Logically. Imbalance completely breaks the plot.

what use is an enemy you can't defeat, to the story? It will only lead towards the destruction of your own party. And even if that enemy is destroyed, the credibility of the story will be contested.

@Dungeonmasters: Take good care of your threads. It's going to need long term dedication, but do your best. Do not add to the piles of dead RPGs that fell due to the author neglecting his/her duties.

Twice already have I been guilty of this...

Keep up interest with your active participation and stay in contact with the players. Keep track of the thread so you can keep the players on track too. Do not hesitate to interfere if there comes a debacle. Help new players to get into the game, educate them to best of your abilities.

I'm sure there are many more things to do, but those are a few basic things.

To add to the above.  Players, do not just drop out.  Please alert the person running the game that you will no longer be able to participate.  That way they are not sitting waiting for a post that never comes.  A lot of good threads die because people dropped it without warning.

Also, don't graduate from law school.  The need for escapism dies when you realize there's a big, beautiful world out there.  That and having tons of time to catch up on gaming.

Also don't bite off more than you can chew.  At most, I recommend only working on/writing one RPG.  It gets to be tedious and time consuming to maintain multiple characters and stories.

*cough* someone needs to read this.
Quote:

All Powerful (or close to it) Player Characters. If the character you are playing can't be beaten, hurt, or whatever..I just don't understand why play it at all.  If there is nothing that threatens him/her/it then playing is boring.  Time to retire that one and move on.

And to add my two cents on this. This mainly goes to powergaming.
An example:
" In the deepest chamber of the crypt Vaishvilk found an altar with a small long chest on it. Inside of it, the legendary wraith blade, the fabled Wolf's Wraith rested. Vaishvilk drawn out his blade. It seemed that the blade buzzed with joy as he was drawn closer to the wraith blade. He placed his sword in the chest. The blades started merging with each other, forming the fabled weapon of the Lycus Kings- The Lycan Fury. Vaishvilk picked up the blade, feeling the new power flowing within him."- Chronicles of Vaishvilk, Saga 5, chapter 4.
This was an example taken from the novel I'm writing. While in a novel a powerfull hero is as usual as elves or dwarwes(either you continue reading, or burn the book and murder the author), but in any RP in which a powergamer is present, this kind of post would be answered similiar to this:
"Margid went to the forge where his enslaved smiths and sorcerers were crafting the ultimate blade. As he touched it, he felt the godlike power within it"

It sucks then. The RP gets two morons with mystical weapons, getting more powerfull with each post.

Another tip(I don't know if it's been posted, didn't bothered to read the whole thread) :
If you're evolving your char, try to make it slow and interesting to read. Things such as "Pete siphoned the power flowing from the elemental stones. When he was finished he could incinerate the whole continent with a fingersnap" doesnt work. It sucks and pisses off the fellow players. IMO, the evolvution of char's emotions, views, skills and everything else must be posted in at least 10 long posts. Covering both his/her successes and failures.

This is more a tip for DM's/GM's.  If you have some characters that are doing their own thing..and it is GOOD..don't botch it by interfearing.  Unless they are doing the powergaming thing, then feel free.  Yeah, you want to get them all on the path that you have worked so hard on, but remember that they have free will.  Big difference between a Roleplaying game and a Story.  Don't FORCE the characters back where you want them, although you can give hints and dangle a carrot or two .

A refresher course in Roleplaying.

1) If you don't play good with others..focus on one on one gaming..not group gaming.  Other players want to enjoy things also.  If your character can defeat all of them while yawning one on one (or the whole batch of them) time to find a game where your character is the ONLY character.

2) Don't try to outpower game each other.  One character gets more powerful, then the other, then the other, and soon there are two gods battling out while the rest of the group plays go fish.

3) If you do break the above two rules and get smacked down by the GM, remember it is your fault..not theirs.

5) If you need to ask what happend to 4), you just don't get it

Its that time kiddies, gather round.  Today our story is about assumptions.  When in a world crafted by another, do not assume anything.  Remember that the world is fictional, and doesn't even have to abide by the laws of physics if the creator does not wish it to.  Houses could be pyramids who's base is the normal 'tip' of the pyramid, there can be 103 suns blazing in the sky, and yes..pigs might be able to fly.  So..if you are going to make a post about the conditions around you..ask the person who made the world first if it works.

Remember also that even though it is odd to you, it probably wouldn't be to the character.  So if you come upon a waterfall that flows UP, you might be "No way", but your character would be "Yawn, seen that a million times." hehe.

Um, oops?

And oh dear, this might not bode well for some certain people... Those of us who pray physics continues to work, that is.

Also, a note to people who run games, Try to avoid directly controlling your "Underling's" (The other RPer's) reactions to certain situations. Make it so that they are more disposed to do the thing that you want them to, but leave them room for improvisation. Sure, it might take longer, but it makes things more fun over all. (You can also message them if they avoid what you want them to do for too long, and at least warn them before you auto their character)

This differs from GM to GM. Just talk with your GM, what's okay (because some GMs allow others to world-build with them) and what's not, whether they would like to proofread a post, etc. TBH, I don't understand dictatorial GMs at all, because if you've got a pre-set story in your mind, you better just write it yourself. The characters you create yourself are that much better that way, too.

I suggest every DM to frequently communicate with the players and to create a certain group for the rpg. It helps against leavers, disappointment and the RPG damning itself by taking the wrong turn.
