The Tale of the Aegae
Before any Mortal Being roamed the World of Ashan, the only life formes were the Two Primordial Dragons: Asha, the Radiant Dragon of Light, Bringer of Life, Mother of the Moon, The Silent One, Adversairy of Urgash; and Urgash, the Blazing Dragon of Doom, Bringer of Death, Father of Sun, the Evil One, Adversairy of Asha. Six Children came from this remarkable couple:

- Sylanna: The Green Dragon of Earth, Bringer of Fertility, Mother Earth, The Patient One, Adversairy of Sylath.
- Arkath: The Red Dragon of Fire, Bringer of Elation, Keeper of the Hearth, The Valiant One, Adversairy of Shalyssa
- Elrath: The Gold Dragon of Light, Bringer of Faith, Judge of Right, The Pure One, Adversairy of Malassa
- Malassa: The Black Dragon of Darkness, Bringer of Might, Mistress of the Underworld, the Ellusive One, Adversairy of Elrath - Sylath: The Silver Dragon of Air, Bringer of Fortune, Father Sky, The Merry One, Adversairy of Sylanna
- Shalyssa: The Blue Dragon of Water, Bringer of Wisdom, Keeper of Secrets, the Knowing One, Adversairy of Arkath.

As the Wisest and wittiest of All Heavenly Dragons, Shallyssa was given the Honour of being the First to create a Mortal Race, One that would roam Ashan, revere their Dragon and Entertain all the others. She created the Proud Aegaean Race, A Draconic Species, similar to the Heavenly Dragons themselves.

The Aegae are a strong and proud Serpentine race, as physically diverse as Humans and as wise as Elven. Subspecies include the imfamous Nagae, which represent the Warrior chaste in Aegaean Society and the Reserved Sylagae, the oldest and wisest of All Aegaean Races. After their creation by Shalyssa, they settled themselves in the Vale of Heresh, where they lived peacefully for centuries, untill the greedy Human race drove them out and took the Vale for their own.

It were the Sylagae, who were created by Shalyssa, as the first Mortal Beings ever to roam Ashan. Tolerant by Nature, the Sylaga's faith in Shalyssa was a lot looser (and thus: weaker) as with the other Primal Mortals. Instead of devoting themselves to worship, they devoted themselves to learn and know; in other words become enlightenemt. Shalyssa, who is also the Goddess of Wisdom, permitted her trusted Adepts to persue this road, with success. The First recorded events, dating back from 1500 BSD, were of Sylagan origin. The Sylagae invted their own specific Alphabet, which is still used in Aegaean cities and in very important documents. The Sylagae's own method of research differs greatly from that of the Modern Wizards; Instead of Striving to Know as much as possible, the Sylagae study only the nessecairy and Powerfull. There simply isn't enough time to tinker with Elements and Blood Specimen. (complete and utter waste of time). Sylagae are learned and fearsome Magicians, but this comes at a cost. The biggest downside to all this researching and Learning, is the lack of Devotion they gave to Shalyssa. Eventhough they  had her blessing, they gave her a lack of attention... and that would cost them their role as Primal Aegaean race.

In the meantime, the Western Humans has adopted Elrath and (partially) neglected Sylath. The Sylagae's lack of Faith made them an excellent replacement for those over-proud and self-righteous fools... Two decades later, the Sylagae had adopted Sylath, angering Shalyssa.

