You may find Heroes modding restrictions quite annoying, the 256 colors used, the small size and limited frames make 3DS max quite useless.


Also, I wanted to add that the primary reason I decided to post my offer here was because of the dedication you guys show for improving the rather archaic but still excellent game H3 is. Especially Salamander, whom seems like having a plethora of energy to spend here. Kudos to you!

As much as I look forward to H6 coming out, considering its visual quality is amazing (not including the current town window), there's something magical about H3 which is more about its engine and game play, rather than the graphics themselves. Since we're now able to update & improve them, I'm all up for joining in on that adventure.

Screenplay writer would be accurate, too. I'm a script writer for TV series. Not very useful when dealing with ERM though

You want to remade WoG(and maybe SoD)-units and graphics? Where you want to get material?
You want to make better render of our ripped creature and buildings?
Any other?

And other question: prefer Max, Maya, Poser?

You're not the only one. I would like to get any 32-bit graphics just to test it in game.
Current graphics already looks suprisingly good after all these years, I can't believe they are 8-bit only. The problem arises when you try to repaint them and run out of matching colors

Still, scaling 32-bit graphics down to 256 colors doesn't seem to be a problem, but it's not possible the other way. So you'd better have some 32-bit models on your HD when the time comes.

I will clarify: I would like to participate in (not do everything solo) remaking some (probably not all since that would take ages) of the gfx of H3/WoG by using 3D software in combination with nice 2D textures, not done by me. The advantages of this approach are:

- No trouble with copyright infringements since we're creating new art.
- Full control of unit's looks & their animation.
- Full control of the render quality thus transparency, for use in the game. Currently, a lot of the units have flawed transparency borders, most often a too dark edge. This could now be remedied.
- Freedom to make whatever new unit conceivable, though this could end up becoming an infinite thread discussing what to add to the game. That's not my intention here.

As to your last question, I mostly use Maya professionally. I have used XSI as well, but prefer Maya. I have very little 3DS/Max experience (none actually), but models in that format can be imported into Maya so that's not an issue.

I will be using mental ray for rendering and know many professional lighters & compers in the industry to help me out with the end result. What I need from you guys are either models of units done from scratch, or free pre-made models of good enough quality. I do not recommend using ripped 3D models from games (like WoW) due to obvious copyright infringement. Let's just keep it clean. Poser is perhaps a good tool for creating some quick humanoid models. Not sure how much clothing and props Poser has on its built in models though.

I don't think I want to focus on improving renders/versions of the bitmap graphics (rigid buildings etc). I would like to concentrate on the animated units, i.e. the creatures used in battles and perhaps neutral animated ones on the adventure map.

Hope that clarifies it a bit better.

The best help, besides making some models, would be sharing with us a guide on how to. In this way, you will not be alone. So far, except some tricks learned the hard way, 3DS max skills are pretty basic on this forum, lack of professionals.

In this thread you can see creatures ONLY FROM GAMES. Are you sure that you ask in the right place? We don't work with free models. Of course, reason of it is not that bad quality of them. Free models rarely have good animation and style what we need. Ripping creatures is more simply than making own and we are not 3D-modelers.

About copyrights. You can forgot about it here because we are very small objects for legal prosecution. By other word, nobody care.

For sure. I come from a view that revolves around sharing experience and knowledge, not holding on to it out of fear of losing the upper hand.

As a previous anim supervisor, I can certainly lead and guide in terms of animation. As for rigging, there's plenty of tricks and tips to give away here as well. I think one good plan would be for me to do one unit from A to Z (A starting with a finished model) and then share that procedure with you. Sounds good?

By all means, fire away questions in regards to 3D rigging & animation. Modelling I know some of, but I'm not a pro there. Specific questions concerning 3DS Max are pointless asking me about since I hardly know any of that program. But most 3D software packages share a common thread of technique. X, y & z are the axis in all of them, and the timeline represents the frames used for animation (thus the fourth axis). Polygons are polygons, splines are splines, IK is IK. A bend deformer or skin cluster may be called something else in another package, but it's probably mostly a matter of terminology.

Glad to hear something like that from you, but i must say:

- There are only some good 3D skill ppl in this forum like Salamandre, Itisjustme, Meastro ... but as i can see they too busy with their project (like Meastro MM8.5) or re-tired like Salamandre, and real life like Itisjustme.

- There was have some good 2D artist, but re-tired too so when we make 3D -> 2D will lack ppl re-touch it.

- Ur aim too big, i think u can not complete it

That is good to hear. As I've said earlier, I have no plan on taking on a 100% overhaul of all H3 unit graphics all by myself. I wasn't even planning on all the units being redone anyway, even though that would've been cool.

What I'm thinking thus far, is for me setting up a stream-lined process using Maya which can be used for doing many units quickly. Reusing rigs, swapping props, tweaking anim, creating cycles for reuse, setting up a standard lighting & rendering rig. Basically everything that I'm imagining 3DO, Nival & Black Hole have done as well in order to achieve the output in the time they have for all those units. After all, Heroes 3 doesn't use a 3D engine. There's no rotating cameras or zoom in & out function. Thus, a lot of shortcuts can be made.

Thanks for the good luck just remember, my intention was never committing to recreating all units by myself. I'm not that mad.
