Rock versus Classical

Recently I just finished a project whereby I culled through my entire record collection to find the best music from each artist/composer.  If I was missing something from my collection and I could download it, I did so.  You can see the results here.  Each number represents the number of gigabytes that each musician took up on my hard-drive.

The Beatles would have rated higher if they'd let people buy their mp3's individually.  Alice in Chains surely would have rated higher too if they hadn't burned out so quickly.  The Pretenders and Ladytron seem a bit overrated, I think that's because they made a good quantity of good pop/rock, even if they weren't the same style of brilliant as Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin.

Here's the classic versus rock matchup

Pretenders greater than Beethoven?
hmmmmmmmmm

Yes!

btw, this is where I made the graphs.

I'm not sure I get it - just because you have more gigs does not necessarily mean it's better music? I have more gigs of Britney Spears on my pc than I have Bob Dylan, that does not mean I think Britney Spears makes better music than Bob Dylan does ...

In the battle of Rock Vs Classical, it depends on what mood I am in.  Mostly Rock wins, but sometimes...you just have to listen to Ride of the Valkyrie (spelling?).  Flight of the bumblebee can be so relaxing ...  and the unfinished 9th..epicness apon epicness.

The classical composers were absolutely brilliant.  They could make people feel strong emotions without a single word.  STRONG emotions.  Good music can do that, singing included or not.  It can make you laugh, it can make you cry..and love every minute of it.  So although I like more rock songs then I like classical songs, the quality of the classical music is..in my opinion...superior.

There have been some GREAT songs in rock and roll.  Songs that I absolutely love.  A few might even be called 'epic'.  None really have reached the lofty heights that the classical music I like is on.

So it is some quality/and vast quantity vs much higher quality (in my opinon)..and I honestly can't declare a winner.

You mean like Rock me Amadeus by Falco?

Yes both are awesome.  I would like to get my hands on some music that was considered Classical when composers like Amadeus were around....

Edit : For those who don't get it..the Rock me Amadeus thing was a joke.  If you need me to explain it, hcm me

To me classical music is a bit boring, and I don't like rock at all. The reason I said boring is because MOST of classical music isn't done by Bach or Beethoven or the like, it's just that people overlook the bad (boring) pieces and only remember the good ones like Bach, Mozart etc...

I only listen to soundtracks & pop, and the percentage (of memory used) would be like 97% soundtracks and 3% pop, and even then, the pop is usually not the crap you see from famous artists, especially the crap that they put out these days (usually it's because the pop is inspired from a soundtrack/movie so it has a similar theme, which is why I even have it in the first place).

The reason I find classical music a bit boring is that it's a bit too un-thematic and chaotic sometimes -- make no mistake, some soundtracks, especially by older pieces of Alan Silvestri or John Williams, are also in the similar style, which I find boring (but not annoying -- what I find annoying is rap & some types of metal). I like more the "thematic" approach which makes it interesting IMO, like how Silvestri has done in Beowulf, or Hans Zimmer, etc...

Sometimes I like heavy metal riffs in some action music, but overall, I don't like black metal or "growl" metal (is that death metal) at all, just a small mix of it.

why rock vs. ? You can also combien it in various ways, and its done often and good, in all kinds of rock, but clearly in the bit harder genre, f.e. metallica + orchestra, many metal bands do so, or do you know Jerry C's Canon Rock

Yes, although I have to point out, some pieces from HOMM are boring also (too repetitive), but it's similar "style". For example (this is posted really because I can easily find on YouTube )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBTIoL5vaOM

(if you want I can post more examples with very different styles so as to show that it's a wide style, to those who don't know what I'm talking about -- those who looked into the Epic Music OSM thread should know what I am talking about )

Apocalyptica is the purest example. Playing metal with classical instruments. Also Vanessa Mae has some good pieces.
This even goes further.
Symphonical version of Satyricon- Mother North. Played at Gjallahorn. Awesome. There are other fine examples as well.
About true classic like Bach, I can't tell you, no knowledge in this area. Sadly.

Classical music isn't about the instruments mind you, it's more like a style. And I also like some of Apocalyptica's pieces.
