I noticed one of the men catch sight of me as I leapt out of the thicket. Slashing my way to him I yelled over the ringing of blades and death cries of goblins.

"Saw one of them fleeing! I for one, don't want anything that sees us tonight to leave here alive to report back to who or what ever keeps attacking us! Duck!" I yelled at him.

He did so and a second later my scimitar had the head of the goblin that was previously running at him rolling on the ground. As the piles of dead goblins grew higher I noticed the elf and dwarf were busy with what looked to be a snare. With many goblins rushing their way I threw myself in between them to allow them more time to set their trap.

"Don't worry, I'll buy you the time you need! Even if it means my life!" I yelled at them before slashing my way into the goblin throng.

" Yargh... " the dwarf cursed with rage, throwing all of the goblins around a few metres back, allowing Ike to finish them. He dodged two more arrows and leapt to kill another goblin, which seemed to be the leader of the archers. " Ye won't get me like this, scum! " Hathar laughed and tore commander's shield into two pieces.

" Hathar... " someone's shout reached his ears.

He could hardly distinguish whether it was a friend or a foe. He had a cut in his ear and it was bleeding, which decreased his ability to hear. He leapt from the goblin circle, stomped on the grassy floor, knocking a few goblins on the ground and ran towards the voice.

It was Isildur, standing prepared for battle.

" I need you to help me with this! But first tell everyone to retreat! This way! " he whispered to the dwarf.

Hathar groaned in agreement, seemingly overtaken by curiosity. He ran towards his party members, slashing goblins on his way.

Mvass, Annunhalion, Richard - they were all easy to find. Yet, he was unable to find Mark, Ike - though he was slashing someone behind the tree - and Daniel. He ordered his companions to tell them when they see them and stormed towards Isildur.

" So what is the plan? " Hathar asked moderately, tearing a goblin's head from its owner right in front of Isildur.

"Fools..." Mark thought. The group had let it's guard down, and now they were surrounded by a throng of marauding goblins.

The first one they had found was now limp against the tree once more, this time in a pool of its own blood. It's head fell to the side.

Mark saw Hathar shouting out to Isildur, but couldn't catch what they were saying. A goblin leaped from a treetop nearby between the two, landing flat on two feet and two swords at the ready.

Mark reached his arm out, the one which was not carrying the blood spattered blade, and pointed at the goblin with one hand. A bolt of energy shot fourth from his palm, and blasted the goblin back into a tree, charring the tree trunk in the process. Isildur nodded in thanks, and swiped another goblin with his sword.

Suddenly Mark felt a great piecing pain, agony strike him in the back. He could not turn to see who had stabbed him, but blood had already stained the front of his shirt. He fell to his knees, weak. The goblin drew the sword out from his back, screaming.
"I killed it! Me! Killed the wizzard!"

Mark put his hand up to his chest, as if he were lifting an entire suit of armour, and touched his wound. The blood slowly disappeared, and the gash closed itself up, and the pain disappated. Mark swung his other arm around behind him, driving his dagger deep into the throat of the goblin.

Mark got one last look at his twisted face, as blood spewed out from the goblin's throat as he struggled for breath, before the spellweaver kicked him to the ground.

Mark knew that someone had sent these goblins, from the Keep... He could not mention how he felt this presence watching the group, but it would not be the first time.

"You think you can take me down with a mere goblin? I have heard of you, in myths and legends, but I knew them not only to be only as they seemed. I know you're watching me, but think; I'm coming for you. You stole my life, my magic away once, but it will not happen again." Mark thought.

He would have to speak to Richard, of what he knew of the protector of the Keep... because the recent days had made him realize that it was this figure that was the reason he took on this adventure. Perhaps it took Scath to wake him up, to realize what was calling him.

But for now, he would have to make sure the party made it to the Keep, soul intact.

Richard parried one attack to his left as he swiped downward and across his body with his right sword splitting the goblin in two pieces, from shoulder to kidney. Richard looked around him seeing people retreating from camp. He heard them call to follow. What the hell were they doing?