Shalyssa retalialated by creating a race similar to the Sylagae... a Species more Fierce.. more Fearsome... at as wise as the Sylagae... A race currently known as the Nagae. The Nagae looked Exactly like the Sylagae, except for three minor differences: Firstly, the Nagae has Four Arms, in contrast to the Sylagae's two. Secondly, the Nagae are completelty covered in scales, even with their faces, which the Sylagae were scaled waist-down only. The scales were also a lot sharper that the Sylaga's, resembing more those of a Lizard or a Dragon. Finally, The Nagae are a lot more robust and taller than the Sylagae, being about 8 feet long (against the Sylaga's "tiny" 5 Foot and a half) and 3 feet broad (against the Slender Sylagae's two feet of broadness). With Shalyssa's influence being bigger than Sylath's, the Naga soon became the Superior Aegaean race (from the moment on, the term Aegae was used for both Sylagae and Nagae, coming from Ae (sea) and Ga (Serpent)). The Coming of the Nagae completely changed Aegaean society (see below), but also made the Faction stronger overall. Usually, the Sylagae had to both Provide Scholars and Soldiers to protect the Temples from harm. Now, each sub-race had it's own responsibility: Sylagae became Expert Scholars and mages, Mastering both the Skies and the Oceans, with help from former and current patron Deity. They invented the art of "Invocation" which allowed Sylagan Sorcerers to Imbue their attacks (whether physical and magical) with Powerfull Destructive Magic (originally Lightning, but they also learned to invoke other elements later). Two centuries later, in 366 BSD, They learned to master another powerfull being: the Temptest, a Sentient Storm, created out of both Shalyssa's and Sylath's knowledge. A Tempest can take any form and be of any element... butthose who are caught in it will soon stop to live.

The Nagae on the other hand were, as the dominant and hereditairy Sub-species, the main Defender of the Aegaean homes (who at that time still populated the Coastlines in the desert). They became Fierce, Elitist Warriors, only to be matched in strength and Valor by the Mighty Dragon Knights. Although weaker scholars than the Sylagae, they too did some discoveries, which would prove to be vital for the Aegaean Race. They invented the so-called Aquapoli, Cities that Float on the Water. Using Powerfull wards, the Nagae Sorcerers are able to make cities float on the water, allowing them to move. Soon after this, the Nagae build the first Aegaean Capitol: Karthas. Soon afterwards, the Aegae started to created flooding cities en masse, to bind themselves to Shalyssa eternally, as a maritime race.

In 235 BSD the Vale of Heresh, the  Aegaean home country, is invaded by the Human Raven Duchy. The Aegaean Land cities, beacons of Knowledge, are burned to the ground and the half-finished Floating Cities are sunk by the Raven Warships. The remainder of the Aegaean Forces flee to Irollan where King Falorel grants them amnesty, creating one of the most Solid Alliances Ashan has ever seen. The Admiral of Karthas had managed to sail the floating wreck of Kathas to Irollan where it was repaired by Nagan Engineers.

Soon afterwards the Aegae decided to Forsake living on Land completely, and restarted building it's floating Cities. Around the time of the Revelation of Sar-Elam the Aegaeans were completely Maritime.

Although the Aegae had a deep hatred for the Humans, due to their invasion of the Vale, they formed an alliance with a Human organization; The Dragon Knighthood, a Martial Order that strived to protect Ashan from the Demon Scourge. The Sylagan Oracle, Alyssa the Legendairy, identified the Dragon Knights as genuine and honourable, like the Aegae saw themselves.

The Aegae granted the Dragon Knights information about the Ashan races and all that happened, and in return, the Dragon Knights initiated them in the arts of Asha's Magic (Summoning) and gave them access to their finest materials to help the building their floating Temples and Pyramids.

Then the Third Eclypse began; The Dragon Knight Bastion of Stonehelm was burned to the ground; the remainder of their Forces shrouded themselves in anonymousity - The Aegae, their largest allies knew that they survived the Eclypse, and decided to leave the twisted world of Ashan, both to keep the secret and because they didn't care about the fate of most other races (with the mild exception of the Elves).

Queen Ypsodet the Voyager led her Aegaean brethren to the West... and no one knows what happened to them from that moment on...

The year is 990YSD, and Half-Elven Scout have spotted The Pyramid-like outline of the Aegaean Stronghold on the Western Horizon... They have returned... but why?

Timeline

Aegaean Society
Aegaean Society can be best described as a mix of the Indian-Hindu Chaste System and the Egyptian Pharaohs. One God-like Dynasty rules the whole faction without much ado, a faction which is divided in different Chastes.

