I still don't understand why so many people have such a strong connection with HoMM3 Fortress. I can understand people that demanded the return of the Stronghold, it is one of the core HoMM factions, but Fortress... It's been around for one installment only and except for the Hydra none of its creatures were used in HoMM before HoMM3 or in HoMM4, so why does it have to be in HoMM5?

wooooooooooooooow...... don't you get it, it's just a name! besides you couldn't call the swampy place back in h3 Fortress cause it sucked real bad and everyone hated it. 3DO should have called it Swampy piece of *beep*. and like Mlai said, Fortress is a way better name for the Dwarf faction since it's like fort-ress so it means it's highly defended and stuff. can't beleive someone asks such a stupid question.

Prepare to die.

Seriously though, lots of people did like it. You're not everyone, so don't speak for them.

Also, the Fortress in H3 did have leaders. Their nation was Tatalia. I don't think it was ever established who exactly rules them, but I think it's a council of a mix of gnolls, lizardmen and humans.

I like that pic. Those Hydras are definately the way I would picture them.

I sincerely believe H5 is lacking one thing which H3 did have - monsters. Sure, every faction has about 1 or 2 monsters amongst the lineup, but what I really miss a monster / beast faction such as H3 Dungeon or Fortress featuring  4 - 7 actual beasts.

I understand some think it doesn't make sense, but for some factions, it really did work out.

Regardless of the name, I think the dwarf faction is a poor substitute for the reptiles. Name and strategy were the same, defense, with the difference dwarves use runes for offense whereas the reptiles used interesting abilities.

I think many agree the diverse reptile version was a lot more interesting than the H5 version featuring 6 x 3 versions of a fricking dwarf... Depends on what you like to look at I guess.

I agree i prefered the town setup of homm three.
It would be ok if there were 2-3 people representing the race but not 5-6. it just dosn't feel right fortress may have only been around for one installment but it was a good one.
fortress in homm three was a rusher faction and could defend in a seige. (rusher as in wyverns day one gorgons day 3).

I do agree that Fortress in H5 is very boring... 6 versions of a dwarf and some are somehow giant-sized.

They're dealing with Dwarves FCOL... Where are the cannons?  The Scorpio ballista?  The bomb chuckers?  The steampunk war machines?  Having a dwarf faction is always the perfect chance to introduce gunpowder and steam-powered robots into a fantasy game.

I would have probably liked to see something like that but the current build about forge and fire is pretty amusing I prefer runes and special abilities to technology but I'd be open for something new in H6.

About the topic, fortress is just a name so the H5 one is not an evolution of the previous one - apart from the defense and tricky abilities theme. I like both but they are not in my top factions.

I'm not going to knock H3.  For its time it was a terrific game and was a worthy successor to H2.  Times have changed though.  And if you look at all the rules people have for competitive multi play you're like missing out on half the game.  Seriously.  You ever go to rooms on the Zone and see

"Zomg XL Random no Necro, Logistics Specialists, D-Door, Fly, Hack, T Portal, 4th Level Spell Specialists, Conflux, Exp Earth, Exp Air, Dwellings, Utopias, Fun!!"

While owing much to H3 and a little to H4, H5 is a natural evolution of the game.  You have heroes that interact more with the battlefield(plus from H4), but they can't die(minus from H4).  Creature specialists are worthwhile now.  Straight might heroes aren't as overpowering as they used to be.  And for multi-play, the godsend of simul turns has, well, I don't think I would have ever gotten involved in multi-play again without simultaneous turns.

On the minus side, H5 is so demanding resourcewise that many people are unable to play it because their comps aren't up to spec.  And that sucks.  One of the hallmarks of HoMM was accessibility for everyone.  Ah well, you have to take the bad with the good sometimes.

As for the name itself, like Elvin said, there is no similarity between the two aside from the name.  You can't compare the two without looking at the striking differences between the two games.  I for one don't care that factions are dominated by this or that type of creature.  That dwarves take up six of the seven slots doesn't bother me.  What matters to me are plausibility, do they make sense, and whether the factions are sufficiently different from each other that they offer different styles of play.

H5 does that.  Nival made a winner here.

I totally agree. H5 TotE has great potential. Unfortunatelly it's very demanding resourcewise. I play it 640x480 with lowest effects and still i lag badly when playing large maps(I cannot really enjoy the graphics - resolution is so bad that i cannot see numbers of creatures when having scouting).  But it's the gameplay that I really like. Game seems well balanced and races are so different that always new strategies come in mind .

I really do love HoMM V. It truly is a great game, and I look forwards to HoMM VI. I just miss my Fortress. Call it silly nostalgia, but I loved it, for the one game it was in, and now it's gone.

You're saying fun in playing it doesn't apply to you? I'm pretty devestated having to look at the same ugly dwarf face every tier till 6....
