Their development plans were created before the Actually Unfortunate Disaster, so... yes, ironic. But serious.

I agree with you. There are many persons (well, not that many, but a considerable amount) who loves anything that "comes from Japan". And I understand them. The media refers Japan as a perfect country. But people don't understand that it is far from truth. I'm not going to talk about animes or maga because people who loves japan just because of that are lame.

However, I don't think this creature can be an example of how there are people who love anything from japan, because it has a good design.

Japanophilia is an over used term, it's just a typical "traffic light" situation, I.E. people claim they always get stuck in front of the red light, the fact is though, that they only remember being stuck behind red lights because green lights you just don't register, you just keep on trucking.

People bring up anime and manga they like a lot, because they like them a lot, but there are plenty of anime and manga people don't like, they just aren't inclined to speak much about them.
Thus it's a lot easier to apply a label to people that refers to them liking stuff from Japan.

Another thing that crops up a lot, specifically in relation to Japan, China, Korea or other far eastern countries with a lot of media coverage, by western standards, their myths and legends are REALLY weird, and if you can't "familiarize" yourself with this weirdness and try to understand it, you, as a human being, will instinctively reject it, it's a perfectly normal psychological reaction.

Also bear in mind, that from their point of view, western myth is REALLY weird, particulairly Norse and Christian, it's why you see so much Norse mythology and Christianity references crop up in Anime and Manga, the Japanese and Koreans (who also produce a lot of Manga (Manhwa)) are fascinated by the very bizzare and alien nature of the stories.

Short version: It's not so much that it's from Japan, it's that it's different and weird by our standards, some people like this weirdness, some people don't.

As for me?
I'm a big fan of Japanese mythology, but I'm a big fan of most forms of myth and legend, so that's not saying much.

Well, of course there are some creatures based more on indian cultures, but if you look at it, all the non-english names of the creatures are japanese names. There are so many countries the faction was based on, why not using a chinese name, or an indian one?

But yes, you're right. It's not a japanese town.

However, I was agreeing with Baklava about the japanophilia (thantks for giving me a word I can use, Mr Dragon), not saying it is a japanese town

OFF-topic I didn't know that there was somebody else here who also likes the extra credits

Yes I'm quoting myself, you'll see in a moment, and yes it's relevant to this topic, so bear with me a for a second.

How did Mr.Dragon develop such a strong interest in myth and legend? amongst many other things?
Well because since he was a little feller, he's been playing computer games, particulairly lots of games that make references to real world myth and legend in this case.
This phenomenon is called: "Tangential Learning"
Same happens with Mr.Dragon and the books, comics, movies or artwork he experiences.
A lot of video games make references, we become interested and want to find out who, what and where.
To me Heroes of Might and Magic, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Final Fantasy VII, Secret of Mana, Age of Empires, Diablo, have been more then fun, they've caused to go out into the world and find out about where all this crazy stuff came from.

How does this relate to the topic?
Well it's how I got interested in Japanese myth in the first place, and it's because of this phenomenon that Heroes of Might and Magic VI, might help educate you about Japanese myth, not be teaching you about it, but by getting you interested (hypothetically speaking)
Same goes for other "obscure" references such as the Llamasu or Mother Namtaru.
Edit: For the record, yes... Anime and Manga caused me to delve in Japanese myth initially.

If you want a brilliant explenation of what this is go watch this:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2957-Tangential-Learning
It's about video games and education, and it taught me about myself, why I learned to speak/write english in the first place and why the hell I trundle through Wikipedia so much!

Well I don't want to force you anyway, it's all up to you mate!

Kinda the point of a forum right? discussing and sharing thoughts, nobody is forcing you to read through it, you choose to do so.

Edit: listen to Wckey, he knows what he's talking about.
I watch Extra Credits a lot, love it, so very insightful, but this particular episode blew me away because of the insight it gave me into my own hobbies.

Don't get me wrong. I love Extra Credits, I watch every week since the beginnings. I think a lot more people and especially developers should watch.

But it is rather off-topic and uncalled for to bring it up in this thread.
When discussing "Whether Food should be a resource in HoMMVII?", I do not bother you guys with my favorite recepies for grilling steaks and making pasta.

@Elvin: Saying something is uncalled for is hardly censoring someone's thought.

I don't think it's very off-topic, the thread started about the kappa and afterwards started discussing around the asian elements the game is adopting, I was merely pointing out (rather lengthly I admit, and perhaps in a lot of detail) the positive aspects is a richer and more varied source material.
Of course what one considers relevant to the topic is (within reason) subjective.

This meta-topic on the other hand is now very much off-topic.
Not that this thread's topic meritted it's own thread anyway....

Edit: @Elvin below this post: True it was rather funny.

If the upgrade names are just translations of the base names, then that's really lame.

At least it has synergy with the rest of the lame names of this edition ^_^

I actually do not have any major complains design-wise though. Every single creature looks appealing in it's artwork for (although that sometimes does NOT translate equally in CGI form => vestals ). The main issue I have with the creatures are the names (which are *TERRIBLE*) and the lack of mythical creatures (which imo is a minor issue, although it takes away a lot of the flavor the game has imo)

We got:
Snow maiden -> Yuki Onna (Cool)
Spring Spirit -> Mizu Kami (for a creature that looks more indian than japanese, it's strange that it has a japanese name, but it's still a good name)
Shark Guard -> Japanese name for Shark (Well, hard name to remember, but it's still good)

Now japanese gamers got:
Yuki Onna (or something very similar) -> Yuki Onna
"Spring" Kami -> Mizu Kami
Japanese name for Shark -> Japanese name for Shark.

Japanese gamers will suffer more than us

But truth is: foreign names always sound better (I know that because my country has the habit of not dubbing movies or translate games )