Apart from the Royal Dynasty, the highest Chaste in Aegaean Society is the Warrior Chaste. The Warrior Chaste represents, logically, the Aegaean Militiary Officers and Army Leaders. This Chaste is almost entirely Dominated by Nagae, but some Sylaga have managed to reach this Chaste as well. The Warrior Chaste's taks is to lead the troops, keep the order and defend the Temple. How they do it is not important, as long as they do it (Aegae are Lawfull Neutral, which means they will devote themselves to reach their goals, not caring about the side-effects). The Chaste is under Direct controll of the King or Queen

The Second Highest Chaste is the Philosopher Chaste, which completely consists of Sylagae. Nagae never showed interest in becoming scholars, as they are a lot more Physically strong than mentally. The Philosopher Chaste represents the Sylagan Scholars, Priests, Sages, Diplomats and Sorcerers. The Chaste's Task is to lead Religious Rites, sacrefice to the gods, Master the Divine Magiks, invent handy trinkets and tools that will aid the Aegae in their life and Wars and conduct Diplomatic Missions. Usually, the non-Aega who tries to enter Aegaean Society, will only see this chaste. The Philosophers are the Portal to the Outside world, the worlds beyond the Templar Society. The Philosophers do not have to answer directly to the Nagan King/Queen, but to the Aegaean Religious Leader: the Oracle, a Sylagan Seer who is able to predict the Future and dictate the will of Shalyssa. This Oracle has no official Power, but in practice, it's a pillar of Aegaean Politics. More about that will be revealed later...

The Third Chaste is the Middle Class, which consists of the Rich Nagae and Sylagae. This class has, unlike the former two no real leader, nor any global function like Protecting the Homeland or Leading Religous Ceremonies. Instead, they are a chaste independant to most others and form the backbone of Society. This Chaste virtually lives from Trade, being the most Commercial of all Chastes. Also, most Soldiers come from this Chaste. The Main Professions practiced by the Chaste are Merchant, Salesman, Teacher, Soldier, Junior Officer, Apprentice, Healer and Engineer

The Final and lowest Chaste is the Working Class, being a mix of both Sylagae and Nagae. This Chaste is the backbone of production; they forge weapons, construct buildings, manifacture War Machines, Tame the beasts of the Deep. They are the lowest of all Chaste, but the most important one. Without them, the Aegaeans would simply starve to death or wouldn't be able to defend their home. This Chaste is not seen by any Outsiders - The Aegae (including the ones belonging to this Chaste) see it's presence as natural and logical, and will not mention it.

Aegaean sub-races and allies

Sylaga:Sylagae are the oldests and wisest of all Aegaean Races. Soon after their creation by Shalyssa, the Sylagae started to research the secrets of the Dragon and their way of Life. It is said that the Wheel, Writing, Ale, Steel, Bricks, Explosive Powder, Baskets and Paper are Sylagan Inventions, though only Writing and Paper are confirmed by every Ashan Races as Sylagan inventions.
Sylagan are also the most Humanoid of all Aegaeans, being Human waist-up and Serpent Waist-Down. Due to their appearances they also function as the Temples main diplomats, as they are a lot less scary and scaly as the other Aegaeans.
The Sylagae's Frenzy research weakened their Faith in Shalyssa, and Sylath used this weakness in their faith to upsurp himself as the Prime Aegaean God. In Return Shalyssa created the Physically stronger Nagae, who soon took the Ruling Role from the Sylagae. From that moment on, the Sylagae are known as "Sylagae",  as they were only Aegaean race, they were simply known as "Aegae" before.
Sylagae are the Temple's Diplomats, Sages, Philosophers, Scientists, Priests, Seers and Mages, and are the Second Highest Chaste in Aegaean Society. Their (unofficial) Leader is the Oracle of Sylath, who can predict the Future. Sylaga means "Heavenly Serpent". Sylagae are Lawfull Neutral

