Nightstalker - OOC

The smell.
Oh, God that smell. It's a mix between roses, sugar and cranberries. It's everywhere, it clings to the trees, the bushes, the roads she travels. The smell lingers and changes, grows sweeter as it grows older, until sugar is all that remains. The rose smell grows stale first. I should know, I've been following it for several days now, might as well have been an eternity since I first found it. Love at first smell. Hehe, the smell changes so much, grows in so many variety as it is mingled with her fear and disgust and hatred. I could almost taste her primal urges, her instincts to flee me, but she could just as easily turn and try to kill me by now or well... that too... hehe...

Her horse will die, it has been pushed beyond the edge and is irretrievable, but still it goes on. I wonder why. Does it smell it too? Haha, stupid animal, it can't even exact what it desires to do, unlike me. I shall claim her and there is no force on this plane that can stop me, least of all her.

In the remote northern mountain village of Neerpelt a beautiful woman in a scarlet robe had arrived on a horse that collapsed the moment she dismounted. Her hair was windblown, she carried no supplies, her clothes were torn, dirty and soaked through and through. Despite all that, she still held a fair countenance which even the mud couldn't hide. The community brought her to the nearest inn where she was cleaned, laid to rest for a day and they repaired her clothes.

After about 18 hours of sleep she woke up. An hour later she stood at the inn, a fierce figure, all in all. She was an elf, apparently, one of the fair folk that hadn't passed these regions in centuries. She told the villagers she had been forced to take a detour, because her caravan had been attacked by a Nightcrawler four days ago. the monster had killed everyone except her. She claimed that the creaturehad endured many stabbing wounds and was hit by several arrows and seemed mostly unphased by it. She claimed to have hit him four times square in the chest with her bow and arrow she lost along the way.
She claimed that she came from a noble family where she came from and that anyone who would escort her on a two-week journey would be richly rewarded, if she arrived safely. As proof she held out a golden locket encrested with a red jewel.

All right, you guys are inhabitants of the village or random passers-by who stayed at the inn that night. The only people who traversed the village regularly are humans, but lizardmen mercenaries occasionally come by with merchant caravans as well. This village is a bit far-off, but it doesn't stop from priests, acrobats, outlaws, thieves, mercenaries, merchants and journeyman of the Academy to pass by frequently. You are going along with her to protect her from the forest demon. The village has no spare horses for her at the inn, FYI.

Character sheet:
Name:
Age:
Race (human or lizardman or something else, if you can come up with a good enough backstory/ explanation):
Profession:
Appearance:
Background:
Skills:
Possesions:

Note on the nightcrawler: The nightcrawler is an incredibly powerful creature of unknown origin. It's mass is about 1100 pounds and measures to about twelve feet in length when on all fours. Its strength is enogh to crush steel. It's as fast as a horse and a lot more dexterous and versatile in its terrain. It can hear well, see well and smell well. The nightcrawler hardly needs sleep. A nightcrawler will avoid fire and bright daylight and large open spaces. Superstitious folk call it a forest demon as it traverses the forests and seems to have the power of a hell.

Note on the elf: Her name is Irina, she's a powerful woman who is about 80 years old, knows some water-based spells and is an expert archer.

Anyone interested?

So let me get this straight. The story is that this elf and her caravan is attacked by this night-crawler beasty.
We the participants go along to protect her and we end up, presumably, to chasing this beasty to the ends of the earth and back untill we kill it.

You'll be the GM and controll the elf as well. We play the rest of the partymembers; with very little to say or controll about the other chars in conversation. Very little soloing I would guess.

Sounds cool. Any specific world this is set in? Any other restrictions?

Well, presumably, this beast will be dead by the end of the RP, but you won't have to chase it. It will stay very close to Irina at all times. Yes, I will rp the nightcrawler and Irina. The closest thing to soloing you would do is "go fetch fire wood on your own".

