So the basic idea is that there is an interdimensional battleground called "the Nexus" and people from all kinds of different dimensions go there to fight with their pokémon espers familiars Battle Avatars just for the heck of it?
K, I guess thats cool.
Here's my character and his Battle Avatar:
Name: Johnny Jay Star
Occupation: "Enlightened" hippie/meditation teacher
Background: Johnny Jay Star is a hippie, who meditates alot (light use of drugs involved (Disclaimer: Winners don't do drugs!) ) and has found what he thinks to be true enlightenment and an existence of a permanent mellow feeling. When he is on a trip to the Nexus he truly thinks that he is "totally tripping out man" and he thinks that his Battle Avatar is just his imaginary friend.
Description: Very colorful clothing that you would imagine that The Beatles would have worn during their drug period. His hair is groomed to an afro and he is wearing a headband and round,polarised sunglasses all the time.
Name: Mr. Fluffers.
Element: Air.
Symbol: F, for (acid) Fantasy.
Form: a Sentient pink cloud with a mellowly smiling face. 
Size: Gigantic, big enough to see from hundreds of miles away.
I hope this character isn't too whack  .

wait, I'm confused...
Isn't the nexus just a collective term for the road that connects the planes?
Or is it also an arena-like spot which you have to pass through each and every time just to get to some place?
Or is it a road at all?
EDIT: I just realised i am the only guy who has actual full flight capabilities

How I imagined the Nexus:
The Nexus is built up by different arenas, each and every arena has two portals, one leading back and one leading closer to the middle.
To get to the middle, you'll have to fight your way through a high number of arenas, or realms, as I'd like to call it.
I'm a bit confused here too actually...
Are the arenas realms such as the characters' homeworlds? Only that it's the homeworld of other beasts/people? Or are the arenas simply a complex of challenges created to keep people from reaching the center?
I hope it's the latter.

Uhmm... is it possible for a character to die permanently in here? (I can only imagine the answer to be yes, but i can still ask.)
EDIT: because of post limit reasons, I'll respond to ash's below post here. It's possible that a BA can't die, just beat up really, really bad with all the abilities reset and a penalty or something... It's just hard for me to believe that someone can be kicked out the rp for completely arbitrary reasons.
EDIT2: I knew they were corridors!

Of course, you'd need to pass through several worlds in order to reach the center of the Nexus, but that doesn't mean all those worlds can't have their own civilizations etc...

I hope you're right
I'm guessing that people from outside the Nexus are the only ones who actually want to reach the center... since it would be extremly easy for a person from a realm close to the center to get there, or maybe they're under some sort of restriction...

Who says a realm can be close to the center?
The Nexus isn't a physical thing. It's not exactly material. Maybe a same portal will take two different persons in two different places. Maybe not. Each world can have thousands of possible entrances and exits. When someone who has traveled a long way reaches a portal, it will take him to a different place than it would someone who is just starting from that world.
Space and time are rather distorted there... I think

Oh for crying out loud people!
Check M.E.G.A. and Gladerion and you see the Nexus.
It is there in both of them and it is EVERYTHING!

Well, the Nexus isn't that important in Gladerion, primarily because the protagonists are selfish sociopaths who could care less about important things.