"What the hell are you doing?" Edwin yelled in fury. "Defend our camp!"

Looking back at the enemy, he saw a dozen goblins drop down from the trees and charge towards him. Richard glanced back once again and saw his party ignoring him. He didn't know if he could fight off a dozen goblins all on his own, but he knew there was no other option. These goblins would destroy everything they had. Richard had too many valuables that would make this journey end here tonight should they be destroyed.

"Cowards!" he yelled as he ran towards the oncoming goblins to meet them head on. Rings of steel and shrieks of pain filled the air. Richard's feet had never moved quicker as he ducked and dodged attack after attack before he was struck with a mace in the shoulder knocking him to the ground. Before he could get to his feet, two swords came swiping down. He rolled out of the way just in time to avoid the fatal blows. As he got to his feet he found himself surrounded.

I saw Richard run straight into the throng of goblins too. Slashing my way towards him I stopped his blade from deacpitating me. Going back to back, slaying goblins I yelled at him.

"The dwarf and elf have a plan. I'm tryin to buy em time! Perhaps we can get some answers from some of these fellows! Have ya got anything you need in those bags?" I yelled pointing to where some goblins where pillaging and dumping items on the ground.

Mark pulled two balls of fire into his hands, and cast them at a goblin to his right. As the flaming body fell to the ground he saw the other party members running off out of the clearing. Dan pointed ahead, and signalled for him to follow.

Mark saw what Isildur was doing, some variety of trap.

Mark turned back to the pack of goblins and shouted
"I must retreat, for I do not want these goblines to have my shiny posessions!" As expected, the goblins chased after him as he ran off after the group.

'Goblins.. such fools' Mark smiled.

" Hathar! " the dwarf shouted, slashing a goblin into two pieces as he followed Isildur, trying to lure all the goblins to follow after him. " Ye filthy goblin scum, you will never get away with this... "

The goblin massacre was seemingly never-ending... The goblins attacked and were killed... Yet, those attacks exhausted the dwarf and he surely needed some rest - after all, not using runes made him weary... They were unused, but they weighed on his belt.

" Isildur, all o' the goblins are following us... Tell me what to do next! " he finished, smiling at the ranger, as his plan was nearing completion.

The goblins played their role well as they charged in headlong against the party, for the heroes were slowing. The masses of corpses that already lined the twilit battlefield would soon be followed by many more, a genoicidal sacrifice that meant nothing to the Keep and its Guardian more than the riddance of such pests. Success was imminent, He believed, but failure was not defeat. After all, these were not his own creations, they were merely goblins from the north that had wandered into the Keep and fallen prey to its traps. There were so many that they had made it to the treasure room by sheer trial and error, but they did not get far beyond that.

To prevent the disappearance of all His baited bounty, the Guardian Himself went to deal with the invaders, and He soon had control of each of their weak and riven minds. The goblins would never be whole again, but they were never meant to. Not if they were to serve their master's purpose.

So now they swarmed the clearing, slowly wearing down the party as the camp fell prey to looting by those who had not yet met the end of a blade or an untimely blast of magic. The heroes, no doubt, kept their most valued of possessions on them at all times, but the loss of key provisions would definitely hold some impact, especially to Richard, whom the Guardian had singled out as the primary target. If the rogue that unified the party stopped wishing for unification, so then would the rest of the party and they would divide. Ike would make sure of that.

He watched his minions through the fog, saw the trap that had been set for them, and knew their time was at hand. It was simply their task to return with as much as they could carry and scatter the rest to the forest floor. Whatever happened, the party must not retain their goods.

The goblins began to flee into the trap.

Isildur ran over to the rope hanging by the tree.

Pull this as soon as i say!

Isildur and Hathar hold on tight to the rope, waiting for a majority of the goblins to reach the sweet spot.

Now Hathar!!!

Isildur screams, making sure the dwarf heard him. They both pull with all their might, lifting and trapping a large majority of the goblins in the net. Those boblins who managed to climb out found their faces rushing quikly to the ground.

