Archery

Remember, that ranged units retaliate to ranged attacks.

But remember one more thing. If you expertise Combat, you get bonuses like: first strike, jousting bonus, no retaliation, double strike.

So most likely those things can be applied to the archery too. With basic archery you get bow and arrow and mere ability to shoot. And with every level of archery, the hero will get bonuses like double shoot, no range penalty, no wall penalty, and no retaliation from other archers. So what niteshade said is pretty right.

Well hello, I guess you are the same fellow from the other forum.

Anyways, I'm not so sure if no retaliation is something that can be applied to ranged attacks. Think about it, how could you prevent archers to retaliate you. In melee, this could be thought as dodging, but.. You get the picture.

Of course these are just my thoughts.

I'm not really sure if the modifiers from the melee skill will still help your archery. It doesn't seem quite logical. And for those who don't know, it was revealed that the top skill in Combat now improves your defence, and the other skills are melee, archery, and resistence. So toughness got changed to melee, and presumably combat now does what toughness would have done.

On the other hand if you don't want people to retaliate against your hero archer, just don't shoot at missile troops. Simple enough.

How good archery will turn out to be will depend on how good fighting heroes turn out to be. If fighting heroes are strong, archery will be strong. If fighting heroes are weak, archery will make them more survivable, but still may not be good. Of course items like the spider silk arrows which cast spells whenever you hit your enemy with a bow may make it alot stronger too even if you aren't a good fighter.

Another addendum

The preview was recently updated with an almost complete list of everything for the Academy and Order Magic skills. It has creature stats, a full spell list, and a full list of all the effects of Order Magic, Wizardry, Enchantment, and Charm. Most interesting is that they seem to have toned down the massive gaps between levels that were originally present: Titans have only 210 hp, and Dragon Golems 220. Also, Attack and Defense stats are present, indicating that the H3 damage system may still be in place. Magi do not have a listed range attack, which is surprising. They also have very low stats (1/3 of the hp of a Gold Golem, similar damage to a Dwarf, and worse attack than a Halfling or Dwarf), so I assume their spellcasting abilities are extremely good to make up for it.

For Melee and Archery I believe it will work like this...

Melee gives first strike, double strikes and so on to close combat attacks.

Archery gives first strike, double shots and so on to ranged attacks.

Combat now gives defensive bonuses as mentioned. So this is the skill which gives more health to the hero. The way Toughness used to do.

And Archmagi without a ranged attack? They aren't exactly the unit of preference when it comes to melee.. Now with their weak physical form (but magical abilities) they will just become the first targets of choice in the battlefield (easy to kill, and potentially devastating if left alone).

With the addition of attack and defence, the 210 hps the titans used to have is about the same as the 500+ they had originaly, except that they are now more vulnerable to attack spells (except for chaos ones of course).

I'm sure dragons will be reduced by a similar amount.

Mages will be quite vulnerable to attack, however remember there are supposed to be battlefield lines in H4 so they may be easier to protect. Time will tell how this works exactly.

Archmagi probably have a direct damage spell. This actually makes sense since that is more or less the way they've always attacked. It's just that now the number of uses will be limited by their mana (and other spellcasting which also consumes mana) rather than by "arrows".

To find the Black Dragon's HP, look here:

Here it says "40," but we know that can't be right. Since this is from a preview build, there was probably some trouble with the fonts, and it's meant to read "400." The Black Dragons have 400 HP, according to Xenophanes.

400 is still a lot more than it could be. Titans should be immortal 9and so should dragons i guess). But if it is 400 for Black Dragons then it has to be at least 350 for Titans.

There are also stats for the Haven troops up (but the links between pages don't work, you have to delete the "&PlatformID=" from the end) on page 7 of the preview. I wonder who will actually pick Champions, because Angels are much more powerful! (I'll post the stats now for convenievnce.)

Squire - 10 hp, 2-3 dmg, 5 speed, 18 move, 8 atk, 11 def, attack has chance of stunning opponent. 26 gold.
Crossbowman - 8 hp, 1-2 dmg, 2 speed, 18 move, 10 atk, 10 def, range attack, no range penalty. 32 gold.

Pikeman - 30 hp, 6-8 dmg, 4 speed, 18 move, 12 atk, 14 def, long reach (can attack from far enough away to avoid retaliation), negates first strike. 150 gold.
Ballista - 28 hp, 5-7 dmg, 4 speed, 0 move, 15 atk, 16 def, range attack, machine, no range or obstacle penalties. 160 gold.

Crusader - 65 hp, 10-16 dmg, 7 speed, 18 move, 22 atk, 23 def, two attacks, death ward. 650 gold.
Monk - 55 hp, 10-15 dmg, 5 speed, 18 move, 20 atk, 22 def, range attack, death ward. 550 gold.

Champion - 150 hp, 24-36 dmg, 6 speed, 27 move, 25 atk, 25 def, charge bonus, first strike. 2000 gold.
Angel - 230 hp, 40-65 dmg, 10 speed, 45 move, 30 atk, 34 def, flying, can resurrect troops. 4000 gold + 2 gems.

Champions are half the cost of angels, so for 4000 you can buy 300hp worth of champions or 230 worth of angels.  True angels can resurect, but champions do have first strike and charging ability.  So its not that simple of a decision.

Sure champions are half their cost, question is, will there be double their supply each week?

It's nice to know that champions are more cost effective HP wise, but if you can only buy 4 champions a week vs 3 angels, then it doesn't pay off. I'd rather get the angels instead.

Or, I suppose, if gems are in short supply, you might take Champions. But if they're produced at the same rate as Angels (which I suspect they will be; earlier it was said that all 4th level troops are 2 per week), then getting Champions puts you at a military disadvantage, even if it's somewhat of an economic advantage.

Of the four 4th levels with all stats known, only Champions require just gold (Angels and Titans both require gems, and Dragon Golems require ore).
