"This symbol is all over the keep. But you say that it was there on the goblin's head and now it has vanished?" Richard asked for clarification. Isildur nodded. "Sounds like magic to me. Either someone in the group has motive to mess with you or as I have suspected for a long time..." Richard stopped before he continued revealing his thoughts.

Isildur: Richard i believe there is someone, guarding the Cauldron and its treasures... and i also think i know why i have been seeing this symbol everywhere...

Isildur shows his bow to Richard. Engraved in the middle, was the cauldrons mark.

Isildur:My father gave me this bow, i believe he use to raid the cauldron when i was younger. I think whoever is guarding it, wants back what belongs to him... thats why he is messing with my mind... Bah enough of this. let us continue before the others get suspicious.

Isildur and Richard were conversing off by the goblins, Hathar and Mvass whispering conspicuously nearby, and the others sitting around as they will.

Mark was getting impatient.

Still, he sat, and waited, carving into his staff with a knife. He would have to wait, and could... he could wait as long as they would be idle.

Hathar sighed, as he finished his speech and turned round to see what was happening around. Isildur and Richard were chatting with each other, appearing to be very enthusiastic, while Mark gazed at mvass and him, seemingly intensively pondering about something. Wishing not to distract him and attract his attention, he marched towards the stump behind him, thumping on the ground with his heavy boots.

The dwarf and his crow sat on the log and started gazing at Mark. Those troubling thoughts that something is not right with the magician followed him whereever he went. He was friendly to everyone, but he was very distrustful and often "checked" if his companion is actually a friend, not a foe.

' Mark, ' Hathar finally murmured. ' What is troubling you, mate? I know you, magicians, quite well, yet I cannot extract your minds and feelings from your mind. I know thee may think wrong o' me, but you can trust me perfectly well.  '

Dwarf sneezed, leaving a puddle of saliva on the grassy floor.

' There are ears and eyes all around and they are surrounding us... ' he continued. ' At these times, it is hard to trust anyone... Cauldron is nearing and with it, the danger lurking within... Of that I can be perfectly sure... '

Mark gritted his teeth, and set aside his staff.

"Sorry for my bluntness, Hathar, but do you not greive this waiting around?"

He looked off into the distance.

"I do trust you, I have no reason not to, you have not crossed me... but I feel that trust is a big issue in this group. Can't you feel it? This isn't one big group... we act like individuals who happen to be travelling together. Do you really think that we can make it through the Keep like this?"

Hathar looked straight into the eyes of the magician. His eyes were looking somewhere in the distance, as were his thoughts. The dwarf knowed not what to say. Yes, Mark was true. Trust is extremely important if they want to reach the Keep alive or to remain alike when they enter it.

" Waiting - annoying, yes, yet the goal is greater than every I set fer myself in my whole life. I do not find it grieving and I know not if it should be the way it is or not. "

Hathar sighed and bent his head down.

He looked behind himself and saw some other party members  chatting.

" Though, I dislike people answering questions with yet another question. I would certainly like to know more about you and what, other than you outlined before, troubles you greatly. By communicating, we can gain trust in each other. Yet... " Hathar raised his head. " There are folks within the group that I... seem not to trust, but I try to hide these feelings and always try to banish those thoughts from my mind. As you said, we should trust each other... " he finished with another sigh, taking his pipe out of his rune-belt.

=====

The sun shone briskly in the sky, high above the travellers as they finished packing their bags and tents. The atmosphere among the party members were as good as back then, in the tavern, prior to the journey, when they met each other for the first time, even though intensity was to be sensed spreading its entangling roots all over. The horses started to roar , as they sensed the continuation of their journey to the Keep was nearing.

The "nomadic" settlement had already been way behind the party, when the sun hid itself under the shadowy-grey darkness of nimbi. The raindrops clashed with the sandy road beneath the travellers' feet, raising a cloud of suffocating dust. The road was getting somehow slippery and the horses had to pauze pretty often, so as not to fall down and drop their riders. The elves and the dwarf (oh, and not to forget the wolf-dog of Annunhalion and the crow of Hathar), who preferred walking on their own feet, tried to keep up with the pace at which they moved, even though they preferred moving faster. They dreamily watched the obscure figures of the riders in the yellowy-brown rain.

