Ashan - a new beginning

Heroes 5 brings us to a new universe.. away from Erathia, the old story, and the heroes we used to love.
This is a new world you are all playing in, with new protagonists, and new destinies. But in order to understand the future we're fighting for, we should learn more about the past. So here it goes:

The Myth of Creation
Born from the Void, the Cosmic egg appears and hatches, freeing the twin Dragons of Order and Chaos.
ASHA, the Primordial Dragon of Order creates the world by giving it shape and purpose.
She then gives birth to the Elemental Dragons who are destined to guide and rule her creation.
The mortal races are created as “servants of the Dragon Gods”, and placed upon the earth. Each chooses its gift and its patron.
The radiant Angels choose ELRATH, the Dragon of Light.
The mysterious Faceless choose MALASSA, the Dragon of Shadow.
The quiet and meditative Elves choose SYLANNA, the Dragon of Earth.
The proud and sturdy Dwarves choose ARKATH, the Dragon of Fire.
The wise reptilian Nagas choose SHALASSA, the Dragon of Water.
The curious, restless Humans choose last and select SYLATH, the Dragon of Air.
Smouldering with jealousy, URGASH, the Primordial Dragon of Chaos creates the Demons in an attempt to surpass his sister's achievements.
Six Demon Overlords, twisted mirrors of the Elemental Dragons, will rule his unruly, vicious offsprings...

The dragons
In the new Might & Magic universe, Dragons are not mere “gigantic winged fire-breathing reptiles,” but they are Ashan’s primordial gods and the embodiment of magic.
The natives of Ashan are aware of the Dragons’ existence and hold them in respect, if not always in awe. Oaths are sworn on them, and their presence infiltrates everyday conversation.
An elite and secretive cast of “mystic warriors” known as the “Dragon Knights” have attuned themselves to the legendary beasts. They borrow their magic powers from the dragons’ own innate abilities (flying, fire-breathing, immunity to mundane weapons, etc.). They can ride dragons. Some say they can even shapechange into dragons !
These days, only the lesser dragons walk in Ashan. The Elder dragons wait in the Spirit Realm, accepting worship and awaiting the day they can return.

à Dragons are like the “Force” in Star Wars and the Dragon Knights are like the Jedi Knights.

The primordial dragons

ASHA, The Dragon of ORDER
She is the creator goddess, the mother of Time and Space, the triple-faced figure of birth, life and death.
She brought the world into existence, and then hatched the six Elemental dragons to rule over it.
She controls the fates of all mortal creatures – she spins forth their destiny at birth, measures it through their life, and cuts it at their death.
Asha is carefully neutral. She does not show favor to good men or evil men, dwarves, elves or orcs. All the universe is her creation.
However, she is diametrically opposed to the Chaos principle embodied by her insane twin brother and his demented children, the Demons.
Legend holds that after the Wars of Creation, Asha retired to a safe refuge within the moon, there to sleep, heal and dream.
Asha is not worshipped directly. She is above such things. But she is served by the Silent Sisters and the Blind Brothers, who throughout the world, help the women give birth, perform auguries and supervise funeral rites.
Note: The Necromancers (Necropolis faction) have chosen Asha as their patron-deity. However, their vision of her powers and attributes is twisted, a perversion of her death-dealing nature.

URGASH, The Dragon of CHAOS
The Dragon of Chaos is “raw untamed potential”, primordial chaos in its inexhaustible energy and infinite variety of forms.
He is ravenous and insatiable, the “snake that eats its own tail”.
He is the Father of wanton Destruction, of frantic Mutation, of rampant Madness.
He is also the father of the Demons.
He is long banished to slumber at Ashan’s core, but the Demons linger, and still strive to carry out his desires.

The elemental dragons

ELRATH, The Dragon of LIGHT
The golden Dragon of Light is worshipped as the Sun God and the patron of (legitimate) Authority, Truth, Honor and Justice.
His servants seek to illuminate dark places, conquer evil, and celebrate individual valor and heroism.
He used to be worshipped by his servants the Angels, but they were almost exterminated during the Demons’ First Coming. Now, Elrath is the patron deity of the Holy Griffin Empire (Haven faction).

