Battle Avatars - RPG IC

Well here is where the actual characters posts go.

The Arena
Right in the middle of the Nexus is a place of tremendous power.  Before time began for half of the dimensions, it was ancient beyond belief.  Tremendous power lurked within its walls, as well as terrible danger.  Beasts both fair and foul lurked, just waiting..for what only time will tell.  The path to the center of the Arena is perilous, and only the powerful and determined survive.  Even then, they must face a mysterious foe for dominence of the Arena.  Should they prevail, power and glory await.  Should they fail, nobody will even find their remains.

Countless worlds connect to the outter rings of the arena.  All entrants start there.  It is ever changing, depending on which worlds connect to it at the time.  Further in things are more stable, but even the inner recesses change from time to time.  Only the Center remains unchanged, unwaivering, eternal...

"So Kenji... same as always huh?" Harus sighed and seated himself next to the mechanical servant.

"Yes Master, same as always."

"You're always just repeating things, someday I'll make you smarter..."

"Yes Master, I'd like that."

Harus sighed again and walked up to a panel in the center of the room.

"You know Kenji, your blade will get rusty if we don't find any jobs soon, Edernia's been awfully quiet for a while. Maybe the government's finally won huh?"

"Maybe." Kenji unsheathed his blade and studied it, a short process in his AI told him it was still flawless. The whole process took about 10 seconds.

"Kenji, let's get the hell out of here. This world is pissing me off." Harus pressed a button on the panel and a door opened.

"Are we going to the Nexus?" Kenji asked. "That place is illegal, we'll be imprisoned..."

"Shut up and save your energy for later, we're going, now." Kenji went silent and walked out the door with his master. The city was quiet, as usual. No one seemed to noticed them as they walked along the streets. The only sound that could be heard was that of a message from the government that repeated itself every 5 minutes.

"Here it is, exited?" Harus smiled and glanced at his servant. There were 4 silver pillars joined together into a diamond shape, a green portal was flickering in the middle.

"I still think this is a bad idea Master. My AI's info does not involve realms outside Edernia, I cannot ensure that we'll...

Harus jumped into the portal.

The mechanical servant sighed. "Very well then."

_______________________________________________________

The portal flashed as Kenji appeared next to Harus, his Master was just staring at the enviroment.

"Master...? Is something wrong?"

"Look at it Kenji... it's magnificent!" Kenji joined his Master.

The area was a beautiful paradise, a reflection of their homerealm, Edernia's past. Of course, Kenji and Harus had no memory of this, as it was 5000 years ago, before the industry took their world.

"This area is dangerous Master, I suggest we go back to Edernia."

"Kenji... from now on you'll keep quiet about that place... it's nothing to me." Harus walked up to a nearby pond and touched the water with his fingertips, he quickly pulled his hand back as small circles were formed. "Interesting."

"Master, something's wrong. Everything's... green and warm, my sensors feel off. I may have a malfunction."

"No, it's perfectly natural Kenji, be calm, I feel the same way."

"No really Master, something's wrong!" A shadow lowered upon Kenji's back, seemed as if the dangers of the realm had found them.

(OoC: Let me know if something's off or needs to be changed, first RP you know... )

Two ceremonial guards with long, crimson capes and portable gatling rifles over their backs stepped aside. The huge brass door opened revealing a windowless, round chamber adorned with pillars, tapisseries, various portraits and a wide, mastefully crafted ebony table in its center. Twelve gray-haired men in custom tailored clothing of highest quality were sitting in comfortable, antique chairs around the table, various drinks in crystal glasses in front of each. A huge chandelier loomed over them, its countless lightbulbs bathing the scene in yellowish light.

"Come in, mister Harlequin," one of them said in an elderly voice.

And Harlequin stepped in. His cylinder in his hand, wearing a well-tailored Victorian gentleman suit, his long hair tidily engulfing the edges of his head without falling across his face, his moustache and goatee neatly surrounding his thin lips, as he removed his dark sunglasses and said:

"You had need of me, Your Highnesses?"

"Indeed," one of the chairmen said. "Have a seat. May we offer you a drink? A glass of gin, perhaps?"