Hathar lazily waltzed from one side of the road to the other, playing with his crow friend. Never did he find any other activity more enjoying than this. The mental bond between him and his "pet" augmented each day. Not only did he learn to understand what the crow is thinking about - yet some places of his mind were kept secret and the dwarf did not know how to breach them - or what should the crow think about. His axe was hanging loosely on his back while the rune-belt, which was long since used properly, started to tighten itself to the dwarf's waist and glow unnaturally.

A sudden crack echoed through the plains all around and all of a sudden, a massive lightning bolt struck a small tree nearby, as if it was destined to hit the travellers. Only a small pile of fiery ashes were left on the ground, in quite a big hole, supposedly created by the blast.

" Ahoy, mates! " Hathar shouted at his mates. The rain had yet not ceased, and the dusty fog rose even higher, dripping sand straight into the dwarven mouth, as he started his speech. " Keep is nearing, it seems! The nature, the land, even the weather here seems somehow unnatural -- supernatural, I'd say. "

He heard someone muttering in the front, yet he could not distinguish, which of the riders was doing that. Soon, a conversation between them was to be heard, but because of the rain, Hathar could not make anything of it. Yet, what he noticed was a strange instrument in Richard's right hand, somehow hidden from those who marched behind.

" I hate to disrupt the speech... " he repondered what to say to them, as he was eager to find out what they were talking about. " ... Maybe we could... discuss this, in private... Nah, too lame... " he spit on the road, shaking his head from the thought and heading straight for the leading party. " Can any of you tell me, what is happening and what more is there to know? Mark told me -- trust is a great issue in out party and we must trust each other. Thus, I dare to ask once again, what is happening? "

And before any of them could reply, he took something, that looked like a scrap of parchment, out of his pocket. " Here's a map of this forgotten, accursed land. The runemaster with whom I am keeping in touch drew this and gave me, and promised me to send another map as soon as we reach our destination. I thought it will help us in our journey. " he shrugged his shoulders and repeated his question.

Richard took the map from Hathar and handed it back to him.

"I know the way by heart, but thank you very much for the offer." Richard haulted his horse abruptly. The rest of the group was a bit surprised at his actions and followed his lead stopping as well. For a moment they didn't realize why the sudden stop, until they saw Richard staring at a figure a ways down the road approaching them. It appeared to be a massive heavily armored man suited up in heavy armor.

"Keep on guard, but do not ready your weapons."

The tall hulking figure noticed that the group stopped it's progress and one of them was looking in his direction. The morning sun lightened up the entire road and allowed very long vision radius. The figure stopped too, his hand reached for his sword scabard at his waist, the silence was broken with the clear sound of steel, the sword was now unsheathed it left its home and was now handeled with care in his powerfull arms. It was a magnificent two handed sword, for a second Richard got blinded when the sun reflected of it, he had to wipe a tear off.

After a moment of pause the figure raised the sword in the air and struck the ground. The sword was now stuck 5 inches in the moist ground, he released the sword lifted both of his hands in the air showing that they were both empty. After another pause he started moving slowly towards the group of travellers he pursued since they left their camp.

A little offended by Richard's actions, Hathar gave a him a severe look, but by the time he found out the true reasons why did he do that (" He seemed to be a nice fellow, all in all "), the dancing blades of his two-handed axe leapt straight into his hands. The scroll swiftly ran down into the sleeve of his cape, where it, according to the dwarf, should remain safe, whatever happens.

The chilly wind touched his face, leaving a dark-red mark on his cheek. " Blood! " he thought at first, but then he realized that it was just the bruises that he acquired during the fight against the goblins. Confusion and chaos conquered his mind and he leapt straight, leaving a dirty trail of sandy dust.

But suddenly, he halted and stopped in mid-way. A dim figure, consequently raising a cloud of dust and rainwater, was nearing.

" And who might that be? " he asked his crow-friend loudly, pulling pipe out of his pocket, as if he knew that the figure is not as dangerous as it looked from the beginning, yet firmly holding his weapon.