ARKATH, The Dragon of FIRE
The bronze-red dragon Fire is rash, hasty, and ill-tempered. Selfish and hot-headed, ferocious in combat, he is ruled by his passions and impulses.
He is mostly worshipped by the thrillseekers, of those who see life as a constant struggle and burn it at both ends, but also of those who, like the blacksmiths, shed their sweat and blood as offering to the fire.
Arkath is the patron deity of the Dwarves.

SYLATH, The Dragon of AIR
The silvery-white dragon of Air is the keeper of secrets, for he sees all and hears all. However, he is frivolous (“flighty”) and impetuous.
He values quick thinking and spontaneity, but also useless complexity, which sometimes leaves him frustrated and condescending toward his older siblings, who just don’t “get it”.
He is mostly worshipped by travellers, bards, spies, but also mummers, courtiers, rakes and thieves, and even some wizards (for his extensive arcane knowledge but also his tendency to make even the simpler facts appear “hermetic”).
He is the patron deity of the Humans (the youngest race, as he is the youngest dragon) but has been supplanted by his elder brother Elrath, the Dragon of Light, in the Holy Griffin Empire.
Sylath is still very popular among the Northern Barbarian tribes and Eastern Free Cities however (not united enough to form a faction).

MALASSA, The Dragon of DARKNESS
The black Dragon of Darkness is the Faceless foe, the Slithering Shadow with a hundred faces and a thousand whispers.
Darkness is utterly unpredictable. Her “logic” defies mortal reason. She can save one day and kill the next, laugh and cry within a matter of seconds, be alternatively cruel and comforting, etc.
Darkness is a fickle and dangerous master.
Darkness may seem mad, but she knows. Yes, she knows, for shadow has always been here and there, watching you from close or afar, drinking your words and screams, and in her abyssal womb, lie all the forgotten memories and the buried secrets of the past.
Malassa is mostly worshipped by madmen and doomsayers, fearless spies and assassins.
She used to be the patron deity of the mysterious Faceless but they all disappeared centuries ago and now, she has made a sinister pact with the Dark Elves (Dungeon faction).

SYLANNA, The Dragon of EARTH
The green Dragon of Earth is the stolid, slow, even-tempered one among the Elemental Dragons. Earth acts only after long deliberation and study. Earth is very peaceful and cautious and often serves as a peacemaker among her siblings. She is Nature’s warden, being very fond of the plants, animals and living rocks that grow “on her back”, and the only way to wake her wrath is to destroy or defile her sacred groves and stone circles.
Sylanna is worshipped by druids, rangers, hunters, farmers and herders, but also by wood and stone carvers.
She is the patron-deity of the Elves (Sylvan faction).

SHALASSA, The Dragon of WATER
The blue Dragon of Water is humble, quiet and secretive. She is the serene mystic, wisest of the dragons, and her knowledge is only second to her sister Malassa, the Dragon of Shadow, for her watery realm is ripe with forgotten lore and treasure.
In all things, she values diplomacy, versatility and adaptability. Yet, if she decides to act, she is swift and indomitable. You cannot hope to win when you are fighting the waves…
Shalassa is worshipped by the sailors, fishermen and pirates, but also by the prophets, hermits and wisemen.
She is the patron-deity of the Nagas.

The Calendar
The current reckoning of years in Ashan is YSD – Year of the Seventh Dragon. All dates are reckoned from the day when the Seventh Dragon achieved enlightenment and underwent apotheosis. Before that, little is recorded, though it is certain, from the ruins of ancient civilizations that dot the landscape, that Ashan is thousands of years old.
At the time of the opening of Heroes of Might and Magic V, it is 969 YSD.

The Mythic Age

The Myth of Creation : the Void, the Cosmic egg, the birth of the twin Dragons of Order and Chaos.
The Dragon of Order creates the world and gives birth to the Elemental Dragons.
The “Elder” mortal races are created as servants of the Elemental Dragons.
The Dragon of Chaos creates the Demons.
The Mythic Age ends with an all-out war between the Primordial Twins, fought on all levels of reality.
The Dragon of Chaos is vanquished but not destroyed. He is jailed in the planet's fiery core, and his monstrous offsprings are cast out of the material world.
The Dragon of Order, severely weakened by the conflict, buries herself within the moon to rest and heal.

The Ancient Age

Elder Wars – The Angels launch a crusade on the Faceless. The destruction is terrible, and the elder races suffer tremendously. Early civilizations and kingdoms are destroyed.

The Primordial Dragons become myths and are slowly forgotten. Only the Elemental Dragons are worshipped.

