Heroes 5 phylogenetics
Let's make a thread to discuss the Phylogenetics (i.e. the relation of the Classes and Races to each other) in Heroes 5. Please notice that this is total
geek area, so no flaming just because the topic does not interest you.
Feel free to debate this division!
Classes vs. Races
I think in order to get an understanding of the creatures, we need to recognize different layers of creature classifications, which I will label Classes
(overall level) and Races (specific level). In some cases it may even be relevant to divide further into Subraces or deviate races and group races in Groups,
a level between Class and Race.
Creature classes in Heroes 5
Off hand, I see the following groups of creatures:
Humanoids
Aberrations
Undead
Demons
Animals
Magical Beasts
Dragons?
Angels?
(Animates)
(Elemental)
(Spirits)
Some of these creatures are not very well described in the game - for instance, it's unclear wether the Dragons are to be considered a species within Magical Beasts, or a class for themselves. The same goes for Angels, which will be discussed below.
Below is how I would suggest to divide the creatures in the game.
Humanoids
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Highly to moderately intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
- Able to specialize, i.e. perform different traits in society.
- Form social colonies.
- "Human"-like, hence the name.
- Not an artificial race, i.e. deviated from other creatures.
Humanoids include
- Humans
- Elves
- Sylvan Elves
- 'Dark' Elves [deviate race]
- Dwarfs
- Nagas
The inclusion of the first three of these races is pretty simple. I include the Nagas here also, as the Heroes Mythology mention the Naga as the last of the "ancient races", as I think it's phraised. We have not yet seen the Naga in the game, obviously.
Aberrations (aka. Beastmen)
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Moderately intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
- Able to specialize, i.e. perform different traits in society.
- Form social colonies.
- A mixture of a Humanoid creature and some other species.
- An artificial race, i.e. deviated from other creatures.
Aberrations include
- The Orc Group
- Orcs (created from Humans infused with Demon blood)
- Shamana [subrace?] (created from Humans infused with Succubi blood OR simply female Orcs?)
- Goblins (created from Humans infused with Imp? blood - origin uncertain)
- * Gremlins (see below)
- Centaurs (created from Humans(?) infused with Hell Horse blood)
- Cyclops (created from Humans(?) infused with Devil(?) blood - origin uncertain)
- Gremlins [deviate race] (magically transformed Goblins)
- Minotaurs (created by Wizards merging Humans and Bulls)
Undead
This Class is special in the sense that it consist of creatures created from creatures belonging to the other groups after their death:
- Moderately to mildly intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
- Dead and re-animated.
- Immunity to mind control and morale effects.
- Second generation, i.e. had a life in one of the other classes before their current state.
Undead include
- The Post-humanoid group (created from Humanoid nature depending on their sentient state)
- Skeletons (created from primitive Humanoids and Aberrations)
- Zombies (created from sturdy Humanoids and Aberrations)
- Vampires (created from advanced and specialized Humanoids and Aberrations)
- Death Knights [subspecies] (outcast Vampire lords)
- Liches (created from magic using Humanoids)
- Mummies (nature uncertain)
- Undead Cyclops (created from dead Cyclops)
- The Spirit group (also to be considered as Spirits as per below)
- Ghosts (created from unsentient Magical Beasts and Animals as well as primitive Spirits)
- Wights (created from sentient Magical Beasts and Spirits)
- Dragons (created from Dragons)
Demons
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Native to the Infernal plane.
- Unsentient to highly intelligent
Demons include
- The Demon group
- Imps
- Demons
- Succubi
- Pit Fiends
- The Inferno-bestial group
- Hell Hounds
- Hell Horses
- Devils
Animals
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Unsient and uncultured, don't form structured societies.
- Natural beings.
- Don't posses magical powers.
- Can be tamed to lesser or larger degree.
Animals include
- Horses
- Wolfs
- Bears
- Mammoths
- Rams
- Elephants
- Lizards (Grims)
Magical Beasts
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Moderately to mildly intelligent.
- Animal-like, but with magical or supernatural powers.
- Don't form structured societies, don't specialize.
