The Ares Incident (WH40K OoC)

My lord high inquisitor,

Per your request, I have finished compiling all the available information regarding the inquisitor, Atticus Nines.  His short career as an Inqusition operative was unremarkable in most ways.  In fact, the only exceptional thing about him is his disappearance.  About two years ago, while investigating Chaos activity, he and his companions simply disappeared.  There is no evidence to support if he was killed, turned to the dark powers, or defected to xenos.  He just vanished.  While not an exceptional fate in a galaxy such as ours, his disappearance brought my attention to a strange lead he had been working on.

The lead involved a cult in possession of xeno and possibly demonic artifacts.  It also pointed to possible rogue inquisitor involvement.  The late inquisitor referred to his investigation as Project Ares.  I have reviewed all of the Inquisitor Nines's notes and after hours upon hours of sifting through paranoid ramblings and insane theories, I discovered a small crumb of information: Sven Ol'tan.

Sven Ol'tan is the second eldest son of the infamous Ol'tan clan.  As you no doubt are aware, the Ol'tan clan has had its hooks into a very wide range of dubious activity, including xenos artifact smuggling.  Unfortuantely, the Ol'tan clan is very good at keeping its business private and all investigations into its activity has ended abruptly.  Sven Ol'tan is a particuarly colorful member of the clan and has encountered the Inquisition before.  Unfortunately, his records are completely sealed.  Even more worrisome is that whoever sealed the files, had higher than magenta grade clearance.  Forgive my ignorance, my lord, but I did not know our clearance surpassed magenta level.

I hope this information has aided you in your decision making, my lord.

May the Golden Throne watch over you.

=====================================================================
The Ares Incident

So begins the start of a new WH40k RPG.  This one will be a little different from last time.  For starters, it will not die due to lawschool related stress.  Secondly, I will be taking a backseat to the action and will not have an active character in the game.  If anything, I'm the guy who sent you to investigate. I will still act as the GM but not in as direct of a manner as the other RPGs.

For this game, one forum member will assume the role of the inquisitor who wrote the letter above.  The other members will serve on his or her retinue.  It will utlimately be the inquisitor who decides the role of the investigation, for good or bad.  It will be the inquisitor's job to start the investigation and follow leads.

Being set in WH40k, I want people to be familiar of what type of environment it is.  It's not a happy place.  People die.  ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME!  Well, not all the time, but a good amount of it.  Death is to be expected in this game.  If you try to get in a fist fight with a Warboss, you are 99.99% going to be smashed to a bloody pulp.  Just be aware of your situation and your environment.

OK, on to classes/henchmen.  First, for the inquisitor, it's whoever wants to be it.  If there are multiple applicants, I will role a die and determine it that way.  As to the other characters, I am listing some roles taking from the Grey Knights Codex of Inquisition henchmen.  Be forewarned, you will be following whoever the Inquisitor is.

Henchmen Ideas

Banisher (More commonly known as a priest):  Your faith is your shield and your zeal is your weapon.  You are a follow of the Imperial Creed and have total faith in the God Emperor of Mankind.  Your life is dedicated to hunting down the wicked and handing out judgment, mostly through a giant, 2-handed chainsword.

Crusader:  Part of the Ecclesiarchy's honour guard, crusaders are pious warriors of exceptional calibur.  It is a difficult life, one that foregoes even simple pleasures in favor of training and pragmatisim.  Armed with storm shields and power swords, crusaders are very dangerous melee fighters.

Psykers: Powerful individuals who can channel the powers of the Warp.  Most inquisitors are psykers and dangerous in their own right, but sometimes even more psychic muscle is required.  While very powerful individuals, psykers are a constant threat to those around them and distrusted by many.  Under the wrong conditions, psykers can even serve as conduits to the Warp and bring daemons in to the materium.

Mystic: Minor psykers who excel at coordination and communication.  You serve as the unseen eyes and ears, listening and gazing into the Warp.  Without effective communication, an inquisitor can quickly find himself in a hopeless situation with no reinforcements.

Interrogators: Inquisition agents who often serve as second in command to the inquisitor.  Most aspire to become Inquisitors after decades of service to the Ordos.  Each possesses unique skills and talents to aid the inquisitor.  They also have acccess to better technology than most Imperial agents.

