6 player game to test out the towns. All except Fortress and Stronghold because those towns weren't released.

Myself and my friend tried academy on subterranean treasures. We got crushed by the 1.0 ai. It's a tough game for the uninitiated even if you've played previous heroes games.

Was sylvan for me but I have long since forgotten the details For some reason I tend to make good first choices in each game. Wizard in H2 that became my favorite, Necropolis with Tamika on H3 that was certainly good, academy in H4(no comment) and now sylvan is one of the better factions.

For H5 original I think it was academy in some scenario against necro... I was defeated in the end though 
For ToE it was fortress with Helmar on The Key to Victory as I've skipped HoF and thus didn't had the opportunity to try them out yet. Orcs I tried out in the demo already.

You've got that right. I'm just starting out and am using Haven. I really really like the game so far, but I can't win on anything but easy and with fog of war turned off. I have a hard time judging which creeps to fight and when. I know you can't sit around too long building up a force, but sometimes a 'moderate' tagged force will be easy pickens for me and other times I'll lose my whole entire army and the AI will come eat me for breakfast.
Build order, when/where to creep, and exploring in the beginning are a few things I'm having a hard time with. I've been looking but haven't found any threads that just talk about basic strategies. So if anyone has a link to something I'd really like to read it.
It seems the CPU knows right where his first Ore Pit and Lumber Mill are. And those buildings always have the easiest guards, and sometimes I might take 2 days to find them w/o fog and when I turn fog off after 2 turns the CPU always has his.
Anyway, Haven is my first faction.

Lempface are you playing random maps?
Anyway just keep playing and you'll learn soon enough. Keep in mind you only want to attack lower tiers in the first week, or slow walkers. Abuse spells to creep effectively.

First faction...Haven cause I never, ever played single scenarios in H5.In HoF (Only game I played single scenarios) it was Fortress.

I don't remember what I chose the 1st time I played H5, but the 1st time I played TotE I chose dungeon and eruina.

I first played Dungeon cause i had allways played dungeon in h3 and 4. and i choose sinitar because he looked the coolest (imagine how disappointed i was when i saw the dark elves).

It was in Heroes 2 and the choo was Dungeon (black dragon and offensive magic convinced me)
Heroes 3,4 and 5 -I started with Dungeon too.

The very first town was Heaven, in the Heroes 5 demo!
Then i got the original one, and played heaven again as the first town!
Then i got HoF, and i played as the dwarfs! 
And in ToTe i played as Academy as the first one!

If I remember correctly, the first scenario that I played was the Sylvan one with Ossir. But the first proper game in which I got to choose the faction was Dungeon.
