Yeah, I'm getting the same feeling. I'm just getting too old for this. When I see something truly touching I can even get teary eyed in anime, but seeing this pathos cr@p all over again in shounen makes me cringe.

And the rape scenes. Although this can be seriously off-putting in anime I understand it's sometimes a plot device to play on the viewers emotion. But in SAO it's almost always done the same exact way: a creepy dude slurping with his tongue like some kind of a caricature. And this can be done "right", like one of the most powerful scenes in Mirai Nikki.

Alright, I can't get over the fact that I saw this question in an anime: "The Christians were originally all united as one, but why do you think they have split up into so many different churches?". And I just instantly paused to come up with an answer of my own before resuming, and the answer they gave was actually pretty spot on. If you guess the anime, you know what I'm watching right now.

I rewatched that scene. The enacting was right, in the sense it was "realistic", but the fact that some high school girls can get a bunch of boys to rape someone against their better judgement just pushes suspension of disbelief to a whole new level.

EDIT: I'm trapped in shonen hell, somebody he--
But seriously, this is getting kinda depressing. I hope I haven't made a huge mistake picking this up, because there's many seasons... and many hopes... and just not enough time to get disappointed by all.

You're probably reading too much into this. This has happened with more or less everything, people just don't have the same personal wishes/values/interpretations.

Speaking of shonen, I started doctor Stone on a friend's recommendation. Interesting beginnings, then they restore a guy that can oneshot lions, break statues with his bare hands, is a natural hunter with zero practice and can catch crossbow bolts in flight. They went full shonentard. Never go full shonentard

Am I? It's not an easy question to answer. People will always think or do whatever they want, that's just a given. What makes the difference is the reason behind it, if it's valid or not, and that's the crux of the problem. You have many cults and denominations today falling under the name of "Christianity", and what truly matters from that point of view is how they abide the Bible, because that's the only grounds you can have when talking doctrine. But realistically, it's never as much about doctrine as it is about politics, positions and struggles for having an upper hand. Historically, that's very obvious, not only just because of wars and crusades and inquisitions, but also because of culture, science and education.

But yeaaaaaa....... that's enough on that topic.
Anyway, Toaru Majutsu no Index has that kind of "plot" where you get tossed one of those questions, so not entirely besides the point. Was it bad? It was never uplifting, that's for certain. It's the world building route they decided to take, and it's honestly unfortunate because of the hot topic it is. I'll probably never see an anime with religious stuff that I'd like, it's a very strict boundary for me. Props for trying though.
But to be honest, that's not my main gripe here. My biggest issue is the shonentard, shonencringe and shonentropes that gave me stage 3 facepalming. I had so many moments rolling my eyes and wondering about the reason why I was trying so hard to pull through, and it was always in hope that I'd catch up with the series and get to the "good parts", which now I wonder if they even exist. I watched it all the way, but I'm so fed up with it already. Not sure if this even worth a 6/10, but yea, fairly disappointing so far.

Dr Stone rant incoming.. Spoilers.

[- Why did Senku keep the back of his neck petrified? Wasn't it uncomfortable or something?
- Why lure Tsukasa before the weapons were ready or any kind of preparation made? Other humans could be unsympathetic or even hostile and there were more pressing matters.
- How does cracking your neck guarantee that someone will go for your neck instead of push you off a cliff or stab you in the heart?
- Why not even give a heads up on how to restore him?]

I understand that resources and tools were limited but wtf? Is that the best plan he could come up with?

Ah no spoilers past ep 10 please. I've managed to avoid them so far

That's only the beginning, best brace yourself. The further it goes, the more far-fetched it gets.

Also, blob2. This list here: Summer 2020, is inexplicably missing Oregairu 3. And I am DEFINITELY going to watch that one. Still debating if while airing or not.

I watched Dr Stone some time ago so I don't remember all the sillyness, but yeah, the series had its share of wtf moments. On the other hand it's a pretty cool concept that the MC uses brains as his OP superpower in contrast to so many other shounens...

