No, e4 is incorrect. White has a lot of mate threats but black can defend all. In fact, e4 doesn't change the position very dramatically. So that's a waiting move. But white can't afford such a move

nope, it wasn't
The mate in four, for example:
1. h5 h6 + ; d8 g5
2. h6 d6 + ; e8 e5
3. d6 d2 + ; e6 e3
4. d2 x e3 ++
black can use a few countermoves here but it all ends in four moves anyway.

Well, you must be right, I won't search for the potential mistakes in it, I'm a bit tired to do so
But what's mate in 2?

So educate me.
What does black do after e2-e4?
If he doesn't eat the pawn there's a knight mate. If he does eat the pawn then the other pawn eats the rook and there's a discovered mate.
So waht does he do?

1. e2 e3+ ; e8 x e3
2. g1 e3+ ; f4 x e3
EDIT: oh, sorry, you mentioned e2 e4, not e2 e3 lol

As I said previously, e4 is nothing but waiting. All black needs to do is to wait as white did. He does so with a pawn move: c3. All of white's mates are defended.

But white can do c1-e2++ if black doesn't take the pawn.

Interesting. I'll check it later, but i got to go now. Doom, if you want, you may look after it. There must be an error in it, because it's not the correct answer

sure, I'll check it.
Mate in three:
1. c7 x e8
now if 1... f8 x e8, 2. h5 e5 ++ so it's not the best move
if 1. ... (any move), 2. e8 f6 which leads to unavoidable mate in third move by the queen.
I still can't see a proper mate in two, though.

Joonas: Check this out:
1. e2 e4 ; d8 g5
2. c1 e2 + ; f4 e5
3. ...
See? that's not a mate in two.
Another mate in three discovered by me:
1. h4 h6+ ; d8 g5
2. h2 h4+; f4 e5
3. h2 e4 ++

See. This is why I'm the amateur. I can't see the bigger picture.
But that move destroys almost every mate try. Maybe you just found the key to this one. Maybe I'm useful after all.

sure you are.
I'm not even certain there is a mate in two here possible unless black plays stupid..
Further analysis: There is no mate in two. :-X

I'm slowly coming to the same conclusion but I'm not going to give up just yet.
I have my dinner rest for this before going jogging. Not that I will find anything, probably.

I don't think you will because it's not possible, there is no such move. I decided to check it once-and-for-all and set up such a position in CM11, then asked for advice.. the best move the AI was able to perform was a check in three. So there is no check in two.
First time I had to double-check my guessing, though.

That's pretty well. Maybe Keldorn messed up somewhere? Or there's a bug in the CM? Strange.

well It's not possible for a machine to miss a mate in two, if its possible. The mate in two can occur only after a silly move of the black, and a good puzzle shouldn't be solvable only if the enemy performs a bad move..