"I highly doubt that's the reason I have been summoned, sir," Harlequin replied respectably. "But then again, I recon I could use a sip."

As he was seated, he was handed a glass of clear liquid by a butler who stood silently in the corner until that moment.
Gently taking a sip from the glass, he cut straight to the point:

"I suppose that this is about the increase in rebel activities? If I'm informed correctly, they have been getting better arms lately, using our own technology against us."

"Yes and no," the old man said. "They are certainly a problem, but we are unsure of the connection between your assignment and that unfortunate set of events. We hope that you shall find out as you go. Your main task is to find out the whereabouts of Alokin Alset."

"The scientist?"

"The one. If it were not for him, we would all probably still be sitting in candlelight. Without him and his ideas, we are weakened, and the rebels strengthen themselves every day. We fear that they might have gotten to him. That is what we need you to discover."

"Certainly," Harlequin said, taking another sip of gin. Then he seemed to remember something. "If memory serves me well, Alset has been mentally unstable lately?"

"Indeed. Rumour has it that, in the last year or so, he has been obsessed with a theory of a net of worlds, tunnels through space and time... Senseless gibberish, but we hoped it was just a strange phase of his mind. He was always an eccentric."

"Very well. Where shall I start my search?" Harlequin inquired.

"The best starting place would be his manor in the Silver Avenue, at the south-east part of the city. We do hope you will hurry and get this assignment done as soon as possible, mr. Harlequin. Should you fail, we would all feel the consequences, and they would surely not be pleasant."

Harlequin finished his gin and smiled. "Nothing to fear, sir. Alright, Your Highnesses," he added, standing up, "I'd like to get on the assignment immediately, so if that would be all, I must beg your leave now."

"Certainly. Good luck, mr. Harlequin. Oh, and one more thing..."

Harlequin turned around. "Yes, Your Highness?"

"If, for any reason, it turns out that the rebels have indeed gotten to mr. Alset, and you find yourself unable to retrieve him... Well, it is in our best interests that, if we cannot have him, no one can, if you understand what we are saying."

Without a word or apparent emotion, Harlequin barely nodded and walked out through the brass door. His footsteps echoed down the silent hallway as he put his sunglasses and cylinder back on and exited the inner sanctum of the Imperial Parliament building.

Two shadows walked through possibly the longest corridor imagineable. One figure was rather short, probably because it was hunched over, the other was very tall and proud, both were cloaked.

"Master,..."

"Yes?" replied the short man

"We have been walking around this domain for 20 years, now, digging tunnels, exploring kingdoms and connecting them. When you drew me out my domain I was given a promise of power. Do you plan on keeping it?" The great man said.

"My dearest Xaphan, you need not worry over this. I agree that I am not the most powerful one in this plane and that my time is nearing. In fact, you have probably been tempted by the archmagi in the the other poleis, but I assure you that, although they are powerful, they know nothing. We have been digging here for years and uncovered many secrets. I saved you from the darkest depths of the abbysal realm."

"Only because of my strength!" The demon interrupted.

"Yes, and because of your intelligence. Never forget that you are a smart demon. Now... where was I, Oh, yes! Those archmagi might seem powerful, but their power wanes in time and their knowledge will prevent them from ever improving. Your power is universal and my knowledge too. You see? There is no power like ours!"

"What's preventing me from seeking this knowledge myself, if I am immortal?" Xaphan interrupted.

"You're not immortal, nor am I or any other creature. No matter where you are, you will die one day as long as you can find a place where time progresses. You see, I can get us to a place where immortality is in our reach, along with power. Forget this rock! We could rule every world with a magical core!" The man exclaimed. His voice was filled with excitement.

"What's with magic?" the demon asked. he was very curious.

"See," the man said. "Every world that exists can be connected through something called the nexus and I have learned how to create a link between them, thanks to my studies and extensive research."

"And what purpose serves this?" The demon inquired.

"Ugh, in the center of all these roads to other roads to other roads, there is a battle dome, called the arena. Inside this monstrosity, there is the place where we can bend time and space to our own desires." the old man said as if he was explaning simple math.

