Hello, I've decided to enlighten this topic a little bit
The previous posts indicate that most of you go for log and war machines  for faster creeping, If you are taking balista, that means you always go for flaming arrows yes? correct me if I'm wrong, but for a multiplayer game vs a human opponent I think i rather use battle frenzy and retribution than archery and flaming arrows,
And another question, the most common heroes mentioned here are : the pounder and the centaur captain ones (sorry but i have a bad memory for names, esp, orc names) what about that Chick with the Blood Drinker abillity, she sounds good too, i think?

Flaming arrows are not necessary, as for warmachines it depends how hard the creeping on the specific map is. If it is and you go for retribution the faster player gets the goodies and stomps you to the ground. Garuna is pretty good yes.

Start killing the opponent's stacks and you will see. Especially fun if he has small spellcasting stacks. Orcs tend to have 5-10 attack higher than most factions, if you start adding 5 attack for each stack the damage can reach ridiculous levels.

Edit: Make it 4 for most maps.

Isn't preparation good for centaur nomad and warmonger?
If an enemy does a melee attack vs centaur nomad with preparation, does your centaur run away before the hit and retaliate?
If so, won't the attacker miss coz nomad is to far away?

Orcs lose Blood Rage for defending. Preparation may still have some value especially with Taunt, but you need all the rage you can get.

Never tried but defensive strategies are not part of orcish warfare That is very situational to work, besides you lose rage each time you defend.

I don't think Nomands would run off before attacking (not certain)
and noone I know would willingfully attack defending Warmongers
not defending Warmongers as well for that matter.
and yes, getting Rage up is a better pay off

Ok didn't think of losing rage points, ofc it can't be worth it. And my idea was to use warmongers + preparation for creeping, maybe the neutrals are stupid and attack defending warmongers, but now i don't think it's worth it either. thx for advice.

btw: is excruciating strike worth getting, or should i go retribution and maybe flaming arrows?

Could work nicely in creeping but you don't need warmongers for that. With Telsek this could possibly shine though

Excruciating strike can be nice with Kragh but otherwise I avoid. It's not as good with powerful blow as it is with mark of the damned but with stun bonus it can occasionally save your hide. Typically you get warmachines for fast creeping so flaming is usually a pretty good pick as long as the battle is played out before lategame. If the game is long then retribution is great.

Just wanna add my two cents. First off my opinion is that the first set of upgrades for Orc focuses on brute strength while the second set focuses on cunning. Except for goblins, anyway. Feel free to contradict.

Trapper vs Witch Doctor, Witch Doctors are situational. Trapper works best with Sky Daughter, and is great for creeping especially if you split them into other stacks so you can lay more traps early game... really effective for land-walking melee types. Split trapper stacks+centaurs can work wonders at week one.

Nomad vs Marauder, Marauder is too situational I think. In the very few battles where you think the centaur is better off pulling his weight in melee attacks and where maneuvering could be deadly then Marauder. Most battles, I'd pick nomad.
Then again Marauders also work best with Warmongers, and together they make up for the centaur's large size and the fact that certain creatures can easily reach the centaur at the first or second turn.

Mauler vs Warmonger, depends whether I think careful planning is more effective than just plain attacking. Mauler is obviously superior for killing, perfect for all-out assault situations and most large battles in late-game. You actually don't have to make Warmongers Defend - Defend helps, but Rage is often better. Repositioning them around the units which you think your enemy is gonna hit next is also a better alternative to just letting them stand there and lose rage points. You can try splitting them into several stacks around your centaur or other units early game when you don't have the resources for other creatures yet (what with the odd resources requirements of barbarian buildings).

Sky Daughter vs Earth, Sky Daughter for early game and Earth for late definitely, although Sky Daughter is also nice if the enemy has trouble reaching you for some reason like during sieges, as mentioned. Chain Lightning is very powerful early on. I usually split my Sky Daughters into two stacks, they get to haste/slow more units that way.

Executioner vs Chietain is like Mauler vs Warmonger. Planning vs all-out assault. In large battles Mauler is definitely the best choice, but in smaller battles and early game the ability to make your centaur's/sky daughter's/wyvern's/mauler's/goblin's turns come even just 1 unit earlier is better (along with +initiative aura). Splitting them into different stacks is very useful early on.

Not enough experience with Stronghold to make judgment on Wyverns and Cyclops. I usually use Pao Kai and Evil Eye, but only because by the time I get them it's already late game. Hope this can be useful.

Some small questions:

1 - Does the number of warmongers influence the percentage of them taunting the opponent?

2 - Do we have the exact numbers on that percentage somewhere? Is it influenced by soldiers luck?

3 - I'm trying to figure out a strategy of positioning a couple of 1 warmonger stacks nearby centaurs against fast opponents with high ini (such as dragons, phoenixes, angels and paladins) to decrease the likelyhood they will hit the cents with their first charge. Is there any optimal positioning?

I am normally trying it like this:
------|
---oXX|
---oXX|
(where the "X"s are a centaur stack and the "o"s are warmongers)

Thx in advance,
W.

It's hp based so you wouldn't want to split them for maximum effect. Not sure about actual numbers, must be in the manual.

I looked in the fan manual and the manual... all I could find was a descrption of the ability but no formula sorry. It was posted on HC somewhere before and I'm pretty sure it was HP based too (aswell as being affected by Soldiers Luck). One thing I do not quite understand though... in your picture the enemies would come from the left right? So when facing dragons that wouldn't really make sense would it? Because they'd basically deepfry you through the warmongers no matter whether taunt triggers or not. So which part am I not understanding correctly?

*argh, can't resist posting - you're not talking about HAGGASH are you*
I answered Azagal's question similarly here & so repeating myself

"...taunt is listed in p318 of H5TotE v3.1 manual under creature triggering abilities so I would say YES as all these abilities should be affected by soldier's luck.{real in-game probabilities - that would be another thing to test, 20 tests should do, hehe}"

Regarding 3rd question: Considering placement, I suppose possibility of a first-up dragon breath is not too bad?  The best situation is like in this memorable replay: shameless plug...woulda been even "better" if he had 2 x death embrace set for additional -1 movement

I was waiting to see if Elvin would be modest...I'm also sure he knew that type of battleground would show up

On a serious note, wouldn't one only need one warmonger stack vs large creatures & I'd have to consider the rest of the orc army strength to see which 2 stacks my warmongers should be adjacent to & which stack can also take a drag breath/double skewer (like bloodeyed with its higher defence maybe)...

but that's prollly a not very good example because I'm not great playa

I've been continueing my search for the formula (without luck) and I stumbled across that one aswell. And I think you're actually wrong SK. I mean apart from not really answering the question (the formula is needed, not whether it's affected by soldiers luck). And I checked the manual. One page 318 we have the astrologer tower, sanctuaray and other stuff. Between page 315-316 we have the abilities that trigger. And taunt is not listed so it's apparently not affected by soldiers luck.
I think where taunt should be explained is page 324 where they explain how the Gobos work but unfortunately it isn't and we're as clever as half an hour ago. Well not really since we know that it's not affected by soldiers luck now but the real question is still unanswered.

And why would he be talking about Haggash?
