Last Stand (IC)

Desolation.  Destruction.  As far as the eye could see there was very little left.  Cars were on their hoods, windows in buildings were shattered, yet .. there was nobody around.  No sign of struggle, or bodies, or even blood.  Everything was smoking or smoldering, but it was eerily silent.  No alarms from the vehicles..nothing.

He knew where other bunkers were, but most of them were buried in the Mist.  He knew enough to stay OUT of the mist.  With only enough food to last a couple days at most, even if his bunker had not collapsed, he wouldn't have been able to wait out rescue there.  He'd have to find food, shelter, equipment...and try to get the word out.

He started forward into the street, best to keep away from anything where something could hide.  The more area you can see, the less chance something has of sneaking up on you.  He headed toward the convenient store near the edge of town.

He arrived there without incident..and right behind the store started the wall of Mist.  Most likely it totally circled the town, it would be suicide to try to make it through. According to his knowledge in lore, only 'The Legion' had that much power.  Which meant whoever was left alive was in serious trouble.  'The Legion' didn't want them to leave, it wanted them dead or made one of it's own.  Even with all of his knowledge of all the things that go bump in the night..he knew that he couldn't take on The Legion alone.

Pushing open the doors, Matt made his way into the store.  He set his duffle bag down..and started looking through what was handy.  Food, he would need that, flashlights..batteries...then he heard a *CRASH*.

Getting his hand gun out of his bag, he carefully heads back to see what made the sound.  He knew others would make their way to the store eventually, especially when they got hungry..he wasn't about to budge if he didn't have to.

Way in the back, he saw them.  Shriekers.  Well at least that's what HE called them.  Two of them.  Looking like Slugs with wings..they were not really threats themselves.  They were scavengers and wouldn't attack, but they had a unique danger all their own.  When frightened or threatened they would unleash a high pitched wail ... and right now that might as well be a dinner bell for all the nasty things in the Mist.

They were fighting each other over a mound of hamburger they had pulled out of the freezer so they hadn't sensed him yet.  Still they posed a heck of a problem.  If he planned on staying, he would want to get rid of them..but if he didn't manage to get both at once..and one got off a shriek..this place would become lunch central.  He needed a plan.

Being blind sucked, even after training yourself to the point where you have actual 3D perception.
You tended to miss the small details, and stumble easly. You usually had an idea where to place your hands, but once in a while you missed it. The same really applied to walls as well, it was REALLY annoying how you would walk into them and completely missing them once in a while.
There was tons of debris, I had no idea why the alarms never went off. they should have been done so ages ago, this place felt warped off.
Oh, and beasts of mere horror walked around every bloody corner. I would have died of hours ago without the ability to sense the nearby threads of time, but I would need help if I ran into something larger than what was to be killed by merely slicing it.
In my mouth i had merged something into some kind of smoke, I would probably look like some weird out of some west scenario with smoking around my face, only this place did not sound like a desert. Likely it would led poison me or something weird, it did contain metal of some sort after all.
And I was wearing proper armor instead of leather rags, and my revolver was replaced by a extremely square looking gun, no beautiful insignias either.

Wait, what was this?!
I sensed a fellow mans thread; he might stay in cover for hours or leap forward to his own death, another human might come and save him from something that would cause a lot of mess unless ganked properly.
There was 2 of them, these monsters, he would shoot the thing on my right likely. I missed concentration and stumbled into a wall. Why did I have to walk into walls whenever I sensed threads?!!
I sweared as loud as what I sensed was possible. I decided to help the guy staying in hiding, I would need eyes on the back before things got worse.
So I went into the room and shoot one of the things, attempting to save the guy. Hopefully the other fellow would also show up.

Johnston woke up. He had dozed off there. He looked at his watch.
"By the Lord, I should've gotten that briefing hours ago." Johnston spoke with a drawl, one his drillmaster found particularly annoying. "I had better go see what's going on."
Johnston looked at the equipment in the bunker. Nearly all was defect, so of no use to him. Johnston shook his head and climbed the ladder to the top of the bunker. Johnston opened the hatch and surveyed the area. Flabbergasted was the correct term to decribe his feelings then. "Well, someone has been awefully busy around here." The city lay in ruins, patches of mist covered the area.
Johnston climbed back down into the bunker. "So, this is what they have been talking about all last year. And here I had been thinking that they were just trying scare me, like my old parish priest used to." Johnston looked around the bunker. "Awefully few things I can use here." Except for his normal equipement, nothing special was lying around the bunker other than the chair he fell asleep in. Johnston looked at his experimental Aeger Rifle, he had been using it for 4 years now and had even given it a nickname: Gwendolyne. "The old girl is in need of a good cleaning, but I'm afraid I have no time for that now. I need to strap myself in and go look for some rations." Johnston took of his shaded glasses and put on his equipment. He had been wearing this kind of outfit for as long as he had been in training and it was like a second skin to him nowadays. Lastly he put on his visor-mask. The mask contained the nessecary shading for his eyes as well as methods of comunication and a convenient way of obscuring his features. He filled his kit out with as many ammunition he could find in the bunker, which was precious little.