- Can choose to ally with Humanoids.
Magical Beasts include
- Griffins
- Unicorns
- Treants
- Hydras
- Wyverns
- Manticores
- Phoenii
Dragonchildren
The ranking of these creatures as a Class of themselves may be a bit controversal. An alternative would be ranking this as a Group within the Magical Beasts.
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Highly intelligent.
- "Children" of the elemental Dragon Gods, i.e. has a divine relation.
- Social structure uncertain.
- Strong affinity to Magical powers.
Dragonchildren include
- The Dragon group
- Chromatic Dragons [Water?] (Red Dragons, Black Dragons, Shadow Dragons)
- Mineral Dragons [Earth] (Emerald Dragons (including "Green" Dragons), Crystal Dragons)
- Metallic Dragons [Air?] (not yet represented on Ashan)
- * Elemental Dragons [Fire] [also belong to the Elemental Class] (Fire Dragons, Magma Dragons, Lava Dragons)
- Angels [Light]
- Faceless [Darkness] (extinct from Ashan?)
The inclusion of the Angels (and Faceless) to this group may seem odd, but makes sense in the mythological sense that Angels were the Children of Elrath (The Dragon Of Light). However, the mythology is not quite consisten here, Angels and Faceless are actualyl ranked among the original races with the Humanoids, although grouping as such (Humanoids) would seem unatural.
Furthermore, there is a slight inconsistency in the fact that Faceless are related to the Dragon Of Darkness, which would also have seemed to be the natural alignment of the Chromatic Dragons (Shadow Dragon!, Black Dragon). I tentatively suggest aligning the Chromatic Dragons with the Dragon of Water, as this naturally completes the set of real Dragons with the 4 Elemental Dragons, but as the Nagas (who are devoted to the Dragon of Water) never made the game as a faction, we don't know whether actual speciae of Aquatic Dragons exist. As of yet, this subject seems somewhat unresolved.
Animates
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Animated from inanimate matter either through mechanics or magic.
- Insentient objects.
Animates include
- Golems (mechanical)
- *Gargoyles [also Elemental, see below] (animated)
- *Titans [also Spirits] (nature uncertain, part mechanical, animated and summoned spirit)
This Class obviously holds the role of trashcan of creatures that don't really fit the bill anywhere else. That being said, it does fit the theme of Academy excellently, although one could have wished for a bit more concistency in the nature of these creatures from Nival's side.
Spirits
This Class includes races characterized by the following traits:
- Spirits from either the material plane, the elemental planes or the outer planes.
- In case of outer-planar beings, summoned to and bound to the material plane through magic.
- In case of Elemental creatures, often strong elemental affinities and immunities.
- Various magical and mind-related abilities depending on native plane.
Spirits include
- The Elemental group
- Air Elementals
- Water Elementals
- Fire Elementals
- Earth Elementals
- Elemental Dragons [also Dragonchildren, see above] (Fire Dragons, Magma Dragon, Lava Dragons)
- Gargoyles [also Animates, see above]
- * The Undead group [see undead]
- Ghosts
- Wights
- The Outer Planar(?) group
- Djinns (apparantly originats in Elemental plain, but are not Elemental in nature)
- Rakshasa (from the borderareas of the material plane)
- *Titans [also Animates] (nature uncertain, part mechanical, animated and summoned spirit)
- Sprites (forest spirits from material plane)
This class is pretty vague in its division, spanning a number of quite different creature groups.
I think I have thus accounted for all creatures currently known in the world of Ashan. Feel free to debate this and question the divisions I've made!

Quote: Titans: Made from soul of animating wizard
I think appropriately labeling the Titan is difficult. As the description says:
Colossi are the most powerful creatures that can be built or summoned by the Wizards. They are created using the same basic method as golems, but on a much larger scale. Each Colossus also hosts a figment of the soul of his creator.
Hence, I label the Titans as part Animate and part Spirit (i.e. magically infused with spirit). However, as it is not a spirit summoned from the other world, but rather a part of the Wizard's own spirit, quistion is wether it would be more true to simply label it pure Animate.