Mark dismounted his horse, and looked the man in the eyes. A brave move, causing some disruption with the rest of the group.

This man was enourmous, easily twice as wide as Mark and arms that could crush him in an instant, his bulk added to be great sheets of steel. But when Mark peered into his eyes, it was not this strong, solitary figure that was revealed, but a nervous man, anticipating something... acception.

Mark stepped forward.

"They say the eyes are a window to the soul." He said with a crooked smile, and extended his arms, to show them to be empty. "Perhaps that means I have none." Mark said, his blank grey eyes averted their gaze. This stranger didn't know that Mark's power came not from weapons, and harmlessness was a good disguise. Although Mark knew there was no real danger, Hathar had drawn his weapon ready in his ignorance. "I see that you mean no harm, and nor do I. Who are you, and why are you here?"

The stranger listened to the old little man, normaly he would have just pushed this weakling away to make a way to the strong men behind him the ones he did respect. But he remembered that battle yesterday the one he watched from behind the trees and was amazed at the powerfull magic abilities this little guy had unleashed.

"You are right little man, I mean no harm at all, and you don't really think that I can face all of you by myself and without my sword, now do you?" He turned his eyes to the other little figure in the group, Hathar.

"You can put that away Hathar, this is not the place nor the time to finish what had started long ago, I will not fight you unarmed and without a good reason." He noticed that he got the attention of all the members of the group so he adressed all of them.

"This woods are my home for the last 12 years and what I saw yesterday really made me wonder why am I stuck here, the way you all fought those nasty goblins and orcs reminded me of the true glory of battle, the clash of steel, things that are long forgoten to me." His gaze turned again to Hathar and a half smile appeared on his face.

"I am called Krull, I did not follow you for nothing, I've overheard that you are heading for Cauldrons keep, I must admit that I've never been there and after such a long time of relaxation my blood demands adventure! I am still skilled with the sword, I had practiced it every day to remain in good shape, so how about taking up another member now?"

"Practiced with what?" I stepped forth from the shadows regarding the man suspiciously. "For someone to have lived here for so long and missed the glory of battle, it's remarkable on how you were never attacked by any Orcs or Goblins. One would think you'd live daily ready for attack. And you also state that you watched us get attacked by those... riff raff. Shall I be the first to be thankful for YOUR help? Assistance would have obviously been appreciated... Mr. 'skilled swordsman' indeed!"

Turning I walked away from the three and resumed our heading towards the Keep.

"I have not stepped in to help you because it seemed to me you had the battle under controll the whole time, I've had my share of battles but it is a very rare sight to see a group of warriors fight as good as you did there." He had to raise his voice on the last words so that the man that started walking away would hear every word of the explanation.

"Normaly the orcs that do pass here are not offensive at all towards me, the opposite of that we had our share of drink till' you drop gatherings and some nice rumour sharing, you just have to find a common language with them. I do not know what has gone wrong with them, and why they attacked you but it's too late to find out." He looked in the eyes of all the men that remained in their places and still listened to him.

"Anyway those orcs are the nothing compared to what is waiting for you at Cauldrons keep if the stories and legends are true, you will need every sword you can get and mine is a really big one. I will not stay where I'm not wanted, this is the last time that I offer you my sword so what is your final decission?"

Hearing the new comer quite well, I couldn't help but scoff at his words. Speaking Orc didn't require much. Their vocabulary was limited and were mainly words that pertained to some violence. No matter what the case, if I'd have seen someone engaged in a battle, outnumbered, I'd have leant my aid. The way he spoke, as though he'd lived in the Keep for years, inspired me to suspicions. Perhaps a talk with Richard would be in need later on. Perhaps during a night watch if I am fortunate enough to be paired with him.

Mark said no more, and stood aside, as he could see that he hadn't earned any respect from this man Krull, and he would not intrude on their conversation to contribute his wisdom, as it was not wanted. Food only looks good to a hungry man, Mark thought, and instead focused on finding out more about this man... not from what he said, exactly, but how he said it.

