Age of Wonders II

could the transition from HOMM to AOW II be fun and enjoyable?

Sure!

There would be several things you would miss:

1) hero development - it is actually fun but rather simple

2) beautiful towns - the buildings are represented with symbols only, and you cannot "enter" a town

3) more micromenagement - not too much, mind you, but there is gold and mana upkeep, creatures without heroes etc

4) no fixed damage - even your best units and heroes can miss and thus die in the end, forcing you to load autosave in the end

However, there would be more things you would love:

1) the great feeling of epic wars, because it's not just your main hero + two scouts - each and every unit counts

2) epic battles (especially sieges!), because several parties (not just two) can engage in combat

3) a great number of unique races and creatures (even greater with Shadow Magic expansion and 1.4 mod)

4) global spells... a lot of fun + look great

5) leveling up your heroes and units as well (they get new abilities when they earn silver and gold medals)

6) decent AI, especially at the highest level

7) play-by-email option

P.S. Why posting this in VW? There are several threads about AoW in Other Games... plus it was a good question!

another question. does the demo of AOW II accurately represent the game?

No idea, haven't played it...

Buy Shadow Magic, it's worth every cent.
