A tragic Pudding based death Omega? .
Even if not directly controlling a character, try not to put them into impossible situations that THEY will have to powergame out of. For instance, writing in a army of trolls guarding all possible exits is bad!

Find enough roleplayers to start and make the story very appealing and easy for others. And if you have few roleplayers and are eager to begin, don't ally them, in fact, turn them on eachother. Unless you wanna start a D&D game with a good DM.
It's why ww3 doesn't go well. We don't have very much of an angle, since most people start to cooperate, since they are the "good" nations (or at least nations of one alliance). I do not mean to offend the ww3 thread. It's a good idea and has potential, but I don't see it work out, actually.

Another tip that is quite good is to always use paragraphs when needed.
It isn't good reading a post that is like this:
Well I walked down the road today and I saw some of my friends walking down the road. I said "hi" to them however they did not respond. I got a bit scared since I actually couldn't see their faces properly and then they turned into ghoulish nightmare creatures of some sort. I started running as fast as I could possibly go and I finally found an old abandoned military bunker to go into. I was safe, for the moment anyway. I decided to get up from the ground and then check out the stuff that they had in there. I saw some old torches, old audio equipment, old computers, a few guns and some grenades to go along with them and some other stuff. I sat down on one of the chairs that was near the window and I closed my eyes and I slowly drifted off to sleep. I woke up with what seemed like 5 minutes only to hear scratching noises on the door. I was hesitant to get up. My body said yes but my mind was saying no. My body got the upper hand and I was moving towards the door. I opened it only to see one of the ghoulish nightmare creatures. It pushed me down to the ground and started to bite me. I picked up one of the guns and slammed it onto the creatures face. It seemed like it was dead or out cold and I now knew that I wasn't safe. I picked up some grenades and some guns and ammo and ran out of there only to see 50 creatures standing before me. They charged at me and ate my face off. That was the story of how I lived and yes I do realise that I did die, but this is me talking from Heaven. It is quite good up here although a little chilly at times. Anyway I am going now, going to have my daily massage with one of the angels. Bye bye.
It is never good to see any post set out like that because it makes things extremely hard to read. It isn't too much effort to press the [enter] key twice to make a paragraph.
I don't know if this has been said already, but I do find that an annoying thing and something that all people should try to avoid.

I'll be honest. All i see are tweaks and refining stuff. Which is good considering that may include the definition of a tip...
But I would, actually, appreciate some hints like on how to create a an interesting character or fascinating story or something...
Ow, well, so that this wouldn't be spam: If you use the "you" perspective, you can create an intimate environment with the character... It is the best, if you want to do that, but do it in conjunction with the "I"-perspective. i would give an example, but the only example I can give would be in dutch and I see little point in translating it, since the message wouldn't be the same.

This is more a tip for GM's/DM's. Try to avoid having NPC's as leaders..even if you know what you are doing. While characters using knowledge from outside the game inside it is bad, a gm doing it is 3x as worse.
Also, don't be inflexable. You may have had something planned in Mexico, but the group decides to go vacationing in Maui. Either adapt it to the current setting, or just let it go. Only so many times freak storms/spacial rifts/etc can have the characters where you need them .

If you have two characters and want to switch between them, you can use
with the end quote command, you won't actually have to type:

OK, it seems that help usually dies around here, when I ask specifics (prp is private roleplay btw, so it hardly matters)
You might want to read this column. it has a lot of helpful tips and good advice (I know that there are chapters, so only proceed if you have some sort of time commitment)

I stumbled upon this in my neverending quest of improving my roleplaying skills and found out this might help.
Also, I have a special request for all Reign of terror posters:
I don't need a novel, but at least you can type in something, instead of just one phrase, indicating your character's response to it. It's boring and a tad disrespectful to my attempts of bringing that thread to a maximum level. If you people desperately don't want to give your character some extra dialogue or form up a complete dialog on HCM or MSN, then you could at the very least, try to tell us what he thinks, why he's here or how does he look like or whatever is going on in it's environment. I know I'm almost acting like a GM, but I insist on keeping it freeform (goes off to copy this in the OOC-thread.)

