Legendmaker....u would make a good writer for a newspaper of the yellow press. Taking a small part out of a whole issue and make a sensational newsflash.
What u do here is just not fair towards Conan. Get knowledge about the whole issue, and then post again please!
Wow ! You credit me intentions I sincerely don't have, Angel. Like I said, it's just what I could gather. I didn't mean to be unfair to Conan at all. I said he HAD to give the penalty. And what truly matters for me in this debate isn't at all this particular past incident. I only pointed it as an example. I discussed this with Pan awhile ago, and she told me all about the "mod's hat" thingie etc. My point isn't at all to judge this event.

My point is, following this, it was made clear that the automatic censorship feature doesn't serve any purpose at all as things are. Which is my concern here. Now if I'm wrong and/or misinformed, I'm all ears, dude ! I think you KNOW I'm nothing like the yellow press.

But the way u described it could bring up the imagination of "A mod is lurking around all the time and quoting all posts containing "***" to see if it was censored by the poster and if not, apply good old penalties...."

Russ was warned by IM from Conan just short time before, coz he didnīt censor some swear words in a post in The Other Side forum. Conan explained him how to act with that issue and all was good.....he thought....

So this penalty didnīt came out of a sudden. He even wanted to edit Russī post first, but couldnīt coz it was in the library, which he didnīt moderate.
All fair and square in my eyes....

Maybe so. Sorry then. Then again, the way you described my post could bring up the imagination of "A really unfair member willing to make mods look like evil power abusers makes up a story of his own to serve his filthy masterplan". Always be careful with assumptions and/or misinterpretations. I reckon we both agree on that.

Ok. Sounds like wise and moderate use (not abuse) of mod's powers to serve his mod's duties, then. If it happened like that, Conan only did his job. And he tried the diplomatic way before using extreme measures. Fair and square indeed.

But this doesn't solve the question of automatic censorship's uselessness, imho. This feature should either FULLY transform swear words into **** (so that even if u quote the post, it still appears as " **** ") or be removed completely. As it is, it does strictly nothing but mislead everyone. If you remove it, even the most reluctant members WILL most likely get used to TYPE " **** " systematically. And this is how I parallel it to your past suggestion to remove the "Delete" button.

Any thought on this ?

I do have to agree with Angelo & dont take it like I am against you legend.

I saw it too.
Russ & I go back before the HC & I know how he is.
He dont take threats serious.
People who get warnings need to be penalized to make them get a HC check (reality check)

Sometimes what you read is not always the full story.

Reread what I said before Legend & I did answer your Q as well.
Mods shouldnt waste thier time using Automated censorship.
We should be responsible enough to keep swearing to a minimum as possible.

@ William
Donīt make this your personal "i hate you all" thread. We discuss your suggestion about censorship here. If u need to express your feelings about that penalty u recieved yesterday, open a new thread if u like, but the discussion here with Acu wonīt help ya.

@ Legend
You are pretty right here. I donīt know if this is possible though (automatic censorship in quoted posts), we have to wait what Val has to say about that.

I would combine that censorship rule with the 20/24 posts rule
Every post where an automatic cencorship got in action counts as 10 posts. So half your limit is already done then..

LMAO ! Might as well remove it completely, then.

Absolutely. And this is clearly the way at least I understand the CoC's spirit. Hence the inefficience of the current automatic censorship feature. If you want ppl to take responsibility for what they say, don't hide it. Specially not if it's only half-hidden.

And now, after this Legendary (and Legendarily tense) debate, I'll go get some Legendary sleep. Hopefully this Legendary happy ending will inspire me some sweet dreams...

Yes my idea should be implemeneted into the HC system, it would lower swearing, and thus people wont get as much penalties

I am so sick of people who can't take responsibility for their own actions.  It is not hard to leave Y'n Nose's out of your posts for goshness's sake {I get a warning first right...? editstars changed to letters }

I Want TO SLEEP ! ! !

Quote:
Oh I seriously cant help saying sorry, I say it all time because I truly am, and if Valeriy quotes this then I may get angry
That's your problem, mate. It's always the same process from A to Z and I'm really tired of it.

