*****HOW TO RESIZE PHOTOS. READ THIS!!!*****

It is the polite thing to do to resize your large pictures so that they do not take up download time, processing time, and hard-drive space.  Here’s how you do it:

Section 1.  Places on the internet where you can download programs to resize and edit pictures

Section 2.  How to resize pictures with programs that might already be on your computer.

Microsoft Photodraw
Microsoft Photo Editor (this is the editor that comes with MS office 97)
Microsoft Picture Manager (this is the editor that comes with MS office 2003)
Microsoft Paint
Paint Shop Pro
Corel Photoshop Elements
GIMP for Windows

Addendum:

Section 3.  How to put your pictures on Photobucket or Flickr so that others will be able to see them when you put them in your posts.

Section 4.  How to put your pictures in posts.

Section 1: Places on the internet where you can download programs to resize and edit pictures

If you go here you will find the top 8 free photo editors for Windows.

Here are three in case you are confused:

Ultimate Paint

VCW VicMans Photo Editor

GIMP for Windows

BTW I would appreciate any and all feedback concerning this shareware photoeditors and also if someone could create a “resizing guide” for these similar to the ones I’ve listed down below I would appreciate it very much.

Section 2:  How to resize pictures with programs that might already be on your computer.

Microsoft Photodraw
Microsoft Photo Editor (this is the editor that comes with MS office 97)
Microsoft Picture Manager (this is the editor that comes with MS office 2003)
Microsoft Paint
Paint Shop Pro
Corel Photoshop Elements
GIMP for Windows(scan down to Lith-Maethor's post for instructions for GIMP)

Microsoft PhotoDraw

1.Enter the program (PhotoDraw)

2.Open a new document by following the options provided, or simply clicking on the ‘new document’ icon – you know, the white page with the turned edge. It is in the top left hand corner.

3.Click INSERT> FROM FILE> {Find the pic on your computer}>OPEN

4.Your picture should now be in front of you.

5.To RESIZE it: Right Click on the picture, then RESIZE. Adjust the height or width as you wish. You don’t need to do both, just one, and then click again on the picture and it will resize it.
Or you can just use the arrows on the height and width selectors.

6.Important: Once you have altered the picture it will default to a Photodraw file. You need to change this back to a jpeg or GIF when you save it.

7.SAVE: Right Click on image and select ‘save selection’ or go to File>Save As. At the bottom of the ‘save’ window there is a panel “save as type”. Click on this and select the jpeg.

8.You are done

Microsoft Photo Editor(this is the photo editor that comes with Windows 97 office)

1.  Control O Opens the file you need

2.  Check to make sure you can see the Toolbar (open the View menu and make sure it is checked)

3.  Click the tool with the rectangle on it.  This enables you to set rectangular outlines on the photo.  You can adjust the rectangle by dragging the handles.

4.  Go to the Image Menu, and then "Crop".  Press OK.

5.  Go to the Image Menu, and then "Resize".  Enter the percentage you want to shrink it to.

6.  Look at the little window off to the right and make sure you are looking at the picture at 100%.

7.  Control Z will undo the shrink if you need to do it again.

8.  Save as a .jpg (preferably).  Set the compression high, about 70 will do it.

Microsoft Picture Manager(the standard picture editor that comes with Office 2003)

This program is the one of the biggest pieces of crap I’ve ever seen, even by Microsoft standards

1.  Go the the File menu, then “Locate Pictures”.  Wait five minutes while this piece of crap scans your entire hard drive.

2.  Go to the View Menu, then “Shortcuts”.  Check it off so that you a panel opens up on your left so that you can see all the different places that your pictures are.

3.  Right click on the menu bar and when the little pop up comes up make sure that the Standard, Formatting, Picture shortcuts, and Task Pane are all checked off.

4.  When you click on an area over on the left (the window shortcuts) you will be able to see all the pictures within that folder.  Click on the picture you want to edit and it will become bigger and you can now work on it.

5.  Press the “Edit pictures” button near the top and in the middle.

6.  When you look over on the right you will be able to see both the “crop” and the “resize” options.

7.  When you crop it will give you several handles you can drag.  After you position the handles you can press the OK button over on the right.

8.  Hit that little green arrow to return to the main “options” menu (the one with resize, crop, color, etc….)

9.  To resize you have several options how you want to do it. (percentage is the best maybe)  Press the OK button after you are done.

10.  Make sure you are looking at the picture at 100%.  You can find that little indicator up near the top near the middle.

11.  Go to the File Menu and “Save as” to save the newly edited picture.

12.  Ironically you can’t turn any type of file into any other type of file with this. Bitmaps will stay bitmaps, jpgs will stay jpgs etc…  You also can’t change the compression factor.  Thankyou Microsoft.  Thankyou for letting me down the fifteen thousandth time in my lifetime.  Thankyou for wasting hard drive space and my personal time.  Thankyou…just for being you.

Microsoft Paint

If Microsoft Picture Manager is a piece of crap then Microsoft Paint is the fungus that grows on the piece of crap.  You can’t do anything with this.  Don’t even try.

No wait, I was wrong.  You can actually turn a bitmap into a .jpg or .gif. with this, unlike Picture Manager.   That’s about all this is good for though.

[EDIT]:

Iris:

Actually, I resize all my photos with MS Paint.  Because I don't have anything else.

Go to the "Image" tab and select "Stretch/Skew." Now enter some number less than 100 for the Horizontal and Vertical Strech (make sure you use the same number for both of those) and then save your image as a jpg. Simple.

