One thing people seem to be missing is this is not "The evilest character in a video game" being bad has nothing to do with being Evil.
Being Bad*** can be broken into a few things.
1) Kicking everybody's behind
2) Causing untold body count and/or destruction
3) Striking fear into your enemies heart (if your enemies are fearless like zombies or machines this part can be overlooked)
4) Looking good while doing it
Running through the games in my mind, however, nobody really stands out. IE the baddest of the bad. You have characters in RPGS that can level whole armies..Master Cheif from Halo, Various Hot females (like Lara Croft)..but nobody really says to me "This is the one that has to be the badest of the bad."

To be badass you must have STYLE. Only highly stylish characters can be badass. Wit, disregard towards opponents and STYLE... yeah, that's it.
A good example might be Alucard from Hellsing; he just is badass.
As for games, there are many... Anyone recalls Walton Simmons from Deus Ex? now THAT was badass.

I agree about alucard being one of the most badasses ever outside the gameworld..
But in the game world i also think its Dante from DMC

I'd say Loghain in Dragon Age: Origins fits the bill nicely. If we're talking Heroes it's obviously a tied contest between Sandro or Gauldoth (depending entirely on preference).

Well...Most Bad@$$ video character...
Most Bad@$$ male good guy would probably be Cole Train from Gears of War. He's just too awesome and his rant against the Locust Queen in the second one is pure gold.
Most Bad@$$ female good gal would most likely be Samus Aran. You don't see too many gals out there with loads of armor blasting the hell out of aliens. She's like female Masterchief with a personality.
Most Bad@$$ male evil guy would definitely be Jack of Blades. He is so powerful he is almost like a god, but knows his weaknesses and is extremely smart and calculated. He is closely followed by Diablo, Sephiroth, and Wesker
Most Bad@$$ female evil gal would probably be...hmmm...i dunno.
Most Bad@$$ character of all time would definitely be...(drumroll please)...Chewbacca from Lego Star Wars. He jumps on Stormtroopers and rips their limbs off. Nuff said.

He is without doubt one of the most Bad@$$ videogame characters of all time, he definitely tops Diablo in this one.

great character. he could have easily been some random bad guy, but he has quite an interesting psychology, for a video game character.