The demon nodded and followed the old man through the corridors. "My friend, they will marvel at your beauty. They will fear your power and worship your every step, but you must realise that everyone, even you, needs an ally." The old man continued.

Suddenly he stopped. The demon did as well. The old man pointed at the wall of the tunnel. "This is the first step in our journey." he said. The demon roared, filled with joy. Nevil placed his hand on the wall and recited a few words. A great hole appeared in the middle of the wall. The demon was satisfied and made a step towards it. "u-uh! Age before beauty!" The old man said and stepped in first. Onwards, to another realm, cloing in on "the arena".

Dusk…
The world of Urankh’ hasn’t seen dusk for approximately five centuries and a half now…
The three stars dominating the planet are almost perfectly aligned, leaving half of the planet in darkness, exactly the half less populated and mostly filled with a giant ocean.
One scientist, whom the people had known as disappeared was finally about to end his research on an ancient structure that seem to be a gate, situated on an isle in that vast ocean. His name was unknown but he liked his servant to call him “Coshma’”.
And that isle was about to be perfectly aligned with the three stars.
“I think we’re finally done.”, whispered him to his servant, a radiant silhouette that escaped through the gate during one of his previous experiments, whom he used to call Djenn.
“Indeed.”
Coshma’ knew from Djenn that the gate would teleport them to a place called “Nexus”, a place that connected multiple dimensions, but yet an extremely dangerous place.
“I think it will open any tim…”
A sudden flash from the inside of what seemed to be a vortex announced the perfect alignment of the three stars.
“I guess this is it.”, said the scientist before passing through the gate, closely followed by Djenn, and these were Coshma’’s  last words on his native plain.

After what seemed to be a long dreamless sleep, Coshma’ woke up on what seemed to be the same dark island he left, the only light being his servant.
“Djenn, is this..”
“Welcome to the Nexus.”
After hearing this from Djenn, Coshma’ decided to take a better look but his eyes could not spot details in the surroundings, just the light radiated by Djenn, simply because darkness was almost inexistent in his native world. But he could spot a detail: the sky was starless, in fact, there was no sky, but just a giant stone ceiling.
“Master, there’s no time to spare, we’d better get going.”
“Of course…”
Just after Coshma’ raised from the cold floor, a strange sharp projectile wiped his forehead, leaving him a deep flesh wound just above his left eye.

"You may enter" said a powerful archmage dressed elegantly, with many precious stones and the like, sitting on a throne in a large round room, with many Orbs and other magical devices.

The door opened and a black robed man entered. His skin was black as an onyx stone, and he walked slowly to the center of the room. The archmage recognized him, and was surprised by the color of the skin: "Well, well, Mordekai. It seems you have returned. Now, can you tell me what's with the weird color of your skin?"

"Remember that you sent me to bring you the Infernal Orb from the Temple of Hecatieus? Well, I did find it. But by a simple touch, it melted into my body, and changed the color of my skin to what you see now. But above all else, it granted me ancient dark powers, long forgotten by even the most learned mages like you.", Mordekai replied.

The Archmage, surprised: "I can't say I'm not disappointed by these events, now I will never be able to analyze that Orb. I'm gonna send you to bring me another important relic..."

"Actually, "master", I would like to show you a new little trick I received from that Orb." - after saying these words, Mordekai starts moving his hands in a strange pattern, most probably casting a spell. After 5 seconds he stops, and the ground starts shaking.

"What is this?" says the Archmage surprised.

Mordekai remains silent, and the ground is starting to shake harder each second.

"Stop this NOW!" says the Archmage after some ten seconds of quakes.

"No, I will no longer obey you. In fact, I'm planning to take over all your artifacts and collections you have here." - just after Mordekai finished this sentence, a big portal made of flames appeared in the room, and a 9 feet tall ArchDevil came out of it, after which the portal dispersed and the ground stopped shaking.

The archmage is completely stunned and shocked at what he sees: "This... this is..." - he remains completely speechless.

"Mephisto, bring this pathetic human a fast but painful death." - Mordekai orders the ArchDevil with a diabolical grin.

