Carcity that is so ridiculous on so many levels mate. Where do you think the ice goes? Of course the whole level will rise. What you're saying is an increase of TWICE the level -- no one claimed that. If that's what you had in mind, that would swallow probably the ENTIRE Earth.

you misunderstood me, the amount of ice we have on this planet is not enough to raise the water level, maybe a little bit but not any noticeable difference.

"noticeable difference" in what? Water level as a whole? Sure. But if you mean that many land will become swallowed? Even %0.01 means a lot for that (just an arbitrary number btw ). The ocean is deep.

Your correct, 10-20 meters is not a lot. I don't think there is so many places that will be deep sea'd by this. [/sarcasme]

listen to me, the water level wont rise, it will stay at the same level because for the water level to rise of the ice melting requires the water to be full with ice AND there have to be ice above the surface, but that's not the case, there is alot more water than ice.

*facepalm
you're saying this AGAIN
Let me put this another way. If the ocean was full of ice + the current water level, the level of the water would be DOUBLE. That's DOUBLE man, that would probably swallow the entire freaking land. no one is claiming that, 20 meters is FAR, FAR from it: last I checked, oceans are much more deep than 20 meters, but I could be wrong of course.
If an ice block turns into 1 litre of water, the total volume of the ocean would be +1 litre more. Where do you think the extra volume would go? It would increase the water level (obviously by a very small amount, since 1 litre is dispersed over a HUUUUUGE amount of space the water occupies... )

the things is that the ice already is in the ocean for the most part, with the exception of greenaland's ice. if the ice cube sin your drink melt, the volume of your glass won't increase

This is high school textbook stuff Death. Ice has less density than water (hence it floats) which also means some of it protrudes out of the water. When it melts, it becomes more compact and the level stays the same. North Pole is just a bunch of frozen ice in water, and a good chunk of Antarctica is the same way.

Quote: well, I don't know much about global warming, but I know that if the temperature would rise, it would NOT affect the water level, and to prove it, I have done a little experiment.
If one have a bowl, and fill it up with rocks, and then with water so a little bit of the rocks is above the water surface, thn one has countries and water in a miniature scale, now if one where to add ice and put into the water, and the amount of ice would be in the same scale as the bowl of water and rocks (requires a little calculations but shouldn't be too hard), and then we wait for the ice to melt, when the ice has completely melted away, have the water level been affected? NO.
Why? Because for the water level to be affected be the ice when it melts, the ice has to fill the whole water AND a part above it, this very same experiment can be made with a glass and a little ice, put one small peice of ice in the glass and let it melt, nothing happens with the water level, fill the glass with ice and let melt, the water level is affected.
Conclusion: Melting ice will not affect the water level in the world.
This is correct, but only for sea ice (ice that is floating on water) such as in the Arctic.
However most of the world's ice is held on land, in Antarctica and Greenalnd.
This is the equivalent of having ice blocks outside of the bowl in your example, and melting them and pouring the water into the bowl.
There are many estimates as to how much the sea level would rise as a result of all the glacial ice melting, up to around 80 meters.

That's only if it floats on water, not if it reaches the land...
If the ice was totally or partly supported on the bottom of the vessel (or sea), then when it melts the water level will certainly rise. In the limit, if there was no water in the vessel at the start of the experiment, there clearly will be at the end, and it is obvious the water level has risen. This is a key problem resulting from global warming – melting ice that was covering land areas such as Antarctica and Greenland is adding to sea levels.

That's what I said.
Carcity is referring to sea ice, however, which is not Greenland or Antarctica, which is land ice.
Sea ice displaces the same amount of water as the equivalent of meltwater, therefore no net change in sea level.

you guys are right but, as TA pointed out, I was referring to the ice that is in the water, which, when melts, will not affect the water level. But the ice that so far isn't connected with the water level will affect the water level, although it is not affected in the same way from global warming, since it is the water, and not the ice that absorbs the heat from the suns rays, and therefore the ice in the water melts a lot faster than the ice on land.

Remember Antartica(?) is a continent, and actually I believe it's bigger than both Europe, Australia and maybe even South America, which means it's a whole lot of ice that can possible be laying up there.

On a positive note, global warming rocks for sea trade. Imagine a non-frozen sea lane above Russia to transverse. Awww yeah.

Your x-axis has been tamped with delibaretly to make the graph look nice.
Also, even if it hadn't, I don't see the proof, only an indication at most (though many would probably not even accept that).
