Welcome aboard, that's the right attitude  You should find some people willing to play around though the tournament of honour doesn't have many opponents playing for ratings. Some people here play the duel map, a map designed for instantly upgrading hero, buying armies, earning spells, getting arties and fighting the final battle without having to spend a few hours.
Either way I'd written a few things about online play here. Stick around and you'll learn more.

Edit: Ah, it appears the downloadable version of tribes of the east cannot be patched T_T. I guess i have to get the retail version.

So here is the latest version of the map. Keep in mind that this is not a conventional map, I have edited a good amount of units and spells so the game plays quite different. Reason was of course balance, to be able to use the weaker upgrades and avoid banning spells. Also a number of weak abilities has been boosted such as corrupted soil and banshee wail.
Some of the more interesting changes:
Warmachine hp boosted, a fully trained ballista has 1400 hp.
Bash probability factor 1.2 from 1.5.
Life drain 0.7 from 0.5.
Stormwind gives 20% init penalty and -1 speed from 20%, -2 respectively.
Torpor factor reduced to 2 from 3, duration 1 turn from 2. Both of those mean that the vampire lords are back in the game
Forest rage +3 init instead of 5, savage treants were too fast.
Call storm 3% ranged reduction, 15 damage from of 1% and 10 respectively.
Elemental gargoyle vulnerability 35% instead of 50% to prevent imbalances.
Ride by attack 0.5 instead of 0.25.
Familiar and vermin mana eater nerfed.
Banshee wail +50% dmg.
Arcanes archers reduce enemy defense by 40% from 50%.
Warding arrows factor 1.5 from 1, also master hunters have +1 init.
Lava dragons have boosted liquid breath.
Some spellcasters rebalanced, for instance stone spikes from elders have +1 to mastery, water elementals as well.
Some spells have been reworked.
Haste/slow affect initiative by 15-20-25% from 20-30-40%.
Mass buffs/curses now give 3-5-8 instead of 6-9-12.
Divine vengeance has been nerfed.
Likewise for word of light and curse of netherworld.
Armageddon remains as it is except there is no phoenix cape to boost it. In fact there are no elemental arties other than bearhide wraps and dwarven smithy hammer which are ok.

this actually makes me wonder, is there any interest left anyway?
ive been thinking if i should try dueling with HC people and all but now with heroes 6 so close, not much activity seems to be left in dueling unless it's all "underground"(meaning friends playing each other) stuff