"As you desire, master." - Mephisto uses his evil Gaze on the archmage. He falls down on his knees, and starts to scream. After a short period of time, he starts to disintegrate until only small pieces of him remain scattered around.

Analyzing the archmage's scrolls, Mordekai finds one about a place called "The Nexus", a very strange and mysterious place. He is very interested in it and finds a spell in the same scroll that could summon a portal that leads there. There is a warning below the spell's incantations though: Note to self, the Nexus is a very dangerous place. I don't think the risks are worth the rewards, better stay out of it. Mordekai, perhaps over-confident about his new abilities from that Infernal Orb, doesn't seem to be impressed by the warning and starts casting the spell from the scroll. A strange portal appears before him.

"Mephisto, the Nexus is a dangerous place, so I need your powers to accompany me." - after these words, both Mephisto and Mordekai enter the portal and teleport themselves to another realm.

As the Sky's third sun falls night awakens the city of Mfron.
The villagers silently file out of their houses bearing candles. the crowd stops in front of an ornately decorated portal. the portal is the exit from Gibord and the passageway into the Nexus. Each year the cities of Gibord send various hunters to find and recover neptodium. The neptodium is the only thing keeping this waning plane in existence.
Navura is one of the few who was Chosen to complete this sacred task.
Accompanied by his siltga ((Thats what a battle avatar is known as on Gibord)) he plans to complete his task at any cost...

"one drink please" Navura asks the bartender.
as Navura is served his drink he see's a familiar figure.

he mutters under his breath
"Meina"

"why hello Navura i believe you remember me?"

"Meina i can't pay you back today"

"Why not?"

"I'm going to search for the neptodium tomorrow. I'm risking my life to support our city and all you want is the money!"

"yes but you remember the contract"

"Meina you know as well as i do that my vault is more than a day's travel from here."

"Yes i am aware of that but why didn't you pay me back before."

A bell rings and the bartender replies

"Navura it is time."

"Later Meina."

"You better have the money when you get back or I'll personally bury you"

"Yeah, yeah yeah"

Navura exits the tavern and walks to the podium. he makes his speech and then turns backwards and takes two steps forward... Into the Nexus

((Since it will take me a bit to master your character names, for now using your names.))

Adrius - As the shadow looms over you and your Battle Avatar you realize that there is somebody..or something coming into the room.  You hear a clank clank clank as an armored figure walks past you, not paying attention to either of you.  It appears to be some sort of metal man, but you see no controller.  You have stumbled apon a Battle Avatar that has lost it's controller.  They are very unstable and dangerous, having no will to control their actions.  It could turn and attack any minute.

Baklava ((No comment yet..looking forward to your next instalment))

DG - You and your 'demon' no more step into the Arena that you come face to face with a young girl and a rather..large bunny.  It is at least twice the size of your demon, and the girl half your size at most.  "Look bunny!  New toys to play with!" the girl squeals..you get the feeling she is not quite right in the head.

The 'bunny' leans in and tries to take a bite out of your avatar!

Eugen - ((Hmm like where this is going ))

Asheera - The portal entrance is empty, but immediately you sense danger.  There is no enemy in sight.  The room is large and stone.  It is approx 50' x 50' and made up of even sized bricks.  Roughly 10 per row, 10 rows.  One exit to the north.

Mam - Apon entering the Nexus you are in a steel room with no less the six exits.  However, there are 3 floating balls of energy zipping around the room rapidly.  Something tells you that letting them touch you or your BA would be folly.

Xaphan cunningly tried to dodge the bunny's attack. His wings appeared and he dove straight up in the air. He quickly returned trying to get his burning fists to do as much impact as possible.

Meanwhile, Nevil tried to talk to the girl: "Hey, there! listen, if your bunny doesn't play with my friend over here, I might give you a tasty treat!"

Nevil never was any good with children. He never would've figured that one would stand in his way on his quest to immortality. Especially with Xaphan's presence...

Xaphan landed again...

"Good..." Nevil said. He thought a bit before saying another word. Maybe he fund an ally, but this ally wouldn't be really very trustworthy, unles he had a big bag of candy in his hands...