About Oregairu 3... I didn't watch the series so can tell how big of an ommitment it is (although I did hear it's pretty hyped).

Unfortunately this season also took some corona-hits. A few series are already postponed: Akudama Drive, Higurashi, Haikyuu or Slime S2 have all been moved to Fall, while some series will be emitted no faster then July...

PS: Btw Shingeki recieved a pretty nice S4 trailer (be careful it's pretty SPOILER heavy). It's interesting to see they'll squeeze in all the material to make it the "final season".

It's only the second most anticipated TV series next season after Re:Zero according to MAL. Inexcusable omission.

Corona-hits are also sad. Wasn't exactly looking forward to Slime 2 though after the end of first season. They dropped the ball at some point.

Man, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun is so much better than the main series, I'm at episode 12 and can already tell. It's still plagued by shonen tropes and silly stuff at every corner, but at least there's some good scenes and no cringe MC to scream his justice at everything.
EDIT: Eh, let's say 7/10. Still an improvement. Damn, how many seasons before it actually gets good?

I know it's popular. I watched first ep. Totally not my style of characters and interactions. Maybe I wasn't in a mood. Maybe sometime in the future. For now it's a pass...

Tenki no Ko, another one of Shinkai Makoto's signature movies. This one though... I mean, it's kinda getting predictable at this point. [...] It didn't surpass Kimi no Na wa, even though it was fairly good.

More or less how I felt. It took a while to get off the ground and could use a trimming or at least allocate its time in a more engaging way. It did not particularly captivate me during most of its run but there were some good moments.

Quote:
Weathering With You - is just another Shinkai Makoto-esque movie that recycles the "boy and girl fall for each other" theme, with supernatural occurences as the plot driver, scenary porn and jpop music abound. The story and characters woefully lacked detail and depth, so your enjoyment would depend on how much you can tolerate this lack of detail and depth, and ultimately, how much you can sympathize with the characters.

This quote perfectly sums things up.

Toaru Majutsu no Index II and then the movie. It started off lackluster and I was bored out of my mind, but then... it turned out decent around the end? Could it be? Am I finally getting to the good part? Can I hope the next seasons are actually good?
Is Index finally going to grow up or stop being annoying or kick the bucket already? Is Touma?
Honestly, my expectations were lowered so much throughout these seasons that I would be shocked to find that the only way left is somehow not up. 7.5/10 for both, some interesting moments at the end of the season and the movie at least had good resolution and visuals.

EDIT: ALRIGHT, NEVER ****ING MIND THAT! I got so excited over something I just found.

Man, I don't visit this thread regularly mind you . Shame I didn't know about you being a fan of Bleach, would have let you know. Imo the manga went downhill after Arrancar arc, but finishing the anime adaptation was a long standing meme so it's good they're on it. Hopefully the Openings will deliver as Bleach has some of the best ones in the history of anime. They announced it back on some event related to the author. The new manga from him which will have anime adaptation also looks kinda dope.

Btw, this fall anime also looks super interesting Fumetsu no Anate e.

And I don't personally know this one but heard a lot of good things about it Jujutsu Kaisen, that it's similar to Bleach albeit darker and breaks some shounen-y schematics.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure... You already knew, uh-huh. Waaaaaaaaaaaaay before anyone else I bet. But you just didn't know to tell us because, like, who would be fan of Bleach nowadays, right?
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.................

But anyway, I finally saw a good season with Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S, minus the very obviously rushed ending. 8.5/10 this one. I bet production was like "AMAGAD THERE'S NO MORE AIR TIME" while the roof was on fire. The sisters arc was the big takeaway for me this time around, it looked and felt SO much better than in Majutsu, fleshed out a lot of the action and characters depicted there. It felt heavy and could've taken a seriously dramatic turn, if it weren't for that pesky Touma again... Well, what can you do, the reassuring hero of justice and ideal was his role to play from the very beginning.