It's only between you and me, but maybe a public debate could force you to face reality about your own behaviour. Look at our HCMs exchange for the past 30 mins or so : one minute you're pure anger and blame me, the next minute you're apologizing already. I said it before, man (see ? I didn't use the "k" word hehe). Saying "sorry" doesn't change a thing. Specially NOT when you do the same annoying thing over and over again. Doesn't matter if u apologize each and every time. And apology is NOT an absolution !

Now I sleep. I'll reply tomorrow if the debate keeps going on.

This thread has gone offtopic completely. I'm btw two decissions... closing or cleaning... what should I choose.

The main reason is that will that censorship will change anything? You know that many censors can be tricked and still you'll be able to cuss if you really want.

Thing is several ppl got angry at the same time about different things. And also at least two completely different debates took place in parallel. I guess it's up to you to decide which part or debate was the most relevant, important and/or new (William's behaviour and/or complaints have been discussed in many other threads, for instance).

We sure k.n.o.w. that.
But does it mean we can't tune the system a bit to try and make it more coherent ?

BTW, yeah... Couldn't sleep afterall. Maybe I'll try to stay awake till tonight.

yeah you delete all my posts LKioch pfft typical, you always disliked me straight from the beginning, is this favouritism that I see coming from you.
Well I wouldnt see anything different, so in future dont delete only MY posts, you didnt delete anyone elses, not that I would expect you to, because all you do is close and delete my stuff
Anyways {b}on-topic talking, this idea would lessen swearing in posts.
It would also make sure users dont swear accidently, or deliberately, because this new thing if it gets implemented will filter the words, and make sure that there are no swearing even if its like F*** or the real word with no censoring, it would automatically change the F word with no censoring to **** and it would change the users own post, so if a mod checks it then they cant see any swearing but just censors, that could be this new implementation in action.

Personally I dont think it's needed & it needs to be locked imediately.

The auto-censor feature of HC community is not there as a "trap", it is there because we moderators (and the Admin) are actually human beings who are not always here. As much as it may seem to some that we are omnipresent beings that exist only to check and doublecheck that you are posting in a manner that holds to what you agreed to when you joined HC - we actually have lives too.

So, if in our absence someone decides that the CoC is optional for them - the auto-censor serves to protect other readers from being punished by our lack of diligence.

It really bothers me that some people have such a problem with being asked not to cuss on the forums. I cannot for the life of me fathom why anyone feels that foul language is such a neccessity that they need to fight for their "right" to use it. Especially when the same people had no problem with agreeing to follow the rule when they joined in the first place.

In my personal experience, I have never once penalized a first time offender for forgetting to block out their words. I also have never penalized anyone who is posting something that they clearly feel strongly about, and its evident to me that the omission was just an error due to not thinking in the heat of the moment. In those cases I will simply edit the post myself and send a message reminding the poster for the future. I have never once had a problem with any member in any of those cases.

It seems to me that what is being forgotten here is that this feature is not implemented to trick anyone, its here to keep the forums clean when the moderators cannot. It also seems that some members are only looking at how this affects posters who aren't intending any harm, you are forgetting that there are also people who will come on here just to pollute the forums. Luckily *touches wood* we haven't had any major problems with that recently, but in the past we have had more than enough members who use cussing just as a means to be inflammatory. People who will write a giant post peppered with F bombs just for the purpose of writing those words as often as they can. This is where we really need the auto censor - when moderators are not here none of our members should be exposed to that kind of filth.

As far as the innocents go, we try to be as fair as possible. Any member who speaks to us about penalties will generally find them reversed when its clear that it was just an honest mistake and the person is willing to edit themselves - of course this isn't an automatic get out of jail free card, any member who has been warned and recieved leniency can't just count on that happening every time...

Contrary to popular belief, none of us in the modsquad enjoy giving penalties. We are not out to get anyone, and we didn't sign on as moderators because it seemed like a fun way to ruin people's enjoyment of our community.

With regards to the original idea of changing the censor to actually edit the post rather than mask the way it appears, I don't feel its necessary. The CoC asks that you use respectful language when you join, and by joining you agree to that. So if you honour the agreement, there is is no need to change the system.