He already noticed that his powers as a summoner were useles in this place. A promise of power wouldn't help either nor a...

That's it! A wry smile spread across Nevil's face as he looked at the girl who was seemingly getting impatient. "Let's play a game." he said. The girl's attention was focused on him. "It's called 'travel the nexus'. If you play this game nicely and we both travel across this place, you will forever be able to play with you furry friend." Nevil said, trying to mask the sinister tone in his voice. He was able to convince old fools in his old world, but reasoning was more effective with them.

Nevil realised that he was walking on thin ice, but he decided to try his luck anyway.

"And the first way to do this is showing me how you entered this place..."

In a room filled with lava lamps and some weird pink smoke in the air, a colorfully dressed up man said: "Mr. Fluffers man. I've been thinking," and a mellow voice answered "So have I J.J."

"What if there were like... Different dimensions beside our own and there was like this place that connects them all together man."

"Well I was thinking about something else, but you are right about the dimension thingie."

"I am?"

"Yeah man! I'll show you!" Said the mellow voice and then the entire world around the colorfully dressed man started spinning in psychedelic ways.

"Whoa! I'm totally tripping out man!"

When the spinning ended, the colorfully dressed man found himself standing somewhere with a gigantic mellowly smiling pink cloud next to him, but he couldn't really see where they were since his head was a bit spinny from the spinning and his sunglasses were pretty dark too.

"Where are we man?" asked the colorfully dressed man from the pink cloud. "We are in the Nexus. The place that connects the dimensions together."

"Well then lets wander off...... This way and spread peace across the lands," said the colorfully dressed up man and pointed in some random direction where they then wandered off to.

Mordekai was excited about going to the Nexus, but now after passing through the portal his confidence started to diminish. Although the room had no obvious dangers and only one exit, he sensed something is not right.

"Something is wrong here, Mephisto. I can feel it. Going through that exit would surely cause us problems."

Mordekai summoned a small piece of rock and threw it to the north. Just as it was about to exit the room, a powerful electricity sound was heard, and the rock was turned into dust.

"Hmm... interesting..." - After thinking some more about this, Mordekai figured out that some sort of puzzle must be with the bricks on the walls.

"Mephisto, I think these bricks might be our exit from here. I suggest you start touching them, but not physically, as there may be more traps! Use your Dark Nova ability instead."

Mephisto follows his master's suggestion and starts using the Dark Nova ability on some bricks. Mordekai was right: touching a brick with that ability resulted in the same sound that disintegrated the rock, coming from the brick.

"I was right! The one that touches a wrong brick has the same fate as those who would try to escape foolishly from this place by going through the north exit. Keep attacking more bricks with your ability, Mephisto, one of them has to be correct and let us out of here."

After a lot of attempts, the correct brick is touched, and the south wall starts to rotate, until a south exit is formed.

An evil grin spreads across Mordekai's face: "You have done well Mephisto. That is our exit from this place. If we continue like this we will reach the Arena, the place in the middle of the Nexus, and I shall get all the power it has to offer." - again Mordekai is over-confident about his and Mephisto's abilities, without knowing that the Nexus has far worse dangers than this.

Right after they both passed the south "gate", the wall rotated back to its original state. Mordekai sensed a grave danger and felt uneasy again...

"Yes very. If the rumours are true we will easily conquer the nexus. With my magic skills and your fighting skills."

"Yes but they say that the Nexus is very hard to find. And that it is filled with monsters."

"As I told you i have created a portal that will lead us there."

They walked into a big room that was empty but a big and strange door in the middle. The Door was made out of pure gold.

"Ah the portal is almost finished Sepiroth. I will just add the finishing touches."

Asteroth used his magic powers on the door. It gave of a green glow before opening and revieling an empty room.

"Shall we?"

"Maybe I better go first master."

And then Sephiroth raised his sword to protect himself before he walked into the door. The moment after his master arrived.

"It is empty master. It is just a big corridor."

But as soon as he had finished the sentence something landed infront of them in the ame moment as the portal behind them closed.

“Master!”