Isildur began tying the rope to a sturdy looking tree, so that he and Hathar could get to work on killing whatever is left on the ground.

Richard heard Mark call out to the goblins.

"I must retreat, for I do not want these goblins to have my shiny posessions!" the spellweaver yelled. One of the goblins shouted out in orcish, which Richard could vaguely understand to be orders to head after the Mage. The same goblin yelled another strange command and then led the charge attack on Mark. A few goblins stayed behind filling their arms with as many pieces of equipment as he could find. One of them had what looked like a massive pocket watch attached to a long string.

"The Navidial," Richard gasped as he saw the goblin run off into the woods. A few goblins off to his side were going through his pack pulling out various items. Charging up he swung wildly catching the goblins by surprise. He decapitated three before they could look up to see what had happened. Before they could reach for their weapons, he had slain the rest.

"Ike, make sure no goblin leaves here with anything. Round up everything, I have to go after one of the goblins. It has something important."

"Leave it to me!" I yelled over the ringing of steel.

There was little more than a half dozen goblins fighting while less than that were trying to carry as many objects as they could and tried to run off towards the south. Quickly dismembering various attacking goblins, I flew towards where a quiver of arrows lay on the ground next to a dead goblin. Taking my bow off of my shoulder I whipped arrows up to and unleashed into the fleeing goblins as fast, if not faster, than most surface elves. When all was silent, save for the loud jabbering of goblins now trapt in a large net, I took the time to gather up the belongings that many of the goblins tried to run off with. As I slung the bags over my shoulder I smiled inwardly to myself, every arrow I had shot struck true to where the tiny goblin hearts would have been. Hoisting as much of the groups belongings as I could, I slowly traversed my way back to where the rest of the party were discussing what to do with the captives.

What is he doing?

The drow had stopped the Guardian's plan to divide the party and had helped recover much of the stolen bounty from the greedy little hands that had snatched it. The Guardian wasn't angry, for He had never known the troubles of an ally, but felt a kind of intrigue at this unexpected turn of events. Perhaps Ike had a plan of his own to divide the party, but the boundless arrogance that accompanied this path was hardly tolerable to the Guardian. The drow traveled light, and Ike carried all he owned on his body, so he couldn't have lost something of value to those creatures either. The only other alternative was treachery, a common bond amongst the drow folk. To unravel this mystery would be too costly, however, so the Guardian would simply have to bide His time. He would allow the enemy to reach His doorstep before making another move.

The Guardian realized that He could hardly go out amongst those He sought to destroy, not even in disguise. Mark, and perhaps the ranger Isildur as well, would sense the dark and terrible power that ages within the Cauldron's fumes had bestowed upon Him. And there was always His own power, the power of the Guardians to rend life useless for those who trespassed into the Keep. He had yet to use it, for there had been no need, but Richard would surely recognize that power as the aura of despair that hovered in the rarified halls of the Keep.

The party would continue the restless night and press on at dawn, a day closer to His domain. And now, the Guardian was not even sure He had a trump card in Ike. Despite all this, He was still not worried, for He knew that this seemingly invincible party would find their first defeats if they continued their course. It was only a matter of time.

"I suggest we burn all but one of them to death, and send the remaining one to the Keep as a warning to others. It might help if we put some spell on it so it would die just after reporting to its master, if it has one," Mvassilev suggested. "That seems... extreme," Hathar said, "And how will you make it go to the Keep?" "If it's in such an amount of pain, it'll welcome death in the Keep," Mvass said, "Now, there's a certain thing I'm worried about. I won't discuss it now, with all of you at once, but I can discuss it with you individually."

The Guardian watched the battered party heal and get what sleep they could, but no daylight could be wasted and they did indeed press on at dawn. He watched them exit the clearing and continue their course before dispersing the Cauldron's smoke. He would know when they arrived.