I don't agree with most of what that guy says. Especially when he says like "none of us want to see xyz" which is not only false but speaks on behalf of everyone. He says that 'taking a town by himself' is boring, yet I'm sure every 'story' needs to have some sort of 'quest' for a mega-ultra-powerful artifact that can take on the entire city . I mean seriously, why does everything have to get boiled down to artifacts or "super equipment"? Personally I like scenes in which a good professional character takes an entire "unprofessional" town without resorting to an "ancient artifact" geez. So "none of us" seems to exclude me and I'm sure many others. I have no problem with 'perfect' characters in a certain area either. Sure having faults is interesting as well, but for crying out loud not everyone is the same, and some characters aren't even human, isn't it just plain unoriginal to make them have the same flaws as humans?
I don't RP mind you but I do read some stories. Maybe the above is a reason I don't. Maybe not, but then again, I'm not saying you need to have "Superman" characters in all of this, but being too "normal" unless you put your hand on some ancient artifact or "super equipment" is getting to bore me already. The characters should be imperfect because "the artifact fixes that" meh
and note: I'm not talking about "power" necessarily!
just my 2 cents on the subject.

I see your point, death, and if you already advanced a bit in the RP, it's not bad, when posted believeble and in a good way, sure, you can murder tons of dudes. BUT (nitpicking little chimp that I am) some players can only play if they are super awesome with speed of light characters and gigantic atomic bomb-like abilities that overshadowing all other players.
It's no fun with that. I mean, the further you're away from power, the longer your adventure can be and the better for the overall experience. At least that's what I think, but I'll read this article about capturing towns, now, before I possibly make an idiot out of myself.
And flawless characters are...
I don't know...
Let me illustrate:
flawless characters are never fun, because they will always be able to deal with certain problems and tend not to have personality traits that make them stand out in the crowd. So let's see.
Let's say I start a game and suddenly four guys pop up and offer to be the a great team of rogue, mage, warrior and priest. Let's say this priest is very pious, then maybe he might be pious enough to bug the rogue character (conflict is generally interesting IMO) the knight can be a macho that doesn't need all that fancy 'jibber jbber of the mage and may be comical relief. I see these as flaws, even if they are good.
So at one point I agree that a team of psychotics isn't fun at all, but I would like some spots on the character sheet to distinguish them andhave colorful interaction.
If they are a different race, they might think entirely different. Let's say you play as an angel. They are perfectn, right?
WRONG! They could possibly want to murder all evil or listen blindly to a master or they could be arrogant.

Well I wasn't talking about that kind of flaws . But of course for example, I didn't say that all of them have to be perfect. However, it also doesn't mean that if character A bullies B, then it doesn't mean B needs to have the same flaws or bully someone else. Maybe B is more "perfect" than A.
And I agree that the character shouldn't be showing from the start, but build up. Even though I'm a fan of Terminator-like characters that beat the **** out of noobs (of course, noobs, not "other masters" or whatever), The One or Neo-like characters (i dunno how to put it, from the Matrix).
There's also the question of parties. I'm not trying to be picking here but I think it lacks originality to have the same party made of fighters, mages, priest and rogue. It gets repetitive kinda easily
Then again, the kind of flaws were more like betrayal, and most of what a human might think. Suppose we make a cyborg army, or we make a RP about the Terminator universe --> isn't it totally unoriginal and ridiculous at the same time to make every human "flawed" and betray just "to have flaws"? Even more would be to make the machines do that (as we all know, they don't think like humans and never ever think about those things) unless re-programmed of course. It's totally unoriginal.
Whats so big about being human?

You know Death, the world doesn't center around your character, there are also other players who wish to enjoy the RPG
