@Xerius: Nope. The bonus ends when the Wind Dancer's turn starts again. But, that's what "Dancing" is for, at least partially...

To "dance" means to move your unit to attack the same target it was attacking before even if you don't have to. (I can try to explain this better if you don't understand what I mean.)

Cavaliers and their upgrades do that all the time for the Jousting Bonus as well.

Yeah, just like Jousting, but "dancing" grants extra defense for that turn instead of damage.

So move the longest distance before you attack

Sylvan strategy - opening

Sylvan strategy - opening

Hi everybody,
I tryed to play sylvan faction little bit and I would like to ask you this questions.

Which hero do you prefer?

Ossir is the best at start, but he has not access to elven luck..

Wyngaal looks fine, but he is quite week at start. I am confused about his speciality, web page says, he adds 1% per lvl to initiative, game says 0,5% ....

Vinrael looks fine too, what strategy do you play with him?

I find hard to start with this castle, when I pick wyngaal. I have sometimes havy loses. With ossir it is much better, but I would like to go on elven luck...

Which hero do you prefer, how you play with him?

Elven luck can be forgotten with ossir, he is good creeper cause he starts with 11-16 hunters.I can't really say abouy wyngaal cause he is locked in most online games.Vinrael is good, not good as ossir though. Also Wyyngal's speciality boosts init by 1%.

@Doomforge: Yes?

Seriously, he's banned in like 99.9% of TOH games. Swift Striker is IMBA incarnate if you can get to at least level 20 (easily doable in most TOH maps).

Ossir is one of the favorites.  Think he has one of the easiest starts for Sylvan (not too easy, just easier then most).  With him my town building strategy is to get upgraded archers ASAP.  Arcane Archers makes creeping a lot easier.  Havn't perfected a skill build yet, or even come close..yet.

Wyngaal..he is a bit harder to start with then Ossir, but once you get him some levels he becomes a monster.  Your troops are so quick in battle it's over before the enemy can do anything.  Get an +Init artifact and you are good to go.

Sylvan is a slow and steady town more then a rush town.  Pick your battles cautiously.  I've known some who don't even fight until they have Arcanes...take only the creatures you KNOW you can take with little or no losses (1-4 deaths on your side at most).

*looks away intentionally*

Well, you CAN creep with Hunters, but anything besides slow/average speed walkers are probably going to cause massive casualties.

But then, that's what Pixie walls are for.

As for Sylvan builds, I like to get a magic school and Attack ASAP. Archery is a pretty awesome bonus for Sylvan and the magic school gives the Rangers something to do with their mana.

After that, if I have Destructive, it's on to Master of [blank] (fill in the blank with Fire if you have Fireball and fill it with Ice if you have Ice Bolt). For Light, I tend to pick Master of Wrath for Mass Haste and Mass Righteous Might. Also, Regeneration + Treants = easy creeping. If you know what you're doing, you can even creep casters (just make sure you have enough Treants to withstand a worst-case scenario first turn spell attack )

If I get offered War Machines, I take it. It's a 2% skill, and the temptation is too much to pass up.

Imbue Arrow will be your friend if you go Destructive. If you manage to reach Cold Death, have fun smiting your foes with an Ice Bolt (or Deep Freeze if you're lucky) enchanted arrow.

Also, I can't stress the following point enough:

Get Arcanes and Druids ASAP. Week 1 is recommended. Otherwise, things get nasty.

If I think of something else, I'll post it.

When is EndGame? Week 5 then YOU are the busted one.

Like all other factions, the elves must creep all of their kingdoms terrain's mines and deposits of minerals(overall kingdom's cleanup of neutrals and flagging all mines) by end of the second week.

You must concentrate at building a mighty army of level 1 to 5 as quickly as you can. The Pristine Unicorns are already the equivalent as the Champion's level 6 in the Haven town's ranking of troops. The P.U.'s are the level 5 creatures of the Sylvan Elves. Only about 25 of them will do fine against any enemy factions. A whole herd of 30+ P.U.'s will do wonders. The P.Unicorns' natural Aura of light magic will resist upto 100% the dark and destructive magics of any kind.

So, basically, make sure that, you are the one invading the opponents of any maps of any size by the end of week 5 or 6 no later. Past week 6, they will enter the terrains of your kingdom by both sides of it, plus the dimension gate as well. Three against one, not fair as for odds of winning, right?. Chances are, they will take their turns at attempting to invade your Capital City instead of fighting between themselves.