Sometime later Johnston stepped out of the bunker. His natural tallents at hiding would be usefull as there was no telling what would be out there. His superiors never deemed it nessecary to tell him what kind of creatures the "Legion" contained, but for all Johnston knew this might well be someone else's doing. Carefull to keep himself out of sight Johnston crossed the terrain to a ruined building, but as soon as he was a few feet away from the bunker it collapsed. Johnston looked back, "Well, aren't I the lucky one. A few more minutes in there and I would've been burried but good."
Johnston was on his guard and kept hidden, but he had not reached the building when he heard a shot. It came from a store half a block away if he was correct.
"I certainly hope I'm not making a mistake by checking this out. But maybe there will be some rations there in that store. Can't keep myself alive here without food."
Keeping hidden, Johnston made his way there.

8 hours 31 minutes. I await.
8 hours 32 minutes. I await my orders.
8 hours 33 minutes. I await my destiny.
8 hours 34 minutes. I await my guidance.

...

9 hours 31 minutes. I heed.
9 hours 32 minutes. I heed thy call.
9 hours 33 minutes. I heed thy sight.
9 hours 34 minutes. I heed thy vision.

I open my eyes and take off my heels. I set them down beside the closet and take out my combat boots. I pull them on and tie them. Then I strap my Gens to them. I grab my Jian and strap it to my left hip. After that I put on the strapping for my Dao and throw my shield over my should and onto my back. I turn around and head to the stairs. On the way I snatch my gloves from the table. I climb up the stairs to the airlock. I roll the lock and push the door open. I enter and swing it close. It gives a distinct thunk and clang when the lock rolls into place. I place my hands against each other. I kneel and bow down my head. My hair flows infront of my eyes as I close them.

"Hold what's yours in thine hands as I hold what's mine in my heart. May there be no doubt as you shelter me from harm. May there be no regret as I shelter thee from oblivion. I shall pass on thy blood, uphold thy legacy and remember thy pride. This I promise thee.", I rise up.
"Attract my eyes, quide my hand and lead my step. This I ask from thee.", I open my eyes and draw my Jian as the door to the world hisses and slowly creeks open. I am ready to take on the world.

Matt was shocked when a shot rang out, and one of the Shriekers went down.  He fired at the other as quickly as he could, barely managing to get it before it sends out a shriek that would call who knows what to investigate.  He didn't see anybody else, or know where the shot came from..so he whipped around trying to see who or what he was facing.

Matt looked at the figure that entered the room.  He was sure it wasn't dangerous, if it had wanted him dead he would be by now..and it wasn't a creature.  He knew that much thanks to his lore skills.

"Um hey.  You really should be careful around these things, it doesn't take them long to draw much much worse things." he looked back at the Shriekers.  "What concerns me though, is that Legion usually don't use them.  It prefers much more aggressive and dangerous creatures.  Which makes me think it is hunting for something.  I just don't know what."

Johnston had entered the store just after the second shot and heard the two men before he saw them. They were standing near the corpses of two slimy winged....things. One of the men was an African-American who looked like walked straight out of a library, the thick glasses and the sweatervest made the immage complete. The other man was wearing combat armour, though it was distinctly different from Johnston's. The milky glaze over his eyes indicated that the man was blind as a bat.
Johnston followed their conversation, keeping himself hidden in a nearby aisle. Then the library man indicated that the things could be hunting something.
"If I may be so bold as to hazzard a guess," Johnston said in his trademark drawl while stepping out of hiding. "Whatever these things are, I have the distinct feeling they are hunting us."
Johnston walked over to the things to inspect them. They were bound to come across more of them and it would be usefull to know where their weak spots are.
"Now, can any of you fine sirs....." Johnston paused, with an introspective look on his face. Though nobody could see it with his visor mask on.
"Where Are my manners. I am truely sorry sirs, Let me introduce myself. My name is Johnston B. Davis, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." While introducing himself, Johnston removed his Visor and put on a pair of sunglasses in a single move.
"Who may you fine gentlemen be?"

"Ah, another gentleman." I said. He was just about inside my 10 meter zone, so I managed to view that he removed his helmet and put on some sunglasses.
He was wearing armor made of a mix of experimental plates glued together in a decent pattern. He had gun that was likely a sniper rifle on his back, and had a SMG as backup weapon. Oh and a undecorated combat knife.
I bowed and introduced myself with manners, while part of my accent slipped partially back into my speech: "Fredrik Frank my gentleman, to be assigned as some sort of scout in the future." I went over towards him and attempted to shake his hand, going by polite manner.
I also shaked the hand with the civilian, likely some sort of loremaster.
Just to keep politeness at the level it should be.

"You.", it growls in a rough voice as dark blood flows from it's mouth. "What are you?"
"I am Wei Ming Guizishou.", I impale the creature through it's green eye with my Jian. As I pull my Jian out of the demon's head I feel a slight chill on my right shoulder. I roll to the left just in time to see a dark figure rush past me. I get up. It's completely black. A horrid figure of wolf and ape put together. Revealing it's glistening white teeth it let's out a bone chilling howl. I take my shield from my back. I close my eyes and fasten it to my arm.
"Come unto me. Lend me thine strenght. I shall be thine vessel. Unleash thine wrath onto the unruly. Let us strike down this violent abomination.", I open my eyes and charge.

