Favourite Books ...
first of all I know is is hugely of topic but i have met so many great people playing homm and participating in discussions here that i would like to know. Deth8's comment about my quote got me to write it.
I have an ulterior motive: I am going away for the summer to work in Canadian Arctic and books will be the only entertainment, well apart from beer fueled discussions with fellow researchers. and i know i will be going therough a HoMM withdrawal so books will be my resort.
So let's start, here are mine:
1. "Ender's game" by Orson Scott Card SF, brilliant book, impossible to put down, and if i recommend just one book to anyone i recommend this one and NEVER has anyone told me later that they didn't like it.
2. "Catch 22" By Joseph Heller this one will make you laugh and cry and cry from laughter again and again. Yossarian rules 
3. Damn!! I always have trouble with the 3rd. Maybe "08/15" by Hand Helmut Kirst, but the English translation is terrible  Or maybe "Foundation" by Isaac Asimov the 1st 3 books in the foundation series actually the rest are crappy Oh no i know the "Earthsea" trilogy by Ursula K. LeGuin excellent very subtle fantasy, that's it 
But that is more then 3 I hope you don't mind.

Fav Books!
Hey, these are all probably very common favourites out there, but what the hell!
1: The Dark Elf series by RA Salvatore. Deep and fantastic, I haven't yet read about a character that has the depth of Drizzt.
2: Magician and the following trilogys by R E Fiest. These books are a must
3: The Axis trilogy (the first three), by I forgot her name! LOL It would definitely rank up there in terms of characterisation, pity the world in which it was set wasn't more detailed and cleverly thought out.
4: The Dragonlance trilogy. LOL, this stuff is probably kiddy rated by now, but as far as fast-paced novels go, these books are extremely memorable. I bet all of you remember reading these at some stage.

Her name is Sara Douglass Shae...the first 5 books were good...6th sucked. My faves are the Katharine Kerr novels, Daggerspell, Darkspell, Dawnspell etc

The song of ice and fire by George R.R. Martin is the best fantasy fiction I have read by quite a large margin.
Just about any classic literature I enjoy though...at least american.

I've enjoyed greatly Frank Herbert's "Dune", but only the first two books.

My tip for you are the great books from our countryman Andrzej Sapkowski about "Wiedzmin". If u already read those books - u know what i'm talking about. If not - u miss a thing...

I would think any of the romance novels with Fabio on the cover would suffice. in addition to any comic books or Penthouse magazines you can get your hands on

J.R.R. Tolkien!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ist a must read....u can read all his books - best of course The Lord Of The Rings - over and over again.....check a bookstore he wrote very much about middleearth....
about the rest: read shae_trielles post...shes absolutely right!! (cant belive i said that now *g*)

Thanks guys, all of you especially Zud LOL keep them coming.
I have to get my hands on one of those fantasy series, i was recommended " the wheel of time" and i really liked it
Which american classics you had in mind pluvious, i am not too familiar with them
O yeah Dune series was great, I actually liked all of them a lot. I liked the progression of his universe through time. I think seeing what the characters, institutions and their legacies became was the best part of Dune
And yeah I have read Sapkowski, Zonek and have to agree, brilliant fantasy.

Hmm im a big fan of Stephen King and am working my way through them all.
So far ive read IT, Firestarter, Skeleton Crew(reading at moment short stories), The Shawshank Redemption, Eye of the Dragon, Running Man,The Long Walk, Pet semetary and the Stand.
Id say ITs still the best then the Stand.

about anything you can find by tom robbins or richard brautigan is good stuff (that is if you cant get the penthouse mags and comic books of course)

Books
My personal favorite from about 12-14 years ago are the original Dragonlance novels. I also like the few series of novels the Gary Gygax published ( i think they had Gord the thief as the main character, i may be mistaken on the name).
Also enjoy the RA Salvatore dark elf trilogy novels quite a bit.
I have not read a book in years, that is why i only have reference to these older books.

Hey Cool! A thread about books.
I agree with all of the posters so far in their picks but I think fans of Raymond E. Feist should stay away from the Riftwar Legacy series as the quality of his writing is way down. But His Riftwar, Serpentwar, and Daughter of the Empire sagas are absolutlely amazing!! IMO.
Strategy fans would really appreciate Dave Duncan's The Great Game trilogy. It is kinda like Homm in it isn't over till the end! Duncan's Seventh Sword trilogy is also really good.
Orson Scott Cards stuff is all good and Ender's Game is the best although Enchantment is a really close second, imo.
For Dragonlance fans check out Weis and Hickman's new War of Souls trilogy as the fist book is soooo good!(of course it is not finished yet, just 2 books so far) And my absolute favorite fantasy series has to be the Deathgate Cycle by them.
Peter f. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy (which is 6 books) is really good as is The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. Herbert and Tolkien are masters of the genre and are always recommended. Terry Pratchett is also amazing.
The Trigger by Clarke and McDowell is a really good read as well.
The Song of Ice and Fire by Martin is wonderful but isn't finished yet, is it? So it is difficult to tell if it will live up to the hype and hopes of the reader. I have only read the first 2 books of the 3 that are out but it is really, really good so far!
For really good classic fiction I have to recommend Charles Dickens!! What good American classics do you recommend Pluvious? The only good one I read in college was Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and it was just so-so, imo.
There are so many other good books and authors but this is enough for now!

Maxym...some classic literature could include books such as of mice and men, catcher in the rye, 1984, among others. I recommend checking out amazon.com and checking out the editor selections ot best sellers (although not fool-proof).
And jiels, the third book of song and ice and fire is out and definately the best of the 3 so far. There is a follow-up triology planned as well. And I can't imagine Martin putting out anything but his best work.
Robin Hobb and the liveship traders or farseer trilogy are good as well.

Hey Pluvious,
The third is the best!? Cool, I can't wait now. I was gonna buy it but as I bought the first 2 in softcover I am now waiting for it to come out in softcover. (what stupid people we collectors are)
I have heard lots about Catcher in the Rye but never had a chance to study it in college. I have to read it thanks to the posters on this board, they seem to have good taste. Throughout my quest for the coveted English Degree()I never got a chance to read it. My classes were always ancient literature and creative writing, I kinda missed out on American literature. D'oh!

I guess I prefer american literature because I am american...and easier to relate to. Plus I only speak one language unfortunately.
Many people consider other literature to be better...and obviously some of which has a much longer tradition than american as well.

Ringworld is by Larry Niven. I have read one book in the series and thought it was okay. Typical Larry Niven stuff. Good ideas and concepts. As it was, I think, the fifth book I can't really say too much more. My friend liked it. He has pretty good taste.
