I liked better in H4, when devils could summon demons every battle without having to sacrifice a stack

You don't need the pendant though, Devils are nice to gate, don't get me wrong, but they are not necessary. Beside the Horned Demons, Devils are my least used creature in the end-game mostly because I don't usually have enough of them to do anything big or important in a final battle. For me, they are really just a backup insurance plan, in case I want some Pit Lords.

you know gating is nothing without urgash call because your original stack hardly survive when gated troops comes into the attack.

This is why I mentioned their ultimate, making gating instant.

Then you must be doing something wrong or playing an unfavourable matchup like inferno vs dwarves. Gating is pretty strong as it is. Not to mention.. custom builds are almost always better than an ultimate.

I don't have a favorite but overall I seem to do the best with the Bones.

For the most part, I agree with most everyone's take on Inferno except that a decent stack of jumping demons with a little luck are good on the offense and can do some serious damage. Due to gating, I found Inferno harder to learn to play and stayed away from the faction for a while.

What I really enjoy about playing any of the factions; is the diversity between factions and also, that the upgrading-differences  need to be well understood. <imo>Some alternatives bombed, i.e. the Demons vs Devils but a lot of the time I like both and have to choose.

Another aspect is about planning/timing. I don't like the hellhounds at all because they are lost too easily but once they are upgraded and can attack w/o retaliation and can hit multiple targets they become very good.

Just curious, does anyone here use the "keep out of the battle" selection pre-battle? The fury and scout are two more units I can't stand using until they are upgraded.

I think I have the most fun with Inferno because of the added tactics of gating... and if I manage to get insta-gating from the ultimate ability it makes a person almost unstoppable.

Dungeon is pretty interesting though trying to make use of the elemental bonuses.  Plus I love it when I can get double minotaur and lizard bite attack!

Then the Necromancers are fun because for some reason I try very hard not to loose anything when I play as them.  I don't have the same paranoia with any of the other races...

I also like the Stronghold because you have to keep moving, and you are rewarded for attacking to it keeps me from playing very defensively.

@Markkur:  I actually have started leaving creatures out of combat a lot!  Furies, Genies, Vampires, Imps, Griffons...  As a rule of thumb it's those creatures of each race that the AI seems to hate with an unreasonable passion.  If I know I don't need them or if their numbers are too few to be very useful I leave them out so the AI can beat on bigger, less useful creatures.  I especially do this wile using Quantamos's EE mod because having an enemy hero in most the battles makes it a lot harder to keep those creatures alive!

That is exactly what led me to it...er, well, my Princess first We were playing PoD under "J", she as dungeon and I Silvan, when she asked; "should I leave them out?" She was talking about the furies since they were not upgraded yet and as you said they need to be preserved if possible. Up until that time I never even considered omitting part of my army, too impure I guess. I found out later that making 2 stacks of witches and hydras worked well in the early game.

Btw, how's that map coming?

Leaving units out is normal, even essential for good creeping. For instance you need only furies vs 3-4 speed units, only single stalker stacks versus shooters etc. All necro needs is a stack of skeleton archers, 1 skeleton warrior(in case there are shooters) and zombie fodder. Really depends on hero build ofc but dungeon, academy and necro can afford and should aim for a good magical hero. As such your units only need have a support role early on, after all what is gremlin shooting compared to a well-placed expert firetrap?

LOL, Markkur

One of the most intriguing things about much of the strategy people mentioned in the forums is that there's not all that much detail written on what to upgrade first at the start of a map (while everyone has an opinion on high-level hero builds).

Things like upgrading to stalkers, blood furies, crossbowmen, gremlin saboteurs, sprites then AAs/normal druids, skellies seem to me to be the first things to do for those factions in order to start creeping properly with no/minimal losses.  (Ofc there might be town building level restrictions for few days before then but aim is to get to those asap imho.)

er, yeah imho custom builds are always better than ultimate (you mean you'll go without all of defence/PoE, PoS, warmachines, luck, and mass suff/slow/confusion before the end game when it's already over?) & I don't even use griffins

@@Elvin,

I almost spilt my coffee in my lap Poor water-logged-ear-wax guys. Yeah, I like the traps but what do you use when you don't get the spell?

Maybe a half dozen Trappers would be good for the magic-hero too? Stay, stay, stay, you too...crack, kabam, kaboom, er kaBolt

@SKPRIMUS

I've wondered too why I've seen little mention of upgrade tactics.

Hmmm, maybe there should be a replay game challenge of a player using as little army as possible with magic the focus?

@Fulano

Hows that map (that you're making)coming...ALONG?

I enjoy Sylvan the most. Speed and versatility does it for me. Sylvan can turtle, Sylvan can creep, Sylvan can assualt, Sylvan can rush and Sylvan can charge.

Sylvan Great differences in Hero Specialties. Wingaal and Vinrael have very creative (if Imba) specialities. Dirael really PUSHES you to think outside of the box with her unconventional speciality and starting skils.

I also really enjoy Academy (easy creeping, great unit variation), Haven (again, easy creeping in addition to great synergy, huge versatility between the two upgrades) and Stronghold (which plays so DIFFERENTLY in comparison to the other factions).

I do not really enjoy any of the others much. Necropolis and Dungeon are fine in their own, but I just don't like the factions themselves. (Additionally, Dungeon's creeping is so methodical it becomes VERY dull to me). Fortress is MUCH too slow of a start for my tastes. Inferno is just never... fun.

not 100% magic the focus, but the creeping challenge thread with insights by some of the great players like Elvin & Zenithale seemed very good.  The replays posted are no longer downloadable (I have the replays if you want) but the posts on timing & pics are often enough to get an idea of their strategies.  Only pity is it didn't go for longer.

How in the world can Fortress (heroes 5 version with dwarves) be so high on this survey? Did it happen just as HoF was released? Dwarves are so boring!!!!

Academy, Necro, Dungeon, Orcs, Sylvan are all pretty darn fun. I can see anyone justifying them as the most fun to play.

I like inferno in theory but playing it is boring in actuality a lot of the time.  They should be all fiery action and fun but for some reason they aren't. I think it's the weak start and lack of shooters or spell power?

Haven is a sleeper faction. Plain units, too easy. So vanilla HoMM.