He looked down the hole for a moment at the bubbling brew below, wondering whether He would have to draw further upon its power at His own peril. Whatever it was that quietly simmered beneath the Keep was potent enough to empower Him with but residual fumes. Who knows what new powers would be reached if it were ingested? The cost would be great as well, however, for new insanities awaited the fool desperate enough to sample the concoction to accompany the great power, no doubt. He himself had barely held his drives in check at first, back when his task as Guardian of the Keep was beginning...

There is no time to a Guardian. They only know how to defend, to protect those sacred secrets the Ancients wished to keep before man, in his supreme might and greed, overtook the land and stripped it bare of relics from ages long past. The mysteries of the Keep must remain so, the Guardians are told, for it is imperative for the continued existence of all. Secrets so terrible, and so wonderful, would drive the world into chaos if they were unleashed upon an unsuspecting world. Man, in his supreme ignorance, cannot be trusted to keep these secrets himself, so we shall Keep it for him, or rather, from him.

Guardians have no name, nor are they distinguishable from one to the next. This is to ensure the timelessness of the watch upon the Keep. But why go to all that trouble to create the illusion of eternity when you deal with creatures that each last forever in their own right? Simple, even Guardians tire of inactivity. Whenever one Guardian disappears into the Nether, another emerges from the mysterious Cauldron of the Ancients that bubbles deep within the Keep, it's greatest guarded treasure and the very namesake of the fortress. It is possible that each Guardian is simply the same reborn, but there is no way to know for sure.

If this is true, then the Guardians exist in a repeating history of repeating lives. Perhaps this is the truth behind eternity.

The current Guardian, number 38 in a long line of parallel forevers, came to the Keep several hundred years ago, after the last Guardian grew weary of his position upon the defeat of His greatest rival in one of few instances where the Guardian itself was forced to step into action. Man was growing more wily by the day, but they were still no match for the Guardians. The Guardian of the present Keep would likely tire once Richard had vanished from the picture.

In the beginning, the Guardian found himself consumed by the impulse to drive all mankind away from the Keep, and He often stepped forth to challenge humanity for control of the forests into which a lone traveller had merely strayed. His mystery was lain bare, and humanity had made an enemy out of this mysterious "ghost in the night." The Guardian would soon realize his folly, however, and He has remained within the Keep since. The tales dwindled to legends, the legends to myths, and the Guardian had been all but washed away from the annals of history by the time Richard first set foot into the Keep.

The Keep still stood as a testament to great secrets, though, and invaders fell prey to its wiles quite frequently. No one knew of the Guardian now, though, so He was able to do as He pleased within His domain. This right He has exercised freely to this day.

They are no threat to Me, thought the Guardian as He remembered His grand lineage. No mortal could ever hope to challenge My might! His faith in the power of the Guardians renewed, the Guardian of the present returned to His throne.

There He would wait for the arrival of those foolish enough to challenge the Keep.

Mark looked at his eyes. There was something suspicious about the way he was talking. The subject was of concern, yes, but not to everyone. Mark suspected that he could not tell everyone because there was someone that he did not wish for them to hear it.
If this was so he would tell that person, or people, a different concern, a false one.

Perhaps it was just his way of speaking, but Mark wanted to find out.

"Mvass!" He called him into attention as he sat down next to the elemental. "Tell, what is this pressing matter that you... withheld from the crowd?"

Mark trusted Mvass at this stage, and hoped that his response was sincere.

Mvass disappeared from his side completely, but the air shone as if it were day. Mark pointed up into a black streak in the sky, a tear.

"There."Mark said. Back to the 1st plane. "I know that it was him who sent the beast to enslave me, and if he can command that much, he can do alot worse. We're going to need your powers, Mvass. All of ours."

Mark put his hand on Mvass' shoulder. It burst into flames, but the stead of a scream was a smile. Mark closed his hand into a fist, and the flame went out.

Mark stood up. "Stay alert, brother." And with that he left.

I felt the urge to protect it like I once had long ago... But I was free now...and nothing could protect the Keep's secrets from one who once protected them...