Yea, so far Kagaku seems better than the original Majutsu story, though there's this feeling of complementing each other and it actually works out. I'm slightly enjoying the series despite its flaws, if it just keeps it up, it's enough for me. Wouldn't mind being surprised though.

EDIT: Also Railgun S OVA short episodes are comedy gold, I lost it so hard on the 3rd one.

Oh yea man, I distinctly remember Bleach having one of the best suite of bangers in anime ever. Top of my list is Velonica and Alones, which I went out of my way to download with the best quality I could find. Hopefully the new ones won't disappoint either when it starts airing.

EDIT: I'll post this here right now, because I just can't take it anymore. Watching Toaru Majutsu no Index III, currently 12 episodes in, and I can say that this is the worst anime I've seen in a long time. If you're looking for an anime completely ruined by pace and storytelling, look no further. The plot also reached mind-blowing levels of stupidity and pretense. I've never felt dropping an anime this hard before.

EDIT: And then it became slightly good around the end... 7/10. Good visuals. Some cool moments, character development mostly. Disliked the pace and the pretense.

EDIT: Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator, interesting and promising premise in the story, acceptable visuals, Accelerator for some great scenes. And then... uneventful ending, typical shonen villain, plot execution felt rushed halfway in, characters not properly developed except maybe Esther and the siscon guy. I'm not sure how they dropped the ball so majestically, it was all going well and then it went to mediocre ****. 7.5/10 they blew it man.

EDIT: Alright. I'm currently watching the Re:ZERO kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu: Shin Henshuu-ban, the director's cut basically. I'm not sure I said it before when I saw this anime the first time around, but it's...so good man, so insanely good. One of the best I've seen. Top of my isekai list, I can't think of any other as good as this one. That episode where Subaru meets Betelgeuse... up to the end... one of the most memorable scenes I've seen. Still gives me the chills man. The world is so well constructed, the characters so believable, relatable. I could well call this a masterpiece. Can't wait for season 2.

Yep, I also recently realized it's the anime that I watched the most when it comes to replaying some scenes. After watching it a couple more times I've come to appreciate it even more, how well it is written:
SPOILER WARNING
- how f*cked up Subaru's situation was countless times (he literally went through so much madness one can wonder why he is still sane although he was a couple of times at the brink of loosing himself already), yet he ultimately evolves as a person
- how Subaru gets a meltdown when he's at his lowest and how perfectly Rem saves him then (while actually repaying him with kindness for his kindness when she needed it). I mean, a person who didn't go through depression won't understand this scene, the feeling of hating oneself for being a failure even if you try so hard (and how you thought what you did so far had a point but it didn't, at least in your book) even if it's for a moment. Watching these scene actually each and every line is perfectly written in context of the whole story to this point, and the mental health of MC. And yeah, what comes after is probably one of the most satysfying characters turn-around in anime history. But yeah most people are like f*ck you how could you dump Rem!? When you watch closely he actually didn't dump her as not only she was the first to do so (by refusing his proposal) and while he actually didn't dump her, something he shows later on
- the whole build up to the White Whale battle, the beautiful story of Wilhelms love or how Subaru used all the assets at his disposal to gain friends and allies to get what he wanted (revenge and saving his loved ones). The battle itself and it's conclusion (yep, the Wilhelm one: music, direction everything just clicks). Or how the post-battle scene with Crusch is so friggin satysfying you just can't contain your joy. And how he then proceeds to crush (pun intended) the Cult (while at the same time doing so much background work to bring Emilia hapiness)
- even the smallest scenes like Subarus face mimicry, his eyes, example: his anger in the scene when he restarts after he decides to get back at Betelguse after what the latter did to Rem, or his face when Emilia says "thank you for saving me" which is the culmination and conclusion of what he went through to reach this point

This anime is just perfect and I really hope it will keep at it in the coming season.
