Susan Boyle?
What do you think of Susan Boyle? What do you think of shows like Britain's got talent or American Idol?
Is she just experiencing 15 minutes of fame or will she make a career?
If you don't know what I'm talking about here's the clip:

Saw her on the news today. One of those fun "hey, that's a surprise" moments, but I expect the world will forget soon. Still, good for her that's still more fame than I'll ever get.

Well, kelly Clarkson and Natalia got a career more or less, but if you haven't got the looks, you'll lose eventually. Susan Boyle is awesome though

She didn't really have a good voice either. Had talent I guess.

Sometimes it's more important that your voice is unique than considered good by official music canons. I've never heard anyone with a remotely similar voice to Janis.
What matters in rock'n'roll is energy, and she had plenty of that.

*sniff*. That explains Aerosmith.
I mean I kinda get it. There opera singers with horrible voices that I like for other reasons.
But having energy doesn't mean much to me.
Edit: Could you give me an example of rock n'roll that doesn't have energy.
Edit2: Ow that Janis is really painful. Bullfrog.

She had an amazing voice, but... she'll be forgotten in a month, if not less.

Quote: Edit: Could you give me an example of rock n'roll that doesn't have energy.
That depends on what energy we're talking about. For example, according to my views, though Kiss was a great and fun band, it didn't have half the energy that Led Zeppelin had. Yet some of today's bands that declare themselves as rock don't have half the energy Kiss used to have.
With rock migrating more and more from quality to quantity, energy started to drop until it reached catatonia and lost 80% of the kids to rap, electronic music and MTV crap somewhere in the 90s.
Having energy may or may not mean much to an individual (that's a matter of taste), but it's a life-saving difference for a genre such as rock.

Looks like I'll have to roam around on youtube to make some sense of it.
Could bands today really be much worse? I think the difference is you hear all the crappy ones too, but from old stuff you just hear the best stuff.

There are a few out there that come to the top with true talent and messages. Their are two genres of artists: the message and the music. Some focus on the words of the songs, others focus on the songs for the words. Its the mediocrity of being neither that just gets to me. There are a few that lean to one side, and fewer that are great because they have both.
Susan Boyle is a good example to look to for prejudgment, but I don't think she is going to be a big hit with the younger crowd. Forties on will like here, as will the NeoClassical Opera connossieurs but, aside from that, she'll just be another diamond in the rough.

Interesting post Sith. Who would you say is an artist that has both talent and words?
I heard somewhere that Boyle already got a recording contract. Surprising isn't it?

@Phoenix
It's quite the opposite actually I hear only the most popular stuff from the new ones, and I'm trying to hear everything from the old stuff (discographies of Bob Marley, Carlos Santana, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, and a lot more). Of course, there are exceptions - such as Marilyn Manson or System of a Down, which belong to the newer stuff and I like them. But the general idea is that if newer rock/metal music is good, it's prevalently good cause of the lyrical, not musical value. And back then, it was about both.
Quote: Who would you say is an artist that has both talent and words?
Edith Piaf.
Robert Plant.
Serj Tankian.
Tried to name them from different periods for the sake of comparison.

Bak ok you interpreted it as deep into the popular ones. I meant you aren't listening to ones that were unpopular back in the day like Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Well your post was still good.
By the way I hate these kinds of shows where they make money off of making fun of people. Another such is 'Deal or no deal'.

She's got a unique quality to her voice, kind of a lower register timbre to it. There's no way of knowing, but I suspect that she sounds like the castrati used to.
It all depends on the songs and arrangements but yeah, I'd rather listen to her than most of the irritating juvie pop stars out there today....