Naga: Though Nagae were created rather late in the Ashan Timeline, they Soon because the dominant Aegaean Race in the Templar Society. Nagae aren't as intelligent nor as Wise as the Sylagae, having the intelligence of the average Human, but make that defect up with their Strength, Devotion and Trustworthyness. The Nagae are arguably the most devout and Honourable Race in the whole of Ashan, known for their Pride, Straight-Forwardness and No-Nonsense attittude. They however are rather unwise, even for Ashan standards, obeying their master with righteous devotion, even against their better Judgement (which always was rather low anyway). The Nagae are the Temple's Dominant Warrior Chaste; Their Main Function is to Protect the Floating Cities and Lead the Aegaean Forces to History. They are also rather gifted Bureaucrats, being able to move themselves through Administrative Procedures and Rules, like no other being would be able to, without breaking them.
Apart from their tasks as Soldiers and Bureaucrats, they also function as the Aegaean Engineers, having constructed most of the Aegaean Cities without the Use of Magic. The Nagae also tamed the Various Sea-creatures Serving the Aegaean Army (Turtles, Phookas, Snappers) and construct (and operate) the Immense Solar Towers on the Turtles' backs, as well as the Sacret Eastern Tower of the Coatls.
The Nagae themselves are Immense in Size, and look a lot less Humanoid than Humans; They have Four Arms and look rather Coralesque and Aquatic, like something that had been perpatually stuck on the Ocean's floor. Their Four flexible Arms wield any kind of Weapon and Tool with great Ease, allowing them to work faster than any other Ashan Race.
Naga means "Big Serpent." Most Nagae are Lawfull Neutral.

Shae: Shae or Merfolk aren't technically Aegae, since they have no real alliegance to Serpents. They usually are counted as Aegae for two reasons: First and Foremost, they too are created by Shalyssa, and secondly because they allied themselves with the Aegae when they sailed west. At the Time the Merfolk were having a Border Despute with the Sha'Quil Race, and saw the Serpentine Newcomers as welcome allies. The Aegae Accepted the Merfolk's proposal, thus creating a strong and enduring alliance. The Aegae would help the Merfolk fight the Sha'Quil, and in return the Merfolk would help their new Allies into building a new home. When the Aegae returned to Ashan, the Merfolk agreed to accompany them, granting their disputed lands to the Sha'Quil.
The Merfolk are seen as Pariahs into Aegaean Society. They do not fit in naturally, and have their own laws and customs, often contradicting with the Aegaean ones. The Aegae tolerate this, becuase of the alliance the two races have, even giving them an Own Name in Gasermo: Shae (Gliding Ones). Merfolk Society is strictly Matriachal; the Female Mermaids have a natural attraction around them, allowing them to bind and seduce any Humaniod like they have done before.
Merfolk come in many shapes an sizes. Some have fish tailes, other have legs, and others have both tail and legs. They usually have two legs without fish tail and are covered in blue-ish Fishscales. They don't have hair, but have coral-like algy growing from their head instead, which looks a lot like Human Hair. Thy wear clothes and Jewelry made of typical oceanic matherials: Corals, Algy, Shells, clams, pearls, Jellyfish, Driftwood and the like.  They wield Tridents. Their Standard Aligntement is Lawfull Evil.

Dranaga: Dranagae are half-Human, Half-Dragon, Celestial beings created by the Dragon's Themselves. Eventhough Dranagae don't have any alliegance to the Nagae or the Temple, they are seen as a species of Aega; they are, after all, a Humanoid-Serpentine Hybrid.
Dranagae are summoned by the Gods to protect their worshippers in Dire times of Need. They are exceptional fighters, even able to outfight most other creatures, including Black Dragons, Titans and Archangels. Dranagae look like large Humans with a Scaly, Palishly green skin, clad in Heavy armour. Their faces are always covered, and it is believed that their gaze can kill any creature instantly. The last thing was never proven though. Dranaga means "Big, Draconic Serpent" in Gasermo, the Draconic Language. All Dragana are Lawfull Good