But Coshma’ was already unconscious.

Djenn watched his master for a moment, then focused on the direction where the projectile came from, just to see another one heading straight at his chest. With a quick reaction, Djenn managed to partially activate his resistance ability and ignore a part of the damage from what seemed to be… a dark extremely sharp crystal, that shattered once it hit Djenn’s armor.

But where did those crystals come from? Who was throwing them?

Approaching to what seemed to be a wall of this cave they were into, Djenn realized that it was completely made of this strange crystal, which didn’t reflect light, but seemed to absorb it,  leaving the battle avatar without his usual radiant aura.

But there was no time for observing, all of a sudden another crystal shattered hitting Djenn’s armor, this time tossing him back some ten feet into the dark wall.

“Djenn!”
He was hearing someone calling him like from inside his head.
“Djenn, wake up!”
Then a sharp sound of crystals smashing each other.
When he finally opened his eyes he saw Coshma’ dodging a rain of dark crystals.
“Master, behind me, fast!”
Coshma’ dodged another crystal before jumping behind his battle avatar.
Then a strange gold, calming light set up upon Djenn’s armor, one his master had never seen before.
He was using his resistance skill, protecting his master from the incoming rain of crystals.

“Now make sure you stay there!”
But just after assuring his master that they’re safe, another crystal hit the Battle Avatar’s armor, weakening the strange light that covered Djenn.
“Light absorbing crystals, haven’t seen those in a while…”
“Wait, that means your skills are useless near them?”
*Another crystal narrowly misses the two*
“Seemingly, yes.”
“I think that means we’d better hurry and defeat the damn…”
Just before finishing what he had to say a gigantic robot with one drill arm and a cannon one showed up in front of them.
“…thing…”
*Another crystal launched by the cannon hits the Battle Avatar’s armor, before the robot changing his attack tactic to a melee one*

“No, you’re not shredding me to pieces with that giant drill!”
“I think that’s exactly what he intends…”
*Djenn, slowly reacting, doesn’t manage to avoid the giant drill that blows off his right sword and injures his hand*
“ARGHHHH!”
*The robot prepares for a final blow…*

Harus and Kenji stayed perfectly still as the armoured thing walked past them. It ignored them completely...

"Kenji, kick that thing's ass."

"Master... we don't know anything about this thing."

"Sure we do, this is the Nexus after all, there are naturally obstacles to keep us from reaching the center. Now, don't tell me you don't think that looks like a guardian." Harus said and pointed at the stranger's back. "Now obliterate it so we can move on."

"As you command..." Kenji held his palms close to eachother and formed a dark sphere between them. The air vibrated as the sphere got darker and smaller.

"Good." Harus grinned, this shouldn't take too long.

A short but sharp sound pierced the silence as Kenji fired the sphere against the stranger's back.

"nice to be away from it all. just you and me little buddy"

"SCRRRCKKKK"

"Now lets find out where we are."

Novaran skitters around the room deftly dodging the energy bombs balls.

"Novaran be careful those could probably overload your circuits"

"SCKKKCKKRKRKRK"

"Hmmm you may be able to dodge them but i cannot"

"Novaran try short circuiting them with a few puffs of steam"

DG - "Silly Mr. Toy.  Bunny and I always been here, always will be!" suddenly some flying creature zips past and the girl's eyes focus on it.  "OOOOO a flying toy!  After it Bunny!" and the rabbit is gone in two bounds...quick as anything you have ever seen...leaving a giant hole in one of the walls like it was made of tissue paper.

Asheera hears a crashing sound and a shriek as something comes up from the floor.  Looks like some sort of insect with large mandibles.  A small man with goggles is ridding on its back.  "Oh ho! Another notch on my belt!" the creature snaps at your avatar just barely missing.

Kek - You come to another room in the Arena.  It has 3 other doors.  One right accross, and one on each side.  On both sides of all the doors is two rather daunting stone statues of gargoyles.

Eugen ((sure you havn't done this before?  I love it so far ))

Adrius - the attack hits the creature and ... bounces off harmlessly.  The creature turns slowly, and you see two eerie red lights.  You hear a mechanical voice.  "Inititiating defense mode, delete combatant."  It starts coming toward you slowly.  Before it can reach you a enormous tiger being ridden by a feline female slams into it.

