[Working] Unique heroes models

The pack is not final, and any hero already inside the pack is not final. This is only the first steps: collect separate .h5u mods, improve when possible and add when missing.
As I'll be updating the packs regularly, there is one .rar archive per faction, containing the separate .h5u files.

Latest updates:
- 05 January 2008: updated Nelgirith Stronghold pack to 1.4

----

Academy - download (10.6Mb) - NOT FINAL
- Faiz: good. A few tweaks of his face could make him look more like his icon.
- Galib: really nice! (sadly, I don't think we can add his face)
- Havez: this is the same model as Narxes. Some tweaks (eye patch, colors...) should make him more unique. I don't like the color models (on the side of his cape)
- Jhora: Well, sorry but I find the model just ugly. She's not supposed to be a fury, she should be a little more dressed (artwork), and the modder making her texture tried to paste her face from her icon, but this doesn't account for the texture deformation and orientation. All in all, we need a new one here.
- Narxes: good. A few tweaks on the textures could make him even better (eyebrows, beard...)
- Nathir: good.
- Nur: not bad, but it should really be improved
- Razzak: good. Here as well, the texture could be improved (eyebrows...)

Dungeon - download (3.54Mb) - NOT FINAL
- Eruina: ideally, her clothes could be made more like in her artwork.
- Kythra:
* Mounted: the clothes do not match her artwork
* Unmounted: fine
- Lethos: default model
- Sinitar:
- Sorgal:
- Vayshan: the colors of his cape are not the same as its icon and artwork. It should be violet and gold, not blue and orange.
- Yrbeth: maybe her hair could be shortened (in Yrbeth_LOD-Shadya_LOD_add.(Texture).dds), and her top updated to match her artwork.
- Yrwanna: same comment (artwork) - cepheus has a nice edited texture already

Fortress
- Brand:
- Ebba:
- Erling:
- Helmar:
- Inga:
- Ingvar:
- Karli:
- Svea:

Haven - download (4.0Mb) - NOT FINAL
- Dougal: his face should be reworked. Ideally, maybe he would have a bow, not a shield.
- Ellaine: ok. A little too much violet maybe?
- Irina:
* onGriffin: the griffin always has the idle animation, even when moving. Can't we do better?
* onHorse: ok, less specific than onGriffin, but at least the anims work correctly
- Klaus: should we keep the helmet?
- Laszlo: Laszlo already has a model (with a red cape). If he is on foot, at least use a hero model (like Godric) instead of a swordsman
- Maeve: ok. The cape shouldn't be yellow, though
- Rutger: his face should be reworked, at least
- Vittorio: his face should be reworked, at least

Red Haven
- Andreas:
- Benedikt:
- Bertrand:
- Gabrielle:
- Lorenzo:
- Valeria:

Sylvan - download (6.66Mb) - NOT FINAL
- Anwen: strike + change her top
- Dirael:
* Sprite: make her top as in artwork
* Matriarch: ok
- Gilraen: should be a WarDancer, not an archer
- Ossir: ok
- Talanar: anims + strike
- Vinrael: no model yet, and I'd rather have a specific model for him, as he is really different from the default model
- Wyngaal: anims
- Ylthin: she should be riding a unicorn, like the default model

Inferno - download (7.69Mb) - NOT FINAL
- Alastor: Only Agrael should mount a lizard. And Alastor has no helm. Maybe starting from Orlando's model?
- Deleb: ok, except for the blue (player color actually) things at her feet
- Grawl: same comment as Alastor. Here, the helm fits though, so I think Agrael unmounted should be better start
- Grok: too red. Who knew the fastest demon lord was a pit lord?
- Jezebeth: too close to the creature model
- Marbas: a war dancer? for a demon lord? we need another model here!
- Nebiros: this is a demon lord! Great!
- Nymus: the blue color doesn't fit (player color). (Nymus' face reminds me of King Vega in Grendizer - maybe they're related? )

Necropolis - download (10.2Mb) - NOT FINAL
- Deirdre: camera? I'm not fond of Beatrice's model for Deirdre - maybe because of her hair - her posture doesn't feel right
- Kaspar: anims? camera?
- Lucretia: anims? camera?
- Naadir: anims? camera?
- Orson: anims? camera?
- Raven: anims? camera?
- Vladimir: default model. I don't think the default model is a match, but who should use it?
- Zoltan: anims? camera?

Stronghold - download (5.90Mb)
- Garuna: face painting
- Gorshak: great
- Haggash: face painting
- Kilghan: ok
- Kragh: eye patch
- Shak Karukat: remove helmet?
- Telsek: fur color on helmet
- Urghat: why green?

I'll keep the first post for monitoring the project progress, and start commenting here. Note that I'm listing my own comments here. Others can have different views, and are welcome to express them. Moreover, my comments are not at all targeted at the original authors: I really respect the wonderful job they did, even if I happen to have a different take on some designs.

I'm listing my issues here, so that we can discuss the heroes models, and talented photoshop artists can do their magic. I'll play with some textures myself when I have the time. I could have edited some colors already, but I didn't want to delay starting the topic and discussion. Plus, it should really be a public process anyway.

About Dungeon heroes:
- Eruina: ideally, her clothes could be made more like in her artwork.

- Kythra: same comment (artwork). Daion-Fang made a model like that already. I'd like her to be on her lizard, though, but maybe on foot is fine too.

- Yrwanna: same comment (artwork), but it's really a detail.

All in all, I like this line-up. The heroes look like heroes (except Vayshan who could be bigger - but the model fits his specialization), the colour variations are nice and discrete.