Coatl: Coatls are avian serpents and are counted as Aegae, despite their lack of Humanoid Heritage. They can be best described as Winged Serpents. Coatls Originally dwelled on the cliffs West of Ashan and were tamed by the Nagae when the Aegae arrived. They are believed to be creations of Sylath.
The Coatl's Skin is covered in Scales for the most part, but partially in Jewels as well. This causes them to be able to reflect then Sunlight as it shines on them, creating scorching beams of Light. The Coatls were trained to controll this power, and currently serve the Aegae as a Shooting/Flying hybrid force. One species of Coatl, the Wadjet, which looks like a Cobra with Bat wings, doesn't have these Jeweled Scales. Instead, it is able to spit Venom over a great distance, due to their powerfull and long tongues.
The Origins on the Name "Coatl" isn't specified, but it's believed to be a name given to them by the Sha'Quil. Coatls usually tend to be of Neutral Good Aligntement

Foreign Relations

Haven: The greedy and powerhungry Lords of the Human duchies drove us from our former home! The Vale of Heresh was once our home, our sanctuary, and these swines took it, only to let it forsake as a Land of Acolytes of Death (Necromancers)! Bah! Curse these spineless and honourless beings! Our honour will soon be Avenged! [Hostile]

Necropolis: We know little of this "Cult of Asha" that populates the Land that once was Ours. That they are better lords than the Humans is not that difficult. What do we know about them, comes from our Dragon Knight allies; It is said that they use profane, twisted magiks to stay alive... even after death... We do not trust these... "Necromancers" at all... but al least we were told that their Leader - someone called Arantir - is benevolent and honourable, even to Dragon Knight standards... we'll see if we can trust them... if at all  [Neutral]

Academy: The Wizards have never been our friends. They have, just like  they self-righteous northern brothers (Haven) have a corrupting, unquenchable thirst for Power. They seem to learn as much as possible, learn and know and learn. The fools; don't they realise that Quanity cannot beat Quality. It doesn't matter how much you learn, the true thing that matters is what you learn. Depite their knowledge and Scholarship, the completely lack the true sign of Intelligence: Common Sence. They are erratic and selfish and will not follow us... unless we happen to have common interests [Neutral]

Inferno: Since our exodus we haven't had much contact with the Ashan races... but we still remember the Horrors of the Urgashspawn. These creeps are even worse that the Ducal Humans... they are unworthy of the miserble lifes the live. They have not even the slightest honour and crawl for their master like bugs or Street Dogs, and will roll over or play dead if ordered. Their only goal is to destroy Ashan, and we cannot tolerate this! [Hostile]

Dungeon: It is said that these... "Dark-Elves"... are renegade traitors from the Sylvan True-Elves of Irollan. The Elves have always been one of our best allies, equalling in Wisdom to our own Sylagan scholars.. Whe know little of these Fallen Elves.. it is said they are as intelligent and Wise as True Elves, but as power-hungry and opressant as the Average Human Duke. We will interact with them with the greatest caution... [Neutral]

Fortress: The Proud Dwarven race has never changed over the ages. They are benevolent brutes, who prefer to Hunt, Drink, Brawl and Sleep rather than learn and improve their standards... Foolish. yet charming. We know exactly what to expect of them and we are sure that they will help us achieve our goals. [Allied]

Stronghold: Another faction we know little about. There are two thins that completely disturb us about the Orcs; Firstly they are partially Demon, who are the worst creatures to roam the planet... and secondly, they are unnatural beings, created by those foolish Wizards of Al-Safir. We don't know how they'll react, but it seems best to attack and annihilate them before they can do us any harm. [Hostile]

Sylvan: Ah, our oldest and most powerfull Allies. We have always had good relations with them; They helped us in big times of need, by granting us amnesty when the Humans drove us from the Vale of Heresh. They are as wise and honourable as we are, and we'll gladly work together, like in old days... [Allied]