"Fly FOOL!" she yells to you. "This is one of the center's strongest champions!  You can not hope to even scratch it yet!" Sure enough the thing is standing again even after recieving such a bone crunching blow.  It seems not to even have a scratch.  It has focused on your would be rescuer, who has turned her Avatar and is outrunning it.  You doubt it will ever be able to catch her.

Mam - the steam doesn't even slow them down.  However, it does let you see their path..and realize that their is a patern..even if a long one.

The dusk settled as the roofless steam automobile stopped in front of the large manor in the southeastern part of the city. Its panting noises ceased and its door opened. Harlequin checked both his custom-made revolvers again and made sure that the daggers in his boots were hidden well. Then he took his umbrella and pulled its handle - a lengthy blade came out from the center of the umbrella's mechanism and the steel sword flashed before Harlequin's eyes. He smiled and put the sword back into what represented the mechanical part of the umbrella.

He loved his umbrella.

Finally, he got out of the vehicle and walked toward the house's door. It looked deserted - the lights were out and there was no sign of any servants maintaining it. Alset was a loner, he never liked maids and butlers roaming around his house while he was working. That's why the manor itself looked a bit older than it actually was.
Feeling no apparent need to knock, Harlequin opened the front door. It wasn't locked, people from the Parliament have already come to check if he was here, some two or three days ago.

The floor screeched eerily as he walked in. It wasn't nightfall yet, but the darkness was settling steadily outside, covering the building in shadows.

He remembered how afraid of the dark he was when he was a child.

A child?
Was he a child once?
He couldn't remember. He got severe amnesia since he became an orphan – since his father cracked and shot Harlequin's mother and then himself. He couldn't even remember that, either – they told him about that horrible event only a few years after he was found and saved by a minister of the Parliament. He was too small to understand it before that, he supposed. All that he could remember now were the occasional childhood fears, all of which were now gone, replaced by the one, ultimate, fear of the past.

He shook off the thoughts and concentrated on the assignment.

He tried to turn on the lights but nothing happened. The lightbulbs burnt out, apparently. Either that or the wires had lost contact. He'd have to hurry then, lest he had to work in candlelight.

Entering the bedroom, he acknowledged no signs of struggle. Nothing of interest.

Then he visited the kitchen. Everything was in order. Kitchen knives and other requisites all were in their place. There was a bit of that special kind of chaos which seemed to scream that there's no woman in the house, but it generally seemed alright. Not even too alright, just... natural.

The library was cold and dusty, with giant bookshelves looming over it. Some spiders ran around, nervous about a human disturbing their slumber and going through their nets, as Harlequin pulled every suspicious-looking book in hopes of finding a secret entrance.
Still nothing. Strange. He could've sworn that the house looked disproportional from the outside compared to the inside. There had to be something...

Finally, he entered the living room. It was quite simple - an old sofa, a table, a fireplace made of red bricks (all equal enough), some portraits (regular walls behind all of them)...
Wait...
His gaze went back to the fireplace. It was completely clean. One would expect it to, well, at least have some remains of burnt wood or charcoal. Instead, it had two more or less equal, unused, fresh wooden logs. He approached them and touched one gently with his umbrella. It rolled down, revealing what would, to an untrained eye, seem like just one more, ordinary, random log. Harlequin, however, noticed that it was fixed in a strange angle. He bent down and pulled it, and the wall behind him screeched. Turning around, he saw a passageway to a hidden room.

Harlequin allowed himself to let out a victorious "ha".

Descending carefully down the stairs, one of his pistols in his hand, he tried to see through the blackness that was surrounding him. After a while, his eyes got used to it a bit more, and he could see the shape of a door in front of him. They screeched as he slowly opened them, and glanced into the room. It was rather large, with stone walls, and he could easily recognize it to be a laboratory. Half-seeing, half-touching his way through the darkness, he evaded some of the more dangerous-looking shapes. Then a clicking sound was heard, as he, seemingly, accidentally pushed some button with his umbrella – and a large, metal coil burst into electrical flames, bathing the room in purple light.

