LORD OF THE RINGS!!!!!
Lord of the rings is the absolute best Fantasy Novel ever written...perhaps, the last unicorn by Peter S. Beagle? oooor the lion the witch and the wardrobe by C.S. Lewis......Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol? WHat do you think? Tell me

Like the classics, eh. No, I think that some of the modern stuff (like Robin Hobb, Ursula Le Guin) are better, more sophisticated. LotR reads too much like a history book (unless compared to the silma*yawn*rilion) and the other ones you listed are a tad too childish. Not that childish is bad, but it's almost a different genre. I have plenty of respect for C.S Lewish and Lewis Carrol, but while their books can and are often enjoyed by adults, they are ultimately geared at children and so would classify as high quality fairy tales rather than actual fantasy. Maybe not, who cares.

When I saw this thread, I was afraid it would be another praise-thread for PJs movies. Luckily, I was wrong.
I have to second IVYs ( ) estimation of LotR, though, since I think Hobb, and maybe Kerr (when I've read a bit more than 300 pages of her stuff...) or better in the form of fantasy/storytelling and so on...
But Tolkien is still my #1 fantasy author favorite; I love the LotR, I'm one of the few people I know of who has read and enjoyed the Silmarillion. Hell, I even enjoyed the Unfinished Tales!
As for C.S. Lewis, I must say that I enjoyed his works very much. "The Final Battle" (or whatever his last Narnia book was named) is the basis of my new found religiousity. Sadly for the Catholic Lewis, it's not his kind of religion...

There are much superior works now...but LOTR is still a classic that I like.

The LOTR are very excellent books but i like those books that put a picture of what u r reading in ur mind right when u read the first paragraph, Tolkin's LOTR u have to read it for a while to get a picture.
But other than that they are excellent books!

I made it a personal mission to read the LOTR series before the movies came out, and I succeeded. The books really make you notice things in the movie that most people would miss.
Also, the novel The Return of The King has a real treat that the movie doesn't have. People who have read the book know what I mean. It's tied with Helm's Deep for the best chapter in the series.