Soldiers:  Sometimes you just need a big damn gun to solve a problem.  That's where soldiers come in.  Hailing from the ranks of planetary defense forces, Imperial Guard, or Inquisiton Storm Troopers, soldiers are invaluable to the success of the Inquisition. Well versed in melee and ranged comabt, soldiers serving the inquisition are every ready to combat the alien, the mutant, and the heretic.  Working for the inquisition has some great perks to soldiers, notably access to more dangerous and protective gear.

Scholars:  Knowledge is power.  Scholars have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and keen researchers and detectives.  An inquisitor can always benefit from intelligent analysis of the enemy, situation, artifacts, and the like.  Your research could very well shape the fate of the universe.

Operatives:  Sometimes authority from the Golden Throne is not enough.  Sometimes you just need to use subterfuge and guile to get the job done.  Thieves, data-hackers, smugglers, spies, sabouteurs; all are useful tools to an inquisitor.  All must be quick thinkers and know how to get out of danger safely.

Medics:  The universe is a nasty place and people get hurt.  A lot.  All the time.  Let's just say its constant and secretly, you are hurting right now and just don't know it.  It's always good to have someone to patch you up around.  It's also good to have someone who knows how to save a life and how to take it if need be.  Whether trained in the PDF, Imperial Guard, or by other means, your charge is to keep the servants of the Emperor alive to dispense their duty.

Death Watch Space Marine:  The ultimate weapon of the Emperor.  You are superhuman, encased in power armor, and wield weapons capable of laying waste to the most fearsome of foes.  You are a supreme warrior and there is little that can stand before you.  You are also in high demand and on loan to the Inquisition.  Only 1 per game.

Tech Priest:  Servants of the Omnissiah aspect of the Immortal God Emperor.  Tech Priests are responsible for keeping the machines of the imperium running.   After receiving training on Mars, servants of the Adeptus Mechanicus are sent around the galaxy blessing and creating weapons with which mankind fights its enemies.  Most are cybernetically augmented, possessing tech harnasses, mechanical limbs, and other bodily modifications.

Battle Sister: Members of the Adeptus Soroitas, Sisters of Battle serve the Emperor with unflinching loyalty.  They serve as the militant arm of the Ecclesiarchy.  Equipped with power armor, bolters, and faith, they bring righteous death to those who would defy Him On Earth.

Assassins: Sanctioned killers of the Vindicare and Callidus temples, or various Death Cults.  They exist solely to kill and train tirelessly to perfect their art.  Vidicare assassins bring death from incredbile distances with their Exitus Rilfes.  Callidus assassins strike from within, relying on polymorphine to disguise, infilitrate, and assassinate.  Death Cult assassins are trained in the blade and wield it with superhuman finesse.  As with the Space Marine, assassins are rare servants and only 1 is allowed in this game.

If anybody is interested in these classes, let me know.  As with the inquisitor, if there is more than one applicant, than a die will be cast and I will pick the winner based on the score.

I picked a class, now what?
Make a bio.  Follow this format:

Name - Who you will be.
Class - What role you will fulfill.
Age - How old you are in game.
Affiliation - Member of the Ecclesiarchy/Chapter/Temple/Regiment, etc, etc.
Training:  Any special training that makes you unique.  Ex.  Demolitions, hacking, ability to tie shoe with one hand.
Equipment: Your gear.  I will provide gear lists once I know exactly who will be doing what.  You will be provided with various options and be allowed to pick which items you want.  You will be limited to a few though.  If there is a really unique item (like an hierloom power axe) you would like, let me know and I will see if there is a way to make it work.

For example, here is mine:

Name:  Lord High Inquisitor Omega
Class/title/role:  Lord High Inquisitor
Age: Classified.
Affiliation:  Classified.
Training: Classified.
Equipment:  Classified.

Once the Inquisitor is chosen, we'll figure out personal histories and how you came to be in the service of the inquisitor.  I will explain it more in detail later.

I will update more tomorrow.

Heehe I couldn't have thought of a better way to kick off your Glademodship^^.

And hell yeah I'd be interested. I'd very much be interested in the Inquisitor position.

Also while knowledge of the universe and lore is always a bonus how much do you think will be required for "smooth" participation? I get the impression that you shouldn't be a total newcomer but I guess that really depends on how you want this to play out.

For the Assasin role for example if someone goes for an official temple Assasin over some freelancer I do think atleast some loreknowledge would be required since these Temples are very rich in defining characteristics that marks them as a unique group of individuals. For example if I were to say I want to be an Eversor Assasian in a covert Inquisitorial mission that'd be kinda weird.

How is it determined when a sanctioned psyker player character blows up or is taken over by Chaos in this RPG?

