Freely downloadable creatures, hero customization and more wishes (not for h4)
I post this new thread to talk about wishes for future homm installations. Ya, it is too late for h4, but never too late for future homm. Let's keep ideas in to make homm a sustainable and enjoyable game !
Here comes my first wish...............
One of the complaint about h4 (even it has not yet been released) is the fewer creatures available. How about to have free downloadable creatures from 3DO official site ?
After a certain period of release of hommX (X being any number from 5 to¡K¡K¡K ???), NWC can upload new creatures to its official site for players to download. Let me explain it in more detail:
1. Who can download the creatures ?
Only those who buy hommX from a ¡§legal¡¨ way.
2. Where did the creatures come from ?
After buying hommX, ppl can registered in official sites and contribute their ideas about creatures just like what we do in HC board. Ppl can suggest anything like attributes, specialties, origins or even graphics of new creatures they would like to see. So, you can see creatures from various mythologies, stories, or even out of imagination of fans. Of course, NWC has the right to modify and to decide whether accept the creatures or not.
3. Why would ppl make suggestion about creatures ?
Why not??
Well, I think it would be cool if you can really contribute what you think to the game you love. Besides, NWC may even hold some competition and give awards to, say, the Creature of the Month¡K¡K, and maybe give future expansion of homm for free to the winner as the prize.
4. How can those freely downloadable creatures incorporated in the game ?
The newly made creatures would be neutral creatures at first, with the appropriate level designated to it. Then they go into the random pool of all creatures and hence can appear in the maps. For those very powerful creatures, e.g. XYZ dragons, they can be the ¡§quest creatures¡¨ and be available after completion of some quest. I think how the creatures be incorporated in the maps is only a ¡§technical¡¨ question and shouldn¡¦t be too difficult.
5. How about game balance?
This may be a problem. Nevertheless, since all newly made creatures start as neutral, this won¡¦t be a big deal.
I got this idea from the game Total Annihilation. Actually, I was inspired by the comments of Gamespy on this game:
Quote:
____________________________________________________________
Cavedog kept the fans interested in Total Annihilation with free downloadable units every week. While the original set of units for Arm and Core kept the game interesting, these new units were designed to challenge existing player strategies and force players to come up with new ones.

Tell me what u think about it. Thanks.

Downloadable creatures may be cool - but they have to go with a town - so probably downloadable town is better.
The point here is that someone wants to post some creatures (posting one creature is useless by my opinion) - he can customize them and gave them attributes by using this POINTS pool - he must use all the points (the script/program should not allow to use less than it).
NWC should devise some point-oriented system - where you can spent some given points on each of creature levels (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th).
Say you have 1000 summary points (this is just a number - don't take it with anything specific).
You can have from 50 to 150 for 1st level, 150-250 for second, from 250-350 for third and from 350-450 for fourth.
Of course at the end those points must sum 1000
Each of this points may give you another points for LIFE, ATTACK, DEFENSE, DAMAGE, SKILLS, TYPE(shooter, double breath dragon or so).
For example for 1st level let you have 100 points to customize your creature. And let there be rules how much the attack, defense damage, life costs from that points.
Let's put LIFE to cost each bar 5 points. Attack be 3, defense 3, Damage 6. If he's shooter life should cost 6 points but having ability to shoot. If he's dragon (i mean double breathing) Damage should cost 10 points.
So I want 1st level creature with 100 overall points. I'm using 8x5=40 life points for life 8. I want damage 5, 5x6 = 30 we have 30+24=70, left 30, I want attack 5 and defense 5, 5x3=15 + 5x3=15, 70+30=100. Here it is my new creature... and so... Maybe NWC have already some scheme like this - probably they have the game in some debug mode - and they are running as hell multiplayer AI's for months to see how they are balanced - somethin which not be allowed to anyone outside (or will be?).

Thanks for the replies.
Malkia, the point system you suggested is cool and would allow more flexibility for you to ¡§design¡¨ your own troop according to your strategies and taste.
My original intention for the freely downloadable units is mainly to allow more involvement of fans into the game. Fun is the most important reason. It would be really exciting seeing the creatures ¡§invented¡¨ or ¡§proposed¡¨ by you being adopted and really played by other players. On the other hand, NWC can make good use of the imagination/creativity of the vast population of homm fans.
Why not downloadable towns? Coz this would pose game balance problem and also much more inflexible to implement. A lot of game testing may be needed for those newly made towns. If those freely downloadable creatures made by fans are really interesting, NWC may consider to consolidate those and make them into a town in the expansion pack after proper game balance testing.

Creature Editor
At least a thread with fresh and constructive ideas!!
I think the most customization available in a game produces the larger game lifetime. How long will we have been playing HOMM3 (as an example) without a map editor and those great mapmakers producing expert-skill maps? Game Editors let the player join (in a special manner) the development team and translate his own imagination efforts into his favourite game.
So that's what I pray for... a CREATURE EDITOR.
Features like hit points, damage, specials, etc. are easy to implement (of course, within the game limits: you cannot create "new" specials so easily). The main difficulty in this editor is the graphical part, specially in HOMM4 where we're going to have 3D animations. Maybe you could grab an existing creature and change colors in some body parts...
As a general rule, everything you can customize and add stuff brings new life to the game

I would give a realy big kick when all the states will be reversed.
Like archangel for a level 1 creature and halebardiers for 7th.
Just for like one campaign!
Would be quite difficult to act sooooooooo differently...!

Ya, a map editor is definitely a plus for homm series. There are a lot of great maps made by the fans. As I can recall, the Price of Loyalty expansion has taken some marvellouse player made maps. NWC seems to be quite willing to take good maps from fans.
Nevertheless, when it comes to creatures, NWC seems to be quite conservative IMO. A good portion of the creatures in h3 come from h2 but just shuffled to different towns. Some of them come from the neutral creatures in h2 e.g. the elementals. Not many new creatures indeed. Now in h4, NWC even reduces number of creatures.
Some creatures really need to be retained coz they are interesting and well welcome by fans. But we need more creatures. If folks in NWC don¡¦t have enough creativity (though I don¡¦t think so ), let us fans do contribute to it. If they are feared about unfavorable reaction from fans. NWC can just use the idea of freely downloadable units to ¡§test¡¨ the reaction of fans before really incorporate those creatures into expansion packs.
Here is another wish, inspired by things in this community actually.
It seems ppl care about their avatars (at least some ppl care) here. Then how about you can use custom avatar when you customize your heroes in future homm installations. You may even use your own picture. Then when you are playing some RPG type maps, you can have more involvement and fun.

Well, I think if 3do gave HOMM fans the opportunities to make units, we would be seeing some high-quality work. Generally within a modifying community, those that make modifications that actually have a finished product others can see and use are usually of high-quality, perhaps even more likeable than the original. I had been whining for customization of Homm from the start, but most people didn't understand why I wanted to edit and create new units, and I don't think 3do was too happy about customization either (they were very upset at WOG, saying they had hacked the source code or something)

Game developpers should always make their product easily modable. They would be stupid if they didn't... if there weren't all these mods available for red alert 2, I wouldn't have played it that long.

Market Demands
I believe that today's market demands high standards such as these.
Thunderknight, excellent idea and I truly hope these sorts of ideas are implemented in the latest Heroes game.
Anything less, would be unworthy.