As for the Shriekers, I think you might be right.  I just don't know why. This organization has been around for a long time, why would the Legion be concerned about us.  Heck I am just a rookie."

He didn't know these two, so he had no way of knowing if they were experienced operatives or not.

Johnston shook the hands of both men.
"Well, at least you have some knowledge of whatever these things may be. As for me, I am a trained sniper. Though I have only been a recruit for about a year now. But I've served in the army for 4 years before that."
Johnston scratched his neck, he had neglected to shave and his beard was starting to itch.
"No, I think sniper is a misnomer. I'm more of a 'Lone Hunter' as I do not operate with a spotter. Heck the only people I've seen in the last couple of years are my superior officer, my drillmaster and my poor prey."
Johnston booted the slimy thing again. "Now good sir Namon, would you be so kind as to tell what, in the name of our Lord, these things are and what the Legion is. Because I have only been told spookstories and kept in the dark mostly."
Johnston realised his mistake and turned to Frank.
"I am truely sorry, sir Frank. That pun was not intended."

"These particular creatures are called Shriekers. Indigenous mostly to tropical jungle areas such as the Amazon, they are tremendous cowards and avoid people as much as possible.  That is why not many know much about them.  They are scavengers, and will not attack a living creature.  Capable of emitting a very loud shriek that can be heard for miles around, they use this to call their own kind for back up."

He pauses to catch his breath.  "As for The Legion, the original story comes from the bible.  A demon was cast out, and when it's asked it's name it replied 'I am Legion'.  Originally it was believed that it was the spirit of 2000 different demons, but according to follow up research it is now think that is a misunderstanding.  We now think that the Legion is comprised of different creatures, two thousand different types, that nobody actually think exists.  The problem with the Legion is two fold, the main creature that is behind it, is a demon second in power only to Lucifer..if Lucifer ever managed to get a physical form.  The second problem is..what other creatures make it up fluctuates..making it difficult to fight."

He is gearing up to go over all the creatures that are known to be part of the Legion..if given the chance..he could talk for HOURS.

Johnston grabbed a bottle of soda, opened it with a loud fizzle and half downed it. Then Johnston cringed.
"I am truely sorry, good sirs. I should have offered you a sodipop as well before I drank mine. Blasted solo-missions. Being alone for so long makes one forget his manners."
Johnston grabbed two more bottles. Tossed one to Namon, who caught it albeit clumsily. And held one in front of Frank.
"In front of you, sir." Johnston said, before Frank grabbed the bottle.
"Now I truely do hope that an oldfashioned bullet between the eyes is enough to take out most of them there demons. Which is more than I can say for these here Shreeky-things. These things don't seem to have eyes. Or a face for that matter. Now they do seem squishy enough for a bullet to pass through several, but I would need to know where to hit them. These here beasties got any weak bits?"

"Don't tell me that they forgot to give you silver bullets? I think I overheard some sergants arguing about how much silver they should waist just to be on the safe side, back a few weeks ago. And thanks for the drink." I opened the soda and took a sip of it, not my taste but it was a good drink regardless.
"But honestly, demons? I always thought of them as eldritch abominations from beyond, alien invaders of some sort. I don't remember my few lore classes ever covering fighting them back in the ages, why was that?" I got a curious face.
And before i forgot, some less than critical mission information must be shared: "Oh, and I am trained in recon and scouting. Might sound weird since I am blind, but that is thought of as an advantage. My powers include slowly shaping metal, and sensing threads of time. Time is non-linear, every choice that can be made produces different threads, mere wims produce the current timeline we are in, and roughly I have the ability to see the threads of the current timeline, most of the time I see 1 or 2 minutes ahead. But it happens I see years ahead, or great forks in the road, which happens rarely. Oh, and i got a sort of area perception instead of eyesight, so long we stay close nothing should be able to properly sneak up upon us."

Those are only boxes of 20, mind. And a good ol' pouch of normal bullets, but I have not bothered to count those yet. But as I said, none of them are silver." Johnston said while absently fidling with a bullet in his hand.
"They've never bothered to give a loar-class either. All I was told is that we were trained to fight the Legion and that we were earth's last and only defence should it come to that." Johnston mocked his SO's voice in that sentence. "But nothing other than that."
"As for eyesight, as long as I wear sunglasses or something of the like. I can see the individual feathers on a hummin'bird at 400 yards. But with all of this fog around, that won't do me much good. So how do we carry on from here?"

He points off in a direction but continues.  "What really worries me is the lack of bodies.  We might have to worry about zombies.  Which there are three kinds.  Reanimated infected bodies.  A head shot with regular bullets, or any type of head trauma will stop them.  They are regular people killed by the second type, and most of the reanimated infected will be people we have known and trained with.  The second type is primary infected.  A small number of those infected never die from the disease.  It will require killing them, and then re-killing them. The last is the really worrying kind though.  Magically animated.  Decapitation just angers them, total destruction is the only way to stop them." he pauses.  "Other then that, I am ready to try for the Vault if you are."