The Demons benefit from the general confusion to establish a foothold in the world. Lurking in uninhabited places, they slowly gather their strength.

The Modern Age – Years of the Seventh Dragon

0 YSD: The Revelation of the Seventh Dragon
Sar-Elam the first wizard reaches the conscience of the Dragon of Order who teaches him on the nature of matter and spirit and shows him the higher path of power. Enlightened by his new understanding, Sar-Elam becomes the Seventh Dragon.
3 YSD: Birth of the Falcon Empire
Falcon the Great unifies the human kingdoms (founding the empire that will one day become the Haven faction). The Seventh Dragon prophesies that the Falcon line shall endure as long as the world does.
28-40 YSD: Wars of Fire
First great demon incursion.
Most of the Angels perish during these wars. The survivors take refuge in the Falcon Empire, which is increasingly turned away from the Dragon of Air and toward the Dragon of Light.
The Seventh Dragon sacrifices himself to end the Wars and repel the demon incursion. Sar-Elam and his disciples seal the demons away to prevent their return.
48 YSD: the Falcon Empire becomes the “Holy” Falcon Empire
– Founding of the Free Cities of the East
Emperor Brian Falcon gives absolute power to the Church of the Dragon of Light. The Human kingdom is renamed “Holy Falcon Empire”. Dissent grows among many citizens who resent being forced to abandon the Dragon of Air. Many will leave the Empire’s territory to found the Free Cities of the East.
50-260 YSD: The Years of Healing
Reconstruction from the Wars of Fire and relatively harmonious relations between the races.
62 YSD: The Schism of the Seven
– Founding of the Dragon knights, the Blind Brothers, and the Seven Cities
Schism between the disciples of Sar-Elam, who can’t agree on the best way to follow the road laid down by the Seventh Dragon and, hopefully someday surpass him. Sar-Antor founds the Blind Brothers, a congregation of healers, seers and embalmers dedicated to the worship of Asha. Sar-Badon founds the Dragon Knights, a martial order disciplined in both body and mind.
The other disciples, led by Sar-Shazzar, the most gifted of them all, lead an exodus of wizards and like-minded humans to found the Seven Cities (the first kingdom of Magic) in the southern deserts.
67 YSD: The Prophecy of the Demon Messiah
Sar-Shazzar gives the Prophecy of the Demon Messiah, which predicts, among other things, that a half-demon hero will someday shatter the Demon Prison and unleash bloody chaos on the world.
74 YSD: Mysterious death of Sar-Shazzar
Sar-Shazzar dies in his sleep. When attendants attempt to move his body to the Necropolis for preparation and burial, it crumbles to ashes.
104 YSD: The Dragon knights become a secret order
On his deathbed, Sar-Badon commands the Dragon knights to build the Hidden Houses, and to retreat to them when they are complete. These strongholds are scattered across the world, dedicated to preserving the teachings of the Seventh Dragon, watching against any Demon activity, and training new Dragon Knights to fill their ranks.
No longer are the Dragon Knights to be prominent or visible in the world. Through the centuries, they will leave their fortresses only rarely, and only in times of extreme danger.
330 YSD: 1st Eclipse - War of the Blood Moon
– Creation of the Orcs
A total lunar eclipse provokes a massive rupture of the Demon Prison. The Demon Lords force their way out and raven across Elven lands. Human and Dwarven armies are rallied to meet them, but, caught by surprise, they are rapidly overwhelmed.
Called upon for assistance, the wizards of the Seven Cities send their forces into battle. They experiment with demon blood, which they inoculate into human slaves and criminals. The monstrous Orcs are created as a result.
Bolstered by the Orc shock troops, the Alliance defeats the Demons. The Demon Lords are cast down, and the surviving demons banished back to their hellish prison. The Dragon Knights emerge from hiding to repair the prison as best they can, then vanish once again.
In the wake of this second demon war, Orcs are re-settled in the Falcon Empire as well as the Seven Cities. They are not granted their freedom, but instead serve as indentured troops.
461 YSD: Discovery of Necromancy
Belketh, a disciple of Sar-Shazzar, discovers the path of Necromancy. Necromantic experimentations begin in the Seven Cities.
467-504 YSD: The Orc Crusades
Orcish rebellion in the Seven Cities, which spreads to Haven.
Rejecting their masters and the Dragon Gods, the Orcs declare themselves free.
In the Falcon Empire, Crusades are declared against the Orcs – attempts to subjugate them and convert them back to dragon worship. The fighting is brutal, and the Orcs are relentlessly driven back. Eventually, the unrepentant survivors flee wherever they can, including the deserts of the south, the steppes of the north-east and the Barrier Islands of the east,
A great storm sinks the Haven fleet that was prepared to follow the Orcs to their island refuge. The Falcon Emperor declares this a sign from the Dragons, and formally ends the Orcish Crusades.