The first one is Kythra, I prefer for Daion-Fang's model because too many lizards already. I increase its size. i change her animation gesture into biara's animiset. However, thre is one problem i encountered with this mod. It seems no close-up animation in combat scene. Hope someone to teach me.

Update:
Necropolis heroes added, Dungeon/Kythra-2 and Haven/Irina.
Kythra-2 has the Matriarch shot. Yche2990 suggested Biara shot instead. Tell us what you think.

About yche2990's post:
Nice catch for Vayshan's camera, as well as Kythra's and Irina's models. I've used Irina with complete armor (but the light armor is only a one texture replacement).

About Devo's post:
What do the models you link to bring compared to the ones displayed in the first post?
As far as I'm concerned, the Dungeon girls are farther from their artwork and have with less variety. Jezebel and Deleb seem to use Biara's model, which I agree could be a fine option the mod you link to contains far more than that btw).
About Lucretia, I just added a similar version: it seems only the sword is different.

I suggest the Matriarch Slot with Kythra.

@sfidanza :
Concerning Dungeon , I just bring some alternative models. Each player should have his point of view about models and I do not want certainly to impose my ideas. If you prefer to appear closer to the "official" pictures, not of problem
Regarding to Lucretia no the problem either

@Devo:
You're right about getting everyone's opinion. That's why I'm asking why they would be better for you.

Actually I should explain more the goal I have in mind.
There are indeed two steps at least: listing all existing models is a first one, but an essential second one is sorting everything, so that we can identify a "default" one for each hero (possibly with alternate options when there are good ones). The second step also means tweaking some models when they can be improved.

The idea is that having a mainstream package and alternate options always lead to a more widespread distribution than competing unsorted packs (often incomplete, especially with Barbarians). When Shadow and Daion-Fang released their pack, it assumed that role. With Fortress and Stronghold, the topic needs some cleaning, a few more models, and I'd like to make it more user-friendly and give it more publicity.

This leaves the hard task of choosing a "default" model. Which is not so hard since it doesn't mean at all forgetting other options: these will only have to be packaged separately. The "default" model is the one supposed to appeal to most players, and feel the most "original" as in "could have been made by the developer". In this context, I think the correct criterion is to look as much as possible like the original artwork. Of course this is a guideline not a strong rule.

I'd like to emphasize a few points:
- having a complete "default" pack also allows to release individual alternates, to cater to more people. The packaging itself can still take various forms: one big .h5u, multiple .h5u in a .rar (per faction, per hero), possibly several of the above if needed.

- the basic goal is to refresh the existing models when needed, add the missing ones, and definitely spread the word afterwards. Even if my idea of a "default" set is not shared, we will at least have a complete set, and a clear view of the existing mods. Which we need to spread the word.

- finally, I hope this will also set a foundation for modders to work on hero models: both in reviving interest and providing a template mod. Having a cleanly organized template is always helpful to less experienced modders, and separate .h5u certainly makes it easier than a big pack. I've started refactoring files inside the mods (greatly inspired by Sneps), to make the organization more systematic and avoid conflict between heroes.
Obviously, there's a tutorial to write about the topic.

I'm pretty good at refining existing textures to make them look more meticulously like the original artwork.  I can also do more than boring recolourings to make the heroes more personalised.  Here's my Yrwanna:

There are slight problems with the Alpha Channels since I don't have Photoshop to fix them, but that's not hard to mend.  It's poor quality since it's viewed in the Map Editor.

@Devo: the mod with the latest dates should take over. Should I send you the .h5u for light_armor?

Heya,

I just started browsing these forums, and checking on the model changes, and so far I'm really enjoying myself.
A question, though... how exactly can I use the Jezebeth and Deleb models in game? They come in h5m format instead of h5u.

Thanks

If you have ToE or H5 1.6, just rename the .h5m into .h5u, and do as usual.
This is still a work in progress, and a thread about working, that's why there can be some not completely usable links. But we'll smooth things out along the way.

I should have the sylvan heroes packaged later tonight.

1st post updated with Sylvan heroes. I made an archive per faction, for easier update.

Sylvan comments:
* Talanar and Anwen should attack through the battlefield, not ranged
* anims still have to be checked (rangers require specability, cast, bless, rangeattack, idle00)
* Anwen: I worked on improving her face and hair (now, before), but her top still needs some work
* Dirael: is there a way to slow down her move anim speed, without slowing down the movement itself (and without making her shudder)?
* Gilraen: should be a WarDancer, not an archer
* Ossir: ok
* Talanar: anims (see above)
* Vinrael: I'd rather have a specific model for him, as he is really different from the default model
* Wyngaal: anims (see above)
* Ylthin: she should be riding a unicorn, like the default model

Since I didn't comment the last update, here they are.

Haven (only Irina is in the pack):
* Irina: the griffin always has the idle animation, even when moving. Can't we do better?

Necropolis:
* I didn't fix the cameras yet, and I still have to better check the anims
* Deirdre: I'm not fond of Beatrice's model for Deirdre - maybe because of her hair - her posture doesn't feel right

There are many creature models (and in Sylvan as well), so I'll make a global point for these: I still don't know where to stand about them. Basically, the drawback is that (enemy) heroes on the adventure will be more easily confused with creature stacks. If they could be made bigger, maybe it would be less confusing. Another issue is the arena animation: creatures usually don't have all the required anims (ranged, cast, bless, specability).
On the other hand, keeping the same model for everyone, simply changing some colors isn't always possible. Especially for female heroes.
What do you think? Is there a way to scale a model (it's possible for an effect, so maybe for a model as well)?
