I don't know if anyone's said this here before, but it's a pretty important point that came up.
Try to make sure that your player character's motivations don't conflict with your motivations as a player of the game. For example, When it's time to join forces toward a common goal, you want to be a part of the action and keep playing, but there rises a problem of: "My character wouldn't agree with this." That's when your own motivations as a player conlfict with your character. You might want to take this into consideration when making a character. If a situation like this does come up, don't be a hardass and hold everyone back. Be flexible and the game will survive to be played another day and everyone will have fun.
Also, this ties in with another good point. If you've ever done drama, you should know that when improvising or really doing anything at all, you need to always say yes. Accepting incoming suggestions and situations is the way forward, but if you just deny everything and keep saying no, you're dragging everything down.

Here is a big roleplaying tip. If you make a post or do something that your character shouldn't do..or even worse..couldn't do..and the Game Master has to undo it for whatever reason..remember one thing. The GM/DM has final say on what is possible and what is not. So if your character single handedly kills "Kros the ancient red dragon", and then "Kros the Ancient Red Dragon" attacks a village in a post by the GM later..you might want to talk to the GM/DM in private..because this means that he isn't going to let it stand that you killed Kros.
Sometimes it might just be an over site in the heat of the battle, but the runner of the game has final say..this also goes if two characters fight. Neither of those players get to decide who wins..the game master does.