Furthermore, you have to have three heroes ready for intense battle with one as the Capital City's garrison of one full week of troops(least skilled one)and, two others with at least two weeks worth of troops each(including the outside of the city's level one and two dwelling's production). That is for a tiny, small and medium map size only. To be on the safe side, keep two weeks worth of troops in the Capital City's garrison and use only the original hero's from the start of the game to start a full scale invasion of all other opponents with three full weeks worth of troops(level 1 to 5).

Often enough, I try to invade the closest enemy kingdom by end of week 3. It is hard but, very doable with a very skilled start of the game's Hero and, have not lost too many troops in week 1 and 2. Make sure to have your war machines at the lowest price as possible by end of week 1.

I think that I have covered all the bases here.

BTW: The Hall of Fame's score chart is the only thing that truly counts in this game like all other video games. If you do not make the 10 first ranks, it is like as if you did no effort what-so-ever at winning the current finished map. You have to learn to finish the map before the end of month 1(30 days)in order to make and keep the 1st place of that map's chart(completely Championed it).

Good Luck playing and winning with the Sylvan Elves everybody!

@Lexxan: I agree. Too bad most of it is...[censored]...well, you get the idea.

@Elvin: I agree as well.

But, to keep this on-topic, I remembered some more tips.

Sprites and Druids are pretty good for creeping early, especially if you do not start with Ossir. Split the stacks of casters as spell power gain for units is not linear (in other words, while 1 Druid does 28 damage with Lightning Bolt, 2 Druids will not do 56.).

Once you get a fair amount of Treants (Regeneration or First Aid Tent that can resurrect is recommended as well) deploy them alone in battle against stacks of ranged units (the exception of course being Arcane Archers, since they can ignore defense, you may take more damage than you've bargained for ).

My mind is blank once again, so, you know the drill...

I'll be back if I remember anything.

playing sylvan there is no easy way to defeat casters/shooters early.

but try to creep all walkers etc as fast as you can,
you can take destructive/imbue as it's quite good combination
once you have this leap to elder druids you may want skip upgrading elves.

otherwise creep with archers they are good enough.

but neither of that helps you with powerful ranged stacks.

If sylvan had a hero with destructive magic from the very beginning, things would be way easier for the more newby part of the players. Sylvan seems to hard at start at times, and you always get arcane archers or casters guarding important mines

@Doomforge: AH!!! I hate it when that happens.

It's pretty bad when the randomizer decides it's cute to have Arcanes guarding the Gem Mine. Heck, I loathe seeing Assassins/Sprites guarding the Sawmill...free casualties almost guaranteed.

Hunter's are cool, but if you don't have them dryads and dancers will do fine. Dancers are very tough with sylvan and can be used to take on lvl3s such as bears or hounds, and dryads can very well play cat and mouse with most walkers. Ofcourse with hunter's things get much easier, you'll need them to take on utopia at least.

Vs mages and hunters your best bet is to get atack or war machines. Atack is great with sylvan because you can get frenzy and tactics, both great perks, and then simply rush the shooters. War machines is really a life saver with tent and imbued balista is real damaging at times.

I stand my ground onto the last post. This was upon my played game.

You all seem to have a very dysfunctional way to play or, the game you have must not be the official marketed one.

On a small RMG map of my game, at 8(7AI + me-human) total players, by week 4, any human player can just storm the neighboring enemy town and take it with almost no casualties what-so-ever. But, wait 2 more weeks and the winner of all the petty wars in between the AIs will become way too powerful and overwhelming for any human player to take it all(1AI with 7 cities and 1Human with only 1 city to conquer all others).

So, attack soon and, gain an extra 3 cities to even up the odds against the other 4 still owned by the last standing AI.

I used to do RMG maps like those on HoMM3-W.o.G. a few years back. Man! It was so challenging!

Well, in none of our games pristine unicorns have special anti- dark or destructive auras and they are far from equal to paladins/ champions simply because they aren't on the same level. There is also no max amount of units you should use, if you can get more units without needlessly delaying yourself and you have the resources to spare, you should, period. Lastly, there is no surefire way to get your warmachines "at the lowest possible price" other than going to a war machine factory (or whatever it's called) to get rid of the 3x price penalty for non- native machines, but they are rather rare. So at least those things are simply and utterly false.

Also, almost no-one plays small 8 player RMG maps with 7 AIs, in that case the game is decided by pure luck. So if you start writing strategies for those rare kind of games like it's a strategy to use in any kind of game you're simply doing the wrong thing.