The Alset Coil... Certainly a strange invention, Harlequin thought as he examined it. He remembered something similar from one of his books on physics, which he used back at the university. It was a type of resonant transformer, generating high-voltage electricity. Harlequin has only seen this on an illustration in that book, but it was rather recognizable. And much more interesting when you saw it live.

His eyes moved toward the table beside it. Several instruments glittered in the dancing lights, as well as a few dusty books, some lab dishes and a sound device called a Phonograph - that miracle of modern technology, used to record and play various sounds. There was a record in it, and Harlequin played it. The voice trembled from excitement.

"Seventh day of the fifteenth month. Extremely close to a breakthrough. I found the right frequence and enough amounts of Nexus energy, and put together a net of coils that form a passable transition between worlds. The portal has opened and is fully functional. The Nexus-powered automaton is still unstable - steam and electric overdrives are present; I shall not risk taking it with me. I'll take all the risks myself. This is the fulfillment of my dreams, all that I have worked for... all these years... The portal closes as soon as an object passes through it, thus it is a question whether I shall ever be able to return. If I do not, be it by my own will or inability to do so, I shall have no regrets. So long."
The record stopped.

Nexus? What on Earth is he talking about? What were those whirling noises in the background? Has the man finally gone completely insane? Perhaps he killed himself? Questions buzzed through Harlequin’s mind like wasps...

There was one more curious thing laying on the table - a glove. A single, but rather large gauntlet-like object, with various hardware stuck on to it - including what seemed a small generator that shined with bluish light. Didn't look like electricity, or anything he remembered from his studies. He remembered Alset muttering about Nexus energy. Interesting.

He took it and carefully put it on. And suddenly, the shadow behind him wasn't a shadow anymore. He turned and jumped back - it was a large, humanoid, steam robot. It stood still, but glowed with the same awkward bluish light that radiated from the glove.
Slowly, guessing that a mistake might cost him his life, Harlequin started moving his fingers. The robot started moving. Left. Right. Forward. Backward. Raised a strange, cannon-like thing he had instead of an arm. Put it down quickly.
After several minutes of experimenting, Harlequin realized - it had nothing to do with fingers. The trick was in focusing the energy. Like in some of the oriental martial arts... Focus the energy from your hands, and direct your thoughts - Harlequin said to himself. Nice and easy. Come on. That's it. That must've been the Nexus-powered automated thing that Alset was talking about. A military project? Then how come the government didn't know anything about it?
Or perhaps they didn't tell him?
Intriguing. He'll inquire about it later. Right now, it was a good feeling to have an 8 foot tall robot by his side.

"Why hello there, mister Gray," he said and smiled.

Then his mind went back to the task. He remembered the talk about the portal and the coils. He sought out all the levers, all the buttons available, and turned them all on. By that time, the room was glowing like the heart of the Sun. But the light was not blinding, he could see very clearly through it.
And the center of the chamber started to flicker. Whirling noises, such as those heard on the tape, filled the laboratory and an unnatural wind almost blew off Harlequin's cylinder.
Almost.

Finally, in what seemed a matter of a second, a large, glowing, purple-bluish circle appeared. On the other side, azure tunnels could be seen. Blurry objects passing by, floating across the view.
It was unlike anything that world had ever seen.
It was… magnificent.

Harlequin, completely mesmerised, took a deep breath and directed the robot to follow. He made sure his cylinder fits well, closed his eyes and walked through the portal.

"Hmmmm... This room is giving me some bad vibes man," said the colorfully dressed man to the gigantic pink cloud and the pink cloud answered: "Indeed." "Do you think we should split up man?" Asked the colorfully dressed up man. "Why should we split up when I can split up by myself?" Answered the cloud and split into two and then the two pieces of the cloud splitted up as well. "Thats pretty cool... I guess you should go and see whats beyond the hallways, but please don't leave me alone in here... The bad vibes make me nervous."

Three of the four parts of the pink cloud go to the 3 doors and one part stays with the man...