He spoke so condescendingly to us, praise, indeed, on the surface, but it was praise as if coming from a superior... like a master complimenting his apprentice on work well done. Maybe this was deserved, maybe he was a veteran warrior, capable of great things, but that remained to be seen.

If not for anything but the protection of his armour, and the power of his sword, Mark would be glad to have him in the party, if not yet by his side as an equal.

Hopefully Krull could use his speechcraft to persuade this group to hasten to this damned Keep, which seemed to be retreating from the party every step they advanced.
But to persuade Krull of anything, Mark would have to earn his respect, by proving himself. A simple act of magic should be enough to baffle this tank...

But not yet. They must carry on.

Hathar took a deep breath and ventured forward. His pipe, which had already evaporated, was instantly put inside his pocket. The gigantic battleaxe he should have held with both hands weighed solely on his right hand, while his left hand was already under his armor-hiding vestment, reaching for the rune-belt.

" Things changed during the years... and I have changed... He is yet to find what secrets I shall hide from him... "

He spat on the sandy road, as if trying to throw out the thought that besieged his mind.

" Bonecrusher! " Hathar went forth and his eyes met eyes of Krull. Somehow, his face was as cold as a rock, yet some kind of tension was to be sensed between them. This name meant nothing to the others, but Krull and Hathar (not to mention the crow, which listened attentively) perfectly understood what it meant. " Or I should say... Never mind... " he discontinued as he saw that others knew nothing of it. " We shall yet discuss... these matters, as we progress... "

And at the same moment, he did what he thought he would never do - despite his hidden anger, he greeted him... like a friend, like a brother...

The journey to the Keep was much more toiling on the group than He could have hoped, and this new traveller that seemed steeped in his own arrogance would no doubt sweeten the pot further. Their progress had slowed to a crawl, each journeying with nary a word save for a few forced interactions between several of the party. The silence served as a testament that the stresses of the Keep were grasping the concentrations of all who were bound for its treacherous halls. Even Richard seemed distracted, daresay regretful as well, for bringing this group along on his most ambitious venture into the Guardian's lair to date. If they did not pull it together, Richard and his party would not remain unified long enough to reach the fortress as one. Divided they would fall prey to the Guardian's will without much of a fight.

Perhaps no action was necessary after all.

OOC:

TNT, have you lost interest in the thread so quickly...

and as I am about to mention the map once more (I WILL MENTION IT!), I can say in advance that it will not be updated yet... I will update it once we reach the keep

--------------------------------

For the time being, the distrust of the new member in Hathar's heart was significantly lessened, even though new thoughts were gathering over in his mind. Someone was keenly watching the party, but the one behind it was watching them from afar, as if toying with them in their journey. The dwarf would have sworn that he heard someone speaking... bah... That was the wind, most likely.

He seemed to enjoy the party's company even more, even though the atmosphere among them was intense. He knew they were well underway and the map seemed to have perfectly reflected where they were, as  though someone was travelling with them, constantly taking Hathar's map and updating it.

The journey has yet not drained Hathar's stamina, but Hathar felt more and more fatigued with time.

" Aargh... This journey... How will it end... How will the Keep react when we arrive..."

He fell silent, followed by a croak of his crow friend.

OOC - No TDL dude, I was just waiting for RSF to make a post but I guess all that time was just wasted.

Being accepted by the party members to join the journey for Cauldrons keep was only the first part of what Krull had in mind. He took his place moving in the front of the party besides Richard whom he considered the leader and the strongest member of them all that is physically.

He looked back at the others following behind, he could not keep himself from smiling looking at the small figure with the battle axe hanging on his back. Since Krull was born he was taught that size and strengh is the only things that matter in the tough real life but fighting next to Hathar in the past showed him otherwise. The small dwarf posessed more power than the huge enemies that he had slayed back then, some bigger 3 or 4 times than him.

He looked at the other small guy, he could not see any muscles at all plus this one was old aswell as weak. But feeling the wrath of magic on his skin in the past Krull learned to respect the mages even knowing their weakness. We will need this guy at top form when we reach the keep.

Turning back to Richard he asked
"You know the way better than all of us, so tell me cause I'm curious, how much longer 'till our destination?"
