that you are quite a talented guitarist.
All in all I was impressed... oh and great vocals man.  I know what it's like to sing (there's a lot of pressure on you).

Thanks Rage, yep I do use chimes a few times in the No Guarantees solo, a few artificial ones in the main part then finished with a natural triplet of them for the final chord of the solo for nice effect.

I'm glad you think we sounded together, we'd been practising those songs non-stop before we went into the studio to record them, I probably could have played them in my sleep

Nice to see you back btw.

Yes I remember practising like crazy before our first show... It's actually very stressful and it can be a lot of hard work...
Hey Asmo, you have to give me some input on my music... I need some thoughts from somebody else in the music scene.  Just check out Rage08's music tavern when you get the time...

How about blatant lies?  Or Copyright Theft - is that accepted on your forums?

ps Asmodean hasn't responded to PM's - but I'm glad you all liked the songs

Usually, when one makes accusations such as this one, he backs them up.

Not doing so doesn't give much credit to your claims and I have to wonder what the point of your posts are if you've never backed these accusations up with facts that can be verified.

OK Guys - just to clear a few things up, My name is Brian T. Mullan and I was also in Outhouse Cookie - I'm (ashmedly so) The Beautiful South fan that Asmodean speaks of.

When I was first directed to this site I was pleased to see so many people giving + feedback on MY songs and then I got to reading the posts!

Honestly, I was amazed to read Asmodean (Seamy) claim that he was the singer on these 2 tracks (Love Declared and No Guarantees) because he has 2 great tracks where he did sing lead - The Groove and The Hurt Inside!  He does however sing backing vocals on the others - but I believe the posts on this board to be misleading.

My initial postings were simply by way of winding Sewamy up - and in response to how mad it made me feel!  Seamy and Gerdy split the band and to have him come on here (or anywhere) and to claim ownership of MY songs and to claim that it's him singing just got me a bit hot and bothered!

I sent him a couple of PM's (and they were a bit criptic so in fairness he may not have know what he was being accised of) and he didn't reply!

I'd actually like to get in touch again Seamy - coz there's a wee proposal I'd like to put to you and the other guys - (and no it's not a reunion)

Folks, again I'm sorry to infringe on your territory but I felt that I had to come on here and straighten this out!

Thanks again though for all of your positive words about the songs - and for those constructive negative ones!

Brian T. Mullan