Universe is not very specific. This part of the world in which it is set is mostly inhabited by humans and elves are very very scarce. Magic is rather powerful, but mages are frail in nature. That's about it.
restrictions will be put up if I see a glaring design flaw, but currently I trust our mutual good judgement.

I'm loving it! A simple premise with a lot of potential. Kind of reminds of Jaws.

I'll get to work on a character. I'm thinking some kind of an alchemist who could obscure out scent and perhaps have some sorts of repellants or the likes with him.

Ok, how about this?

Character sheet:
Name: Burgoth
Age: 20-30, Burgoth does not keep track of his age.
Race: Orc
Profession: Bounty-hunter (Wolfpack Guild); Big Gamehunter; Assasin; Sellsword;
Appearance:Like this
Background: Burgoth grew up in the Southlands and like most Orcs was trained to be a warrior and hunter for his tribe. In fact he was one of the best of his generation. However he made one great mistake, he courted the daughter of the chieftain without his explicit premission. And for that great insult he got exiled, his tribal-tattoo on his back is now covered by a big brandmark as symbol of his exile. Since then Burgoth needed to make a living outside of his tribal lands. Now he makes a living doing what he does best: fighting and killing. He is a member of the Wolfpack Guild of Bounty Hunters and as such will hunt down criminals for the rewards. Burgoth also enjoys to hunt down large beasts and monsters, to test and hone his skills. Generally Burgoth cares very little what or who he has to fight, as long as he gets payed. Like many of his kin, Burgoth is prone to berserker-like rages. However, because of his missions often requiring subtlety and stealth, Burgoth has this under reasonable controll
Burgoth is generally a gruff person. Prejudice against Orcs oft makes people avoid Burgoth, turning him into a loner over the years. Burgoth has a vindictive streak and he will gladly put his assignments on hold to hunt down someone he has a grudge against. Nontheless Burgoth can be a loyal friend, if one can pierce his surly and harsh shell.
Skills: Swordsmanship; Berserkerrage; Survival skills; Modest Assisination; Unscrupulousness.
Possesions: Plate Legg and Shoulderarmour; Gauntlets; Chainmail shirt; Wolfpack Tabard; Greatsword; Dagger; Smokebombs; Cloak; Money-purse;Large Satchel(Currently only containing the Smokebombs); Bedroll; Clay pipe and tobacco; Dire Snowwolf(Pet); Magpie(Pet);
(Pets: Dire Snowwolf: His name is Frosthowl and is generally as surly as his owner. Usefull in a fight, as he protect his owner like it is part of his pack. Burgoth generally uses Frosthowl as his mount
Magpie: His name is Blinkeye. Generally Blinkeye is seen as a nuisance as it has the tendency to steal shiny things like coins, which it returns to his owner. Usually perches on Burgoth's shoulder, but otherwise pretty useless.)

Approved!

Also, let's get one thing straight: no grudges are to be had when player characters get hurt or mangled or, in a worst case scenario, die.
I will give the party two red shirts, so remember that.

Some deaths will be inevitable, but a lot of the outcomes are determined by your outcome. I want you to keep in mind a constant wariness for the monster.

I will buy the back story of the orc, but the elf is not going to like you one bit and this may make things harder along the way.
Oh, and one question: how does he exactly hunt big game? I see no tools in his possession that hunters would have, except for the knife, but where're the nets and bows/ crossbows?

In general, I think this could work, though.

Unless it is another player doing the hurting and/or mangling, there will be no grudges held. The grudges are for intentional hurt. So only if Irina shot Burgoth with the intention of hurting him, he will bear a grudge. So I suspect the grudge will be towards the Nightstalker mostly or perhaps some NPCs. But what do you mean with "Red shirts?"

As for the Elf not liking the Orc, I was kind of gunning for that. That kind of tension makes for more interesting story. Besides Burgoth would be used to not being liked, as most races don't like Orcs.

