Tell you something... if it weren't for Tolkien you wouldn't have Warcraft in the first place.  And likely not Might and Magic either

The best character of all is Gollum...

He is THE epitome of schizophrenia and greyness.
Boromir fell sadly...

And don't bring in any elves or orcs because they symbolise what's inherently good or inherently bad and even the inherently good things could be corrupted (Galadriel's mirror)

the book isn't about the struggle of good vs evil, because evil isn't protrayed on the forefront. It's the struggle of good versus themselves.

Faramir was the lesser o two sons in the eyes of his father who was a mad tyrant and Faramir sucked it up and stormed the fortress of death and his own demise to show he himself could be as powerful as boromir. Yet, against all that, faramir proved to be stronger than Boromir when he let Frodo go.

Gimli and Legolas don't count. They were comical relief.

Merrin and Pippin were the smallest of them all, yet they persuaded the ents who decided they could change nothing in the war. the most cynical were turned thanks to the death of nature.

no psychology? What?

Even Aragorn had to return to his land and become leader, after a life of exile. He had to take up the role of leadership, after the role of wanderer and after the role of sentinel.

The father of Arwen had to see all this happen again (humanity failed in his eyes, thanks to Isildur, a friend of his who betrayed him and he had to entrust this mission to Isildur's son).

Gamling was a knight who was forced to choose between his lord and his country.

Theoden was lied to and forced to make wrong decisions.

Have a sense of drama

It is psychology of a ten year old.

Look closely.

Frodo, colorless character which is just "brave". well, that's it.

Sam, "brave" and "faithful". Yeah, that's it.

Gandalf is just wise. Oh, he does get angry at times. What a complicated character.

Aragorn? So he is the king, just hiding. Wow. How complicated.

Orcs. They are all bad, stupid and dumb. ALL of them.

Elves. They are smart and awesome. All of them.

BORING. SHALLOW. MONOCHROMATIC.

Compare it with anything else, idk, Dragonlance, The Witcher, whatever. LOTR is crap.

I sort of like LoTR, at least the books are decent.

The movies however took away my favourite character in the whole book.

Tom Bombadil = Epic incarnate

I must however say that the story is rather shallow, I like it but it isn't enough to really catch my full attention....

it is written through the perspective of mortal human eyes, though, so there's a reason why magic is so strange and inexplicable in those books and there's a reason why the orcs are portrayed as violent monsters and elves like serene, distant creatures.

Turambar's story from the Silmarillion had a pretty good sense of ambiguity, especially for a fantasy novel from sixty years ago...

I wonder why LOTR is so over hyped, anyway. It's a decent book, with a detailed word and interesting narration, yes, but the story is boring and the characters suck. Epic, meet Shallow.

To say "it's because it's from mortal human's POV" is a poor excuse to me. So if I write a book about an primitive man, everything and everyone should be primitive and revolve around food and sex? Come on, it's stupid.

No, but you shouldn't be allowed to explain advanced physics in the POV of the primitive man. There's mystery in the story. If everything is explained in the fantasy novel, then why write a fantastic story? Fantasy is usually about magic, which should be inexplicable, because for the simple fact it's MAGIC.

If you write a novel from the ancient Roman era (POV Greek citizen), then you should explain lightning from Zeus.
if you write one from Fertile sickle, then you should explain disease as sin against JHWH and so on.

Frodo, colorless character which is just "brave". well, that's it. has to go on an adventure that he always dreamed of, yet he carries a burden greater than anyone else's. He finds someone who understands that burden in Gollum and that's why he took a liking to him along with the necessity of a guide.

Sam, "brave" and "faithful". Yeah, that's it. torn between the desire to protect himself and his master and the desire to obey his master and do what Gandalf told him. He makes the wrong choice at that moment. Sam also wanted to meet the elves, yet they aren't as great as he imagined them to be.

Gandalf is just wise. Oh, he does get angry at times. What a complicated character. sees his most respected colleague betray his own teachings and attempt to murder him.

Orcs. They are all bad, stupid and dumb. ALL of them, because they are all a step behind in their evolution. their hunched over walk makes them incapable of sapiens-like brain development. The areas were they live are wastelands and they are forced to fight eachother to stay alive and were forced to live lik that for generations to come. Also orcs aren't exactly a race in lotr...

They are made from minerals and magics created by Sauron, who later developped the technique to create Uruk-hai and shared it with Saruman to ge him on his side.

Elves. They are smart and awesome. All of them, through the eyes of the beholder and there aren't many left.

Seriously, who has greater imagination that Tolkien? Who has such writing ability? To have created so enthralling an epic-romance, with its own mythology, with such diversity of scene and character, such imaginative largess in invention and description, and such supernatural meaning underlying the wealth of incident is a most remarkable feat. To call it rubbish is somehow hard to understand. But to each his own

Yes, it is true that it doesn't revolve around action.. might be a reason why xerox doesn't fancy it a lot.. not mages throwing balls of fire at the enemies, in fact, magic is hardly seen in the book.