Wavestorming
Invokers cannot learn Luck. Instead, they have learned to controll the Waves and Tides. All Original Luck perks (except Soldier's Luck and Dead Man's Curse) have been redistributed amongst the other skills. (eg: Magic Resistance to Defence, Resourcefullness and Spoils of War to Logistics, etc) Soldier's Luck has been edited to fit with Wavestorming and is now a perk of the second level (called Seaman's Luck)

Hey Lexxan, if you're up to it, do you want to interweave my Dome faction with this faction in the campaign? I was planning to have the seaside gnomes and naga fight each other in the first half of my campaign (the gnomes were suppose to win eventually, but maybe we can work out some kind of comprimise )

Lol, that would be a good Idea, since I only had a vague idea about the campaign, but this would be a good reason to explain their return! ^^

A nice entry Lexxan, though I think that your Dragon Knights faction is superior. I have a few things to remark, for you to do with as you wish.
- Once again, your units seem to suffer an overkill amount of abilities. With many of them unexplained, so we may only guess to what they are supposed to do.
- Your units lack a description, though I believe this is due to the faction not being finished. (If this is true, then disregard this comment)
-Your faction lacks coherrence. Unlike your Dragon Knights which are bound together through a core of a religious order, these units seem like a muddled together band of sea-creatures. Though the core-race are the serpent-beings this is not reflected in your units. (I am known for my racial-purity standpoint, when creating factions)
-There are several inconsistencies with the History of Ashan which you seem to try to fit in. (Which I will list if you want me)
- Lastly and least importantly, your racerelations seem to lack funding. In my eyes you lack explaination why the Serpent-beings like or do not like certain factions. (I hope this will improve and this is slightly hypocritical, since I have not finished this myself yet.)

Good luck and have fun creating this faction.

I'll explain this in the "Taming the Deep" paragraph. But it's basically this: The Mermaid are not exactly Aegae, but they are allies and graduately joined their new ally's town. Turtles, Kelpies and Coalts are simply feral creature that were tamed by the Nagae. Snappers are created out of Wizard-like experiments by the Main Protagonist of the Temple's Storyline. Krakens are beasts from the Plane of Water, which are summoned trough Temptests and Whirlpools.

Please do.

This will edited, but it's clear that you do not understand the Aegaean Psyche - but I'll add that in the "Culture" Paragraph.

Ok here comes the list and I will list everything and anything I come across reading this. So do not be insulted, I am trying to help you fit in the History.

-First of all, the Dragon-god of Water is called Shalassa, not Shalyssa.

-Naga or Sylaga does not originate from latin, therefor the plural of it should not be Nagae of Sylagae. This can be explainable due to the original language of these people, but please state this if this is the case.

-Haven does not adopt Elrath as primary Deity until 48 YSD, therefore they cannot have forsaken Sylath a good 300 years earlier because the timeline explains that the Sylath-faith has to be forced out in 48. On top of that, many humans in the east (Stonehelm and such) still worship Sylath.

-Also it has been the Mortalls who chose their patron deity. You can read that here .nullMyth of Creation

-You have the Raven Duchy invade Heresh in 235 BSD. There are several inconsientcies there. First of all, the Human Kingdoms aren't united until 3 YSD, therefor the Raven Duchy would be a independant nation back then. Second of all, the Raven Duchy is located near the Borders of Ranaar, making it no sense to invade Heresh (as seen in this picture Duchies) because they would have to cross several other Human Kingdoms (Duchies) to get there. It would be far more logical for the Wolf or Falcon Kingdoms (Duchies) to invade Heresh. On top of that, Heresh has been haunted since unknown times, it seems strange that a pious species would like to live in haunted lands. The only reason the Necros live there is because it is haunted and they like it like that.

-Stonehelm has no connection to the Dragon Knights, it has always been an independant city-state.

- By 990 when the Agae return, I believe the events of DMoMM have already taken place. Therefor (regardless of outcome, because we do not know which one is considered cannon) Arantir is dead and cannot lead the Necros anymore.

- Al-Safir is the Academy capitol, not the name of their nation which is called the Silver League.

It is a shame this is unfinished.  You put a lot of work into your factions Lex.  I am impressed.