512 YSD: Creation of the Beast-men
Beast-men (minotaurs, centaurs, harpies…) are created as servants, playthings, and guards in the Seven Cities. Their stated purpose is to replace the Orcs.
528 YSD: Tuidhana’s secession
Tuidhana, legendary founder of the Dark Elves, declares independence from the Elven Kingdom.
540 YSD: War of the Bitter Ashes – birth of the Dark Elves
War between the Elves of Irollan and the Human Knights of the Holy Falcon Empire, with Tuidhana's kingdom as their main battlefield. Her territory under attack from both sides, Tuidhana makes a pact with the Faceless for the power to protect her people. Those who follow her are changed by the blessing of Malassa, Dragon of Darkness. From this day on, they will be known as the Dark Elves. With the support of their new allies, they will expel both the Elves and the Humans from their land.
548 YSD: The Peace of New Spring
The Holy Falcon Empire forfeits any claim to elven lands and makes extensive reparations. The Dark Elf kingdom's independence is recognized - at swordpoint - by Elves and Humans, but intermittent hostilities persist across the borders.
564 YSD: 2nd Eclipse - Rise of the Demon Sovereign
Total lunar eclipse. This time the Blind Brothers had predicted it, and the Alliance, helped by the Dragon Knights, is quick to react. Only a small band of demons manage to escape into the world. The names of the Demon Lords, Urgash’s first children, are heard no more. Instead, the name of Mal-Beleth, new and only Demon Sovereign, appears.
566 YSD: Day of the Tears of Fire – death of Tuidhana
A massive fire burns down the Elven capital. The High King dies in the flames with most of his court. Brythigga, the Mother of Trees, sacred to the Elves, is also consumed by the fire. The loss is devastating.
The Dark Elves are blamed and given an offer of exile or death. Most chose exile; the rest are hunted down and destroyed without mercy. Tuidhana remains with her lands and is killed.
585 YSD: Discovery of Demon implication in the Day of the Tears of Fire
Dragon Knights bring evidence to the Elves that Brythigga’s criminal fire was set by a Demon spy.
Emissaries are sent from the forest to the wandering Dark Elves, offering amnesty and inviting them to return home. The offer is refused.
586 YSD: Establishment of the Second Dark Elf kingdom on the borders of Dwarf territory
Relations between the two kingdoms are strained at best.
610-660 YSD: Rise of the Necromancers
The Necromancer presence grows until they are a powerful political force in the Seven Cities
684-702 YSD: War Under the Mountains
The Dwarves enter into open conflict with the Dark Elves. As the war turns against the Dark Elves, exiled Demonists from the Seven Cities make contact with Tuidhana's sons, who now rule in her place. They offer assistance in exchange for worship.
717 YSD: 3rd Eclipse – Dragon Hunt
During a brief lunar eclipse, a band of Demons escapes into the world. They seek out the hidden strongholds of the Dragon Knights and begin a bloody secret war. The Dragon Knights are eventually victorious.
751-770 YSD: Purge of the Necromancers - Civil war in the Seven Cities
Jealous of the power acquired by the Necromancers, the Wizards of the Seven Cities initiate a large-scale persecution, ranging from the seizing of their properties, to banishment, to the spectacle of public executions.
A long and gruesome civil war ensues. The ancient cities are destroyed and much of the land is rendered uninhabitable.
771 YSD: Foundation of the Silver League
Survivors of the Seven Cities establish the Silver League (the second kingdom of Magic) in the lands to the south. Necromancers flee east to the haunted valley of Heresh.
813-822 YSD: War of the Broken Staff
The Necromancers attempt to crush the newborn Silver League but the Wizards gain the upper hand and invade Heresh. The Necromancers are utterly defeated and their kingdom shattered.
843 YSD: 4th Eclipse - Falcon’s Last Flight
Total eclipse. This time, the Demons storm the capital of the Falcon Empire and massacre the royal house. As soon as the Demons are repelled, fighting breaks out as the various noble houses attempt to claim the throne. Duke Ivan of Griffin conquers the bloody crown. The Empire is renamed “Holy Griffin Empire”.
951 YSD: 5th Eclipse - War of the Gray Alliance
Total lunar eclipse. Demon armies are confronted by a combined force of Haven Knights, Wizards, and Elves. Emperor Andrei Griffin pursues the Demons into the very underworld, and is killed. His soul is rescued by the Dragon Knight Tieru, and bound up in the artifact called the Heart of the Griffin. Andrei’s son Nicolai, aged 6, ascends the Imperial throne.
969 YSD: 6th Eclipse - Queen Isabel's War
An eclipse not forecast on any calendar grips the Blind Brothers in a panic. The Demons emerge in force and march towards Haven’s capital.
This war will be known as Queen Isabel's War and is the topic of Heroes V’s campaign.

