I played H5 only few times. This is inappropriate place to ask this.
There's a thread of H5 bugs and errors.
I think you should post there and somebody will reply.

Dom the reason that quick combat is not working is because it is an important battle that can affect the later campaigne such as the last mission in the last campaigne when you must re-take the Griffin Empire from the demons. They want you to be behind the wheel when you win or lose so it doesnt make a major mistake.

Hi, Merapsco.

Yes, now I realize that the designers did it on purpose, which is what I suspected. I still think it's wrong. Plus, I'm not behind the wheel for the battles. I put it on Auto-Combat when it goes to the Combat screen, anyway. So the computer is deciding the battle, just like with Quick Combat. Why force me to sit there for 10 minutes to watch the blow-by-blow, instead of just giving me the results instantaneously, as is my preference?

The results will be the same with Quick Combat and Auto-Combat, so I think it was a dumb move on the game designers' part. They have not forced me to take control of the battle; they have just wasted my time.

Just to be clear, Quick Combat is a Game Option, where it never goes to the combat screen and just gives you the results of the battle. That's what I have selected. Auto-Combat is something you can select on the combat screen, that lets the computer handle the battle for you and you just watch.

The bottom line is they should NOT ignore what a person has selected in the Game Options. That's devious, in my opinion.

Hi DomFontana, just letting you know I'm wading through the TotE map scripts to mod out the forced combat. Turns out it's easier to check for than I thought. Expect a mod shortly.

Yes I know what quick combat is and I use it all the time but I find that you lose less troops when you use normal combat instead of quick combat cause you get to use the spells you want and choose who to take out first.

I agree with you Merapsco. In all the other HOMM versions, I would use Quick Combat, most of the time, but then sometimes take control for certain important battles. Besides losing less troops, you could lose a battle with Quick Combat, but win it, if you handled it yourself. When you take control, you can do a better job.

However, in HOMM V, the battles take way too long, so I really try to avoid manual combat, Plus, my whole point was that the designers ignore the quick combat option and there is nothing in the manual that says anything about this.

I'm new.

Hi everybody! I'm new here on HC, but not to the whole Heroes series, which I've been playing for years now. My first game was Heroes 2: Succession Wars and I instantly fell in love with the whole concept of it. Now that I've played Heroes 3, I feel like no other Heroes game could possibly top that. Anywho, I'm looking forward to having a great time spent here and with all of you.

Cheers!

Hello,
I'm Jackson. I live in California with my best friend, we both used to love Heroes of Might and Magic. We just had the idea/urge to get back into it. I never played HoMM 4 or 5, I've heard about a lot of the changes they made and they kind of scare me... although I'll admit, I am slightly curious, and I'm tempted to download the demo for 5.

Don't listen to Corribus he's.... our local Floating Evil Eye. And who'd believe a Floating Evil Eye, right? H4 isn't worth a play he's just trying to trick you! It's horrible!

Naaah it's a matter of taste really I thought H4 was a disaster but there're enough people who'd say it's great. Downloading the demo sounds like the best idea. If possible try to get the one for "Tribes of the East" (or maybe that's the only one out there...?) H5 is definetly more like H3 than H4 was in my oppinion. Anyways check out the Temple if you have questions about H5. Hope to see you arround.

Hi, I'm new too and just wanted to say hi to all the newcomers.

Jackson, I've played all the HOMM games and expansions, since HOMM I.

I agree that HOMM IV was a disaster. I didn't like it at all, but HOMM V and its 2 expansions are much better, but not perfect. I just finished Tribes of the East, so I've played everything. I'll give you the Pros and Cons of the game, in my opinion. Others may disagree and consider some of my Cons to be Pros and vice versa.

HOMM V and 2 Expansions:

Pros: Great graphics, music, and sound effects. You can zoom and rotate the view. Campaigns and Scenarios have intricate storylines and cut scenes that draw you into the action. Nice interface superimposed over the Adventure Map, so the Adventure Map is full screen. (In HOMM IV, the map was only part of the screen.) Has caravans that deliver creatures to your towns. Allows for new alternate creature upgrades. Most things work the way you expect them to. More similar to HOMM III than HOMM IV was. Improved Combat screen. You can have dynamic battles, town fly-bys or turn them off, and you can select different camera views.

Basically, the gameplay is the same. You collect the same resources, build up your town and armies, capture other towns, and then defeat all your enemies. Those are the usual victory conditions, but there is also the Tear of Asha, which involves finding the obelisks, revealing the puzzle map, and then digging and finding the artifact. When you bring it to one of your towns, you get a tremendous bonus. There are some new artifacts and spells. The abilities are similar, but there are also skills you can attain depending on what abilities you have. Plus, there are special skills that are available for each individual race. There is also a Map Editor and a new Random Map Generator, which is very nice and gives the game a lot of replay value. You select some of the parameters and it creates a different map each time.

