I once did a debate that 'Benevolent Dictatorship is preferable to Democracy', on the affirmative side.

Unfortunately it was more of a comedy debate and therefore absolutely none of the points made were actually valid

My moral compass is typically a lot stronger then most of the people I know.  However, if I ever got in office and somebody offered me a million dollars to vote to reinstate smoking (or similar) I would in a heartbeat.

@antipaladin: well of course it isn't that easy. Interesting note however, I would make separate independent advisors, possibly without knowing of each others' existence, and other tracking stuff. Chances would be lower, and they would be afraid of lying or hiding something, because you never know when the others can turn you up. (you know Stalin used to execute a lot of his advisors this way, but I would simply inspire fear, like punishment is law is supposed to).

Plus, every once in a while, I will randomly look into independent reports. Chances are, I can catch lying or corrupt advisors. (of course I wouldn't catch them all, but the THOUGHT that I do that will make them think twice before doing it, out of fear. Just human psychology).

The difference is, I wouldn't
Actually, I would try to get that million first in some way, or if I find a loophole in the contract. Remember, a dictator doesn't always follow the rules.

Well, political writers anyway, but still, I think it's mandatory reading in a lot of schools...

What horrible teacher would force his students to read a POLITICAL book? -.-
Maybe swedish kids are very spoiled (most likely) but I promise if that would happen in my school there would be a huge outrage xD

It's advanced level english literature, xerox, say that again in three years

And ALL good books have a message, George Orwell is just a bit more direct than modernists (I'd call him a realist by the way) or is a bit more respectable than romanticists.

I have a copy of Animal Farm in one of my drawers. And yes, it does tend to be mandatory reading in most schools, at some point.

Animal Farm is a brilliant read, particularly because it conveys imminent concerns in a simple manner, and simplicity is supreme. Still, I think he's somewhat (not a lot) overrated overall. 1984 was good but not suburb, as it skipped many of the historical (and to this day, reoccurring) ploys of big government, and Orwell unfortunately didn't take his own advice in real life. I'm not surprised that he wouldn't be as well known in some places though; he's mostly a star in W. Europe and the Americas.
