Literature is not just for dorks (fave books)
Alright- here are a few books that ive read that were really good. If you have any, you can add.
-Eragon
-Wizard's First Rule
-The Chronicles of Prydain
-The Redwall Series
-The Outstreched Shadow
-Song in the Silence
-Dragon Weather
As you can see alot of the books are SF and Medieval Fantasy but wats wrong with that?

1. Wizard's Spell compendium volumes 1-4 documenting all spells and their specs from all schools in alphabetical order from A-Z.
2. Encyclopedia De Magica volumes of all recorded magic items and properties in volumes 1-4 covering all known items ever recorded or thought of in any fantasy setting in alphabetical order from A-Z.
3. Ancient Artifacts of the highest significance. For example, Hand/Eye of Vecna the demi-lich.

I still have to read Wizard's First Rule, I never finished it for some reason. My fave book I guess would be Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Funny as hell, and unlike I'd ever read.

The Count of Monte Cristo is still the "most exciting adventure story ever told". It even says so on the back of the book.

The Count of Monte Cristo must be exciting if that's what it says on the back of the book, but it somehow failed to stop me from falling asleep every time I tried reading more than half of it. I swear, 30% of words on the first few pages are names of places and people!

It's much better than any of those fantasy books mentioned above.
The guy's arrested, and thrown in prison for something he didn't do. Then he breaks out and psychologically ruins those who put him in prison. How is that not a good story?

The story is good, I just don't find it to be effectivly written. And I never read the books mentioned above, so I won't comment. They don't seem like the best of fantasy to me, though.

It could be written better, I agree. It's like Dickens, good story, but just written in such a way that can be annoying sometimes.

The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell. I love those books. Some books you want are the ones made by Michael Ende (The Neverending story, Momo and so on).

Count of Monte Cristo is good when taken for what it is. Like Dickens, it's very episodic for the simple reason that if I remember correctly, it was written as a series in a magazine. Each month or whatever, there would be a new installment. It was just like watching this weeks Law and Order or reading this months comic book. What I've found is that things like Dickens and Dumas are best read in installments, so they're great gym reading when it's too cold to go outside and you have to sit on the damn bikes or go on the stair climbers. I read Count of Monte Cristo one winter that way and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Dunno about you people.. but I've been reading some of those muythology dictionaries & stuff in the past time...
1. Diabolical Dictionary - found out many things about the demons of the Inferno like Belial, Azazel and many more and the importance of each of them, about the Sabbat, about some of those stuff like necromancy, geomancy and many others..
2. Symbols Dictionary - almost everything you can think of.. Like I found out that long hair is very important. In the Medieval China for example, if you haven't got very long hair you couldn't get some important jobs. In medieval Europe, the servants had to have very short hair, and kings long hair and many more. I have long hair! 
3. Romanian Mythology - very usefull stuff about the local mythology. Like I found out that some of our ancestors, on the battlefield, caught the enemy with a rope around his head and dragged him on the hills while they were on a horse until he was decapitated.. Wanna find more?

The Count of Monte Cristo is a great story. I think another reason it might seem a bit less readable is the original is in French written in the 19th century. So the translation and older language may play a part.
I just finished The Da Vinci Code. I wont call it well written or my all time fave, but it is interesting.

Spy: Tinker,Tailor Soldier spy trilogy by John Le Carre.
(also a great BBC production)

Andre Norte- almost all of her books ( this is about altenative history of our world)