Cons: The game is slow as molasses. The game is still turn-based and even if there are only 4 players, it can sometimes take a whole minute for the AI to move. With 8 players, forget about it. Very annoying and frustrating. Even though this is just one thing, it's a big thing. Many times it made me want to stop playing, but I didn't. I completed everything. Let's say you want to return to your town and it will take 3 moves. I want to double-click on the town and have the hero make its first move. Then click End Turn, and a few seconds later, take the second move, and a few seconds later, the 3rd move. It doesn't work that way. You click End Turn and then wait 60 to 90 seconds, then the second move, then another 60/90 seconds, and then you're at your town. I'm making a big deal about this because it is so boring to just sit there doing absolutely nothing, while you wait for the AI to move. Also, the Saves are excrutiating slow. So if you have Auto-Save turned on, the time between turns is even longer.

There are numerous graphics glitches. The landscape looks nice, but many times it blocks the view. Especially in the Underground, it can be a nightmare. You can't see where you're going and have to constantly rotate the view and zoom just to move. The cursor also malfunctions. It should turn to a raised horse when it's over something you can pick up or visit and many times it doesn't do that. If you're right over a resource, you sometimes have to back up before you can pick it up. Also, when you try to scroll the screen by moving to the edges, it is sometimes painfully slow. The Puzzle map is also a pain because it's black and white and makes it tough to find where you're supposed to dig, even after you reveal the entire map.

If you're interested in cheats, there is no cheat mode built in. You can read the messages on this site that tell you how to enable the cheat console. It's a convoluted procedure that involves editing 2 game script files and you have to do this for the game and the 2 expansions. Then, when you use the console during the game, it comes down from the top and takes up about a 3rd of the screen. For each new game, you first have to enable the cheats. Then, entering the cheats is very tedious. They are not simple cheat codes. They are codes to edit the script so that you can cheat and they have to be entered exactly. Things like this: @GiveArtifact("Brem", 24); gives the Boots of Mobility to the hero Brem. To add insult to injury, many times the hero's name in the game is different that the name in the cheat code you have to enter. So you have to look at a chart to see what name to enter.

I find the new magic system to be too complicated. It used to be if you learned Wisdom, then Basic, Advanced, and Expert Wisdom, allowed you learn 3rd, 4th, and 5th level spells, respectively. Now there are different schools of magic that only allow you to learn the upper level spells from the Mage Guild in that particular school. The Instant Travel spell doesn't work like the old one and doesn't let you move very far on the map. The Town Portal spell is still available, which is good, but you have to have a level 20 hero to learn the spell, which is not so good. Finally, my favorite spell of all is gone. There is no Town Gate spell. That allowed you to go to any town, by selecting it from a list.

The game is full of mispellings, which is unprofessional and makes it seem like a shareware game. Plus, other spellings are European spellings, which I'm not used to.

For the campaigns, some of them are very tricky and there are inconsistencies. The game designers sometimes assume you will do things in a certain order and when you don't, you're in trouble. Then you have to come here, read the walkthrough, and many times start the mission all over again in order to conplete it.

My biggest pet peeve is that the designers set up the game to ignore the Quick Combat option during the Campaigns, so it always takes you to the Combat screen. Plus, the battles now take really long. In the Campaigns, they can take between 10-15 minutes for one battle.

A good thing is that a particular hero keeps their skills and improvements from mission to mission. A bad thing is that in some campaigns it's important to build up your heros in the early missions, so they are strong enough in the last mission. If you don't, you're in big trouble. Sometimes, you're playing with just one hero and when he does something, it triggers a battle with the enemy and a hero from a past mission appears to fight him. You then either win or lose the battle, and if you lose, you fail the mission. So if you didn't build the hero up enough in a prior mission, you're a dead duck.

As I said in another message, I give the designers an A+ for ambition, but a C for execution. They had some good ideas and really tried to jazz up the game to make it seeem more like a real-time game, but the idea backfired. With all the improvements, the game is bloated and moves so alowly, that it's the opposite of a real-time game, and appears to be one of the slowest turn-based games out there.

The bottom line is that despite all these problems I played HOMM V and the 2 expansions and am still playing the random maps because I'm hooked on the game. Download the demo and see for yourself. If there is a HOMM VI, I hope they take care of these problems.

I hope this was helpful and good luck.

Oh I agree that overall H4 was a disaster.  That doesn't mean it's not worth a play.  It has some entertaining pieces and if you're a HOMM fan it's worth trying out just to see some of the new ideas that tried.  It's worth noting that the game didn't fail necessarily because its concepts were flawed.  It just wasn't given the time and resources it needed for full development.

Did you know there's a mod, known as Wake of Gods, for heroes III? You can check out about it here:
Wake of Gods

To answer your question, yes, I did know about that. Personally, I loved the new features of the mod, especially the Commander add-on, the revised Hero specialties and the similar tweaks here and there. It really balanced the game out and made me enjoy playing it more.

And yeah, I am thinking about trying out Heroes V, I've stopped being a faithful follower of the series when some fans trashed Heroes IV, saying it was far from Heroes I to III, and generally, wasn't worth their cold, hard, cash. I dunno, I guess it's worth a shot.

Welcome to Jackson and the newcomers, as well. I hope we have a good time here.