As for the big game hunting, that partially has to do with Orcish, or perhaps just Burgoth's, mindset. First of all ranged weapons are dishonorable in the eyes of most Orcs. Second it has to do about proving your strength. The less you need to bring down an animal, the more it proves your bravery and strength. It would be viewed as a bigger feat of strength to wrestle a boar to the ground barehanded and snap his neck, than to shoot it from a distance with a bow. Even an unsuccesfull kill with only a knife would be more worthy of praise for an Orc than to have a succesfull kill with a bow.
As such, Burgoth does most of his hunting with his bare hands, dagger and sword; preferrably in that order.

My alchemist idea kind of fell down when I considered that he'd have to carry around all sorts of ingredients and equipment and propably need a pack mule. Not to mention the need to explain why is he traveling outside of his lab and why is he carrying all that stuff with him...

I guess I'll go for some enchanter, conjurer or illusionist instead.

I like the idea of a glade RP with an actual GM and NPCs that aren't controlled by players.

EDIT
Now that I read it more carefully... What on Earth are priests, acrobats, outlaws, thieves, mercenaries, merchants and journeyman of the Academy doing passing routinely by with a 1100 pound monster eating people in the woods?

Alright, here's my char, if you'll let 'im in.

Character sheet:

Name: Quib

Age: unspecified; most probably between 20 and seven thousand years

Race: daemonic entity of the ruinous plains of hellfire (imp)

Profession: ex-familiar; currently unemployed

Appearance: a 32 cm tall, reddish, nosy and slightly overweight individual with proportionally large claws and disproportionally large ego. Possesses small wings which allow him to fly over relatively short distances when flapped maniacally. Sometimes self described as "12 inches of pure infernal fury".

Background: After a tragic magical accident that ended up with his wizard master being polymorphed irreversibly into smoking footwear, Quib found himself somehow inexplicably not banished automatically back to his plane of existence. Seizing the opportunity, he decided to carve a place for himself in this material world; and, following the maxim that you need material things to enjoy a material world, he managed to salvage a couple of enchanted rings from the flaming ruins of the wizard’s home and took off to find his luck elsewhere.
Upon his arrival in the backwater village where our story begins, Quib managed to find out that there is a giant beast refered to as a demon causing mild problems in the countryside. The beast wasn’t sighted too often, though, but still, he judged it was enough for him to make his move and present himself as the powerful demonic force behind the beast; threatening to lay ruin to the village should it not commence worshipping him right away. In an unexpected turn of events, the village folk managed to see through his clever ploy and foolishly defied him. Quib-worship, henceforth, soon appeared to have more enemies than followers; and some of the craftier heretics even dared to find sticks and stones to do away with their would-be deity.
Strategically fleeing the scene, he found a conveniently large and relatively empty (excluding several crude balls of unknown origin) satchel, seemingly belonging to a large orc (he didn’t have time to ponder what’s a large orc actually doing here) to temporarily find shelter in while the owner’s not looking. Just for a few seconds, anything to get the mob off his track. They certainly won’t search the brute, and he’d certainly leave before he notices Quib was even there. Only after he actually hid himself in the satchel had he found out that those spheric things are actually some kind of bombs. As our story catches him, he is widening his eyes in disbelief, not daring to move lest he triggers an explosion or whatever it is those things do.

Skills: Quib manages to turn both egoism and cowardice into a sort of a skill. Other than that, he is adept at stealing and lockpicking, and has retained most of the of the abilities that his former wizard master has required of him - including the ability to read scrolls, knowledge and preparation of magical experiments, casting basic cantrips and peeling potatoes. When it comes to battle, which happens mostly if Quib is either cornered or incredibly angry, his mischievousness and sheer malice grant him a useful advantage which, paired with his impish quickness, perserverance and frantic willingness to claw anything in his path, can make him a nuisance. He also possesses a demonic immunity to fire, although it still “ssstings like ‘ell, an’ trust me, I know what I’m talkin’ ‘bout”.

Possessions: two magical rings, one with a ruby, the other with an emerald; quite unaware of what it is they do. Also owns a loincloth.