I read that they are dragonless because they felt betrayed by the gods and no dragon did create them but they were just an experiment...
You've seen their logo ...

And thanks a lot Mantra official site's so lame... But I wanted to ask you where did you find all this... Have you made smth up?

Who are those Silent Sisters?
And the info about Dragon Knights I see for the first time...

While we're at it ... can anybody tell me the ending of that scenario when Veyer tries to summon new sovereign and needs to capture 3 town and get sacred artefacts to accomplish the ritual...I can't remember the name...

That is a very good question. The MYC - which may and may not be of stricly official origin, and which they might have deviated from since this post's origin - indicates that these Barbarian tribes would be Human tribes, as the Humans originally worshipped Sylath. It would have made sense to have some sort of alliance between this barbaric Humans and the Orcs - that was where my 5 cents were placed, but that seems not to be the case from the information we have seen on the Horde / Stronghold so far. The "northern barbarians" might therefore have been discarded since the original planning phase - there has been indications that Nival did not originally intent to include Orcs in the game - or they might simply live somewhere else.

conclusion - I don't know about Karthal, the more I think of it, the more I realise I can't say

Well it's actually not Greek/Roman style...Looks more like Turkish ... And there is some water around it and it is placed close to water... Nagas are not mentioned as creations of the mages but as the worshippers of water dragon... but named water snakes, right?
And it would be stupid if they live on far east if Nival already squeezed all other races on one continent...

As far as I know - and I think I'm pretty updated on that part - there is no information on what Nival intended with Karthal, so all we can do is guess. The style does indeed look Turkish, and the town is surrounded by pools of water, which I'm positive is a very important clue. Naga's would be a solid clue from the Myth Of Creation, but from the HoF concept artwork we see that the "Naga Temple" - whatever that is - is Japanese in style. However, one should keep in mind that Nival have changed style multiple times since the map was made - notice, for instance, that the Necromancer town looks very similar to the Heroes 3 Fortress when you look at the map, whereas the final town looks anything but that!

Another interesting guess would be Elemental / Conflux. Someone commented he thought Karthal looked like the old H3 Conflux, myself I don't see that resemblence at all, the H3 Conflux is obviously reborn in the new H5 Academy. The Watery pools might have a connection to Water elementals, but had that been the intention of the developers, I feel confident they would have made representations of all four elemental terraines around the city (like the H3 SOD special battlegrounds).

My personal guess is that Nival orignally intended to introduce Nagas as the second expantion race, and place them in Karthal. Orcs might have been introduced as neutrals - thus the tents in Ranaar and west of Silver Cities - but I think Nival originally intended to hold back Orcs for H6, thus the formulation that they are not yet gathered to form a faction, though this is sufficiently vague to be compatible with the current history also. The mention of the Dwarves and Nagas alike in the MOC is what gives me this thought. Another interesting clue is that if you read between the lines of the recent TOE Interview, it might seem that the Orcs were introduced due to strong demands from the fans (too lazy to link right now). That is my theory - and that also means that with the current evolution, I think Karthal will never make it to the game.

you mean never make it in hommV, because I'm pretty sure we will find out in hommVI what faction lives in Karthal.

also there was a second map, after a cataclysm or something, and there in the Jade Ocean(southeast) there is an island called Hashima - maybe that's where the naga live. ON the normal Ashan map there is an Archipelago in the Jade Ocean which corresponds to where Hashima and the other islands are on the other map