Quote: Death Knights: Outcast Vampires.
I was not aware of that. Death Knights are now labeled as Subspecies to Vampires.

My view on Heroes 5 Races
Interesting thread Alc
Let's start with the Races (or Classes if you prefer):
Human
Elf
Dark Elf
Dwarf
Goblinoid
Orc
Dragon
Animal
Celestial
Fiend
Fiendish Animal
Fey
Giant
Magical Creature
Elemental
Construct
Undead Mindless
Undead Human
Undead Spirit
Undead Dragon
Undead Animal
Notice that I packed a lot of creatures in the Animal class. That's because the fact that Griffins don't exist in the real world doesn't mean they are not normal "animals" in the world of Ashan. The Magical Creature category contains only Rakshasas, Djinns and Phoenixes.
Race/Class properties:
Human, Elf, Dark Elf, Dwarf:
- Highly to moderately intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
- Able to specialize, i.e. perform different traits in society.
- Form social colonies.
Goblinoid, Orc:
- Moderately intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
- Able to specialize, i.e. perform different traits in society.
- Form social colonies.
- A mixture of a Humanoid creature and some other species (in case of Orcs a fiendish creature).
- An artificial race, i.e. deviated from other creatures.
Dragon:
- Highly intelligent.
- Social structure uncertain.
- Strong affinity to Magical powers.
Animal:
- Unsient and uncultured, don't form structured societies.
- Natural beings.
- Don't posses magical powers.
- Can be tamed to lesser or larger degree.
Celestial:
- Highly intelligent.
- Social structure uncertain.
- Strong affinity to Magical powers.
- GOOD.
Fiend:
- Native to the Infernal plane.
- Highly intelligent.
- EVIL.
Fiendish Animal:
- Native to the Infernal plane.
- Unsient and uncultured, don't form structured societies.
- Don't posses magical powers.
- Can be tamed to lesser or larger degree.
- EVIL.
Fey:
- Highly intelligent.
- Various magical abilities.
- Live in the Nature around Trees.
- GOOD.
Giant:
- Moderately intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
- Able to specialize, i.e. perform different traits in society.
- Form social colonies.
Magical Creature:
- Moderately to mildly intelligent.
- Animal-like, but with magical or supernatural powers.
- Don't form structured societies, don't specialize.
- Can choose to ally with Humanoids.
Elemental:
- Strong elemental affinities and immunities.
- Some are insentient objects (Gargoyles)
Construct:
- Animated from inanimate matter either through mechanics or magic.
- Insentient objects.
Undead Mindless:
- No intelligence.
- Humanoids raised through Necromancy.
Undead Human:
- Humans that cheated death and granted immortality.
- Highly to moderately intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
- Able to specialize, i.e. perform different traits in society.
- Form social colonies.
Undead Spirit:
- Disturbed Spirits with Necromancy.
- Moderately intelligent, including ability to communite in formal language.
Undead Dragon:
- Dragons raised with Necromancy.
- Highly intelligent.
- Social structure uncertain.
Undead Animal:
- Animals raised with Necromancy.
- Unsient and uncultured, don't form structured societies.
- Don't posses magical powers.
- Can be tamed to lesser or larger degree.
Now, based on the above categories, here's how I would classify the creatures in Heroes 5.

My opinion.
Yes i copy pasted your post because i didnt bother writing up all creature names.
Classes: Humanoids, Animal, Spirit, Insectivorous Plant, Mutated Humanoid, Celestial/Avatar , Elemental, Construct, Hybrid, Fiend, Mutated Animal, Undead, Mindless, Soul Creature ( Sub-group of Undead), Conjured
Humanoids = Any creature that is intelligent and natural.
Animals = ...
Spirit = Allies of nature
Insectivorous Plant = Just like in real life, but Treants are bigger.
Mutated Humanoid = Any humanoid that has been mutated in some way.
Celestial/Avatar = Children of Gods
Elemental = A creature that is a part of the elements.

Also im quite sure i read somewhere that Dwarves were the wardens/guardians of Sheogh or something
And that Urgash was set in a prison in Ashans core.