Celfious:
Quote:

You can crop. You can do a mouse box over any part of the image you want, "copy" then paste it in the same project or a new one.
You can open more than one paint project at the same time. Each project is a different picture.
To enlarge or shrink, use "stretch/skew"
You can turn it into black and white also. Go to "image then attributes"

all this just goes to show you boys and girls that there is no excuse whatsoever for not resizing your photos.

-thankyou

Paint Shop Pro

5.  Use the Control O button to open up the picture.

6.   Make sure that you can see the "Tool Palette".  All you have to do is go to the View menu and make sure it is checked.

7.  Click on the third icon from the left on the tool palette.  It looks like a rectangle made with dashed lines.  This is the selection tool.  Click and drag and you will be able to create a rectangle on the picture.

Press Shift-R and it will crop the picture.

8.  If you want to zoom in or zoom out you can use the magnifying lens tool.  Left click zooms in, right click zooms out.

9.  After you cropped the picture the next step is to resample it (this is the same thing as making it smaller). Almost always the picture you get from the camera will be much bigger than the picture you actually want to post.

Press Shift-S.

You can now see an option to do a "custom size".  First thing you do is check the little "keep aspect ratio" so that the picture won't accidentally get squashed.

You have two boxes where you can put in numbers.  The box on the left is horizontal and the box on the right is vertical.  Since you already checked the "keep aspect ration" all you have to do is enter a number on the left.

Pixels:
approximately 80 pixels equals 1 inch onscreen.  approximately 65 pixels equals 2 centimeters.

enter the horizontal number you want the final picture to look like and hit the "ok" button.

10.  press Control Alt N.  This makes the view 100% so you can see what the picture will actually look like when you post it.

11.  If you made the picture too small or too big, press Control Z (undo).
Go back to step 9 until you have the picture the size that you want it.

Here's a list of shortcuts:

Shift-R         Crop
Shift-S          Resample
Control-Alt-N    View at 100%
Control-Z   Undo

Corel Photoshop Elements

1. Press Control-O to open the picture you want

2.  Up near the top left you will be able to see a “plus” magnifying lens and a “minus” magnifying lens.  Click one of these and then when you click on your picture you will be able to zoom in or out.

3.  On your tool bar you will see a tool that looks like a square with two “V”’s  flying from opposite corners.  This is the crop tool.  Click it.  Then click and drag a rectangle on the picture.  It will now show handles that you can use to select where you will crop the picture.  Once you have the picture nice and tidy you can click on the crop tool over on the tool menu again (just like you did 15 seconds ago) and it will be cropped.

4.  Click the Image Menu, and then “Resize” then “Image Size”.  You now have several options about how you can resize it.  Make sure “Constrain Proportions” is checked off, 150 dots per inch is a good standard, and then all you have to do is adjust width and the height will also automatically adjust.

5.  Control-Alt-O will let you know what it looks like real size (100%)
Control-Z will allow you to undo it in case you made it too big or too small

6.  Save As by pressing Shift-Control-S.  If you save it as a .jpg the program will ask you what compression factor you want.  10 is good.

Section 3:  Photobucket and Flickr

If you go to Photobucket  you can upload your pictures onto their server for free.  Then you can make links to those pictures so that they show up in your posts.

Flickr is another option.

Section 4:  How to put your pictures in posts.

When you are typing your post you just add this:

{img}put the complete web address of your picture here{/img}

also

{url= put the complete web address of your picture here}put the text you want the reader to see here{/url}

for the second option the reader will see this phrase:“put the text you want the reader to see here”.  When they click on that phrase they will see the picture that you are linking to.

Note: for both of these options you have to replace the girly brackets {} with the manly brackets [].

How to resize: GIMP version

this is how you do things with GIMP (using the Linux version here, but all are the same, so no problem)

Step 1: Opening the file
you either click on the file itself, selecting GIMP as your editor of choice (something that is based on the file manager you use, Explorer for Win users) or you open the GIMP, then use Crtl + O to open the file (or use the menu... File -> Open)

Step 2: Resizing
things here are easier, you either use the menu on top of the image window, or the one that appears if you right click on the image itself, in any case, it is Image -> Scale Image

this brings you to the dialog itself... things are pretty self explanatory here, you enter the values for Width or Height, select Interpolation if needed (the options are self explanatory as well) ...you hit Scale and that's it ...you have a nice resized image

Step 3: Saving
standard procedure here ...you either use Ctrl + S, or the menu File -> Save ...et voila, you are done

EDIT: the fact the original pics were too big for comfort was intentional to show you the horror of large images and was not in any way accidental and because my standard resolution is 1600x1200 ...you believe me, right?

yeah but you can't crop with MS Paint. and you also can't open more than one picture at a time. Enlarging the canvas is another chore that I'm not even sure is completely possible. Also if I remember correctly you can't change it to black and white, or change the jpg compression ratio  etc... I think that's where my "fungus on piece of crap" comment came from.

Edit:  HOWEVER

Since you've been using MS paint Iris,
it clearly shows that there is no excuse whatsoever for not resizing your pictures

either way...

there is no excuse for someone not to resize an image...

whether in Linux, MacOS, Windows or any other OS, there is always an image editor able to resize ...and since webhosting is hardly an issue, those that do not resize their images should be flogged to death... ahem, I mean, should resize anyway

With all due respect everything you listed is giant pain in the ***.(especially when you are trying to do some precise cropping)  Compared to other photoeditors it's like you're living in the stone age.

Anyway, I added both you and Iris to the original post, check it out...