I'd be interested in doing an interrogator again, but I'll do it seriously, this time. Well, he'll still be a tad incompetent (him being still rather inexperienced and all), but he'll drop the torture fetish (for the most part.)

Quote:
Potential Inquisitors are often drawn from the Progena of the Schola Progenium who show the most promise particularly in intellectual or psychic areas most prized by the investigative arms of the Inquisition.

And since I'm not very knowledgeable lore-wise (only have the wh40k wiki at my disposal at the moment), I think I'll go for an interrogator that shows promise in the area of psychic abilities.

EDIT: unless I'm committing major heresy right now, or something, I feel like a seven year old, trying to talk about quantum mechanics. Maybe I should just take some muscle, like an imperial guardsman or something...

I think you were a great Interrogator last time. The spoon line is probably the most hillarious thing I've ever read in the Glade.
There is nothing wrong with saying that your character has psychic potential when you're playing an interrogator. Like the lore states psychic talent or affinity isn't a particularily rare trait amongst Inquisitors (well depending on branch they're are more inclined to be hired than others or vice versa). Being an empath is for example a good ability that isn't game breaking at all but very "interrogatorish".

I don't think I've ever read about a sane mortal sanctioned psyker. Astropaths yes but Sanctioned Psykers? Naah they're all very very erratic and have next to no communication with their surroundings except for their superiors giving them orders so I don't really see the appeal in playing one. The mortal psykers seem a lot more like tools than SM Psykers who are actually (more or less) in charge of their powers and can direct them at will instead of just letting lightning burst from their eyes while crossing their fingers they're not going to blow up again.

Unsanctioned Psykers seem a lot more "sane" actually since they've had the chance to develop as a person (most likely for evil though) rather than being forced into a "conduit" role by the Librarium or whatever organisation is in charge of mortal sanctioned Psykers.

Oh, please, the more the merrier, meroe. Besides, experience isn't too important. I've seen people doing this for years and they still employ the same blandness they've employed since their first RPG where they were the dark, brooding knight who could throw fireballs with his hands, happened to be able to cleave a dragon in two and had a tragic past, when his village was destroyed by an orc raid.

EDIT: All right, wasn't aware of the "sanctioned psykers are all insane"-clause of the deal. I did figure unsanctioned psykers probably wouldn't be employed by the imperium.

Nononononono that wasn't what I ment to say Dagoth! There are plenty of sane and very powerful human psykers but most of them are Inquisitors however or people of exceptional high rank (Malcador the Sigilite for example who probably would have had no difficulty besting any SM psyker). Considering this is an inquisitorial revenue it is completely possible for them to have a psyker that's more or less just a "pet" being used for its one ability and nothing else (because rank-and-file psykers often have nothing else to offer except for their ability the rest of the time they're just non luccid stable lunatics that are secured with all maner of charms and chains in order to not be a danger to those arround them) or a sanctioned psyker that actually is also a human being (as in still in charge of his personality and sanity). It's just that being a Psyker is a rare trait in the Wh40k universe ergo being a competent one (as in not being a victim of your ability and being "in charge" of it as much as you can) is even rarer which is why these people are usually characters of great importance or status.

It's not blowing anything out of proportion if you have a psychic ability as an interrogator if you ask me. But I've been talking too much already lol better let Omega do some explaining...

Perhaps.  I had thought of including that in the list of options but for right now, it might create problems.  Especially if whoever the inquisitor is starts off working for the Ordo Malleus.

@Everyone else.

I am pleased to see so much interest in this RPG.  I will try to address everyone's questions after I've had a nap.  I woke up at 5:56 AM (4 minutes before my blasted alarm was set to go off), drove 160 miles and argued two cases today.  I'm a little drained at the moment.

As to how much knowledge of the lore is expected of you, don't worry about it.  The WH40k universe is large enough where pretty much anything can go.  If anyone does have any questions, feel free to ask me or one of the other WH40k fans on the forum.  I believe there are more than a few of us around.  Additionally, you can access the Lexicanum for more background information.

In the mean time, I would like those who would like to participate to start thinking about their character bios.  Due to the nature of the inquisition, with the exception of Space Marines, everyone has to be human.  Xenos and mutants (naturally) are not tolerated.  Try to think up of character equipment as well.  If you need any help, state which character you would like to play and I will suggest some equipment.  If anybody else would like to make a suggestion, go ahead.

A few more tidbits, for those applying to be an Inquisitor, start thinking of what Ordo you wish to belong to.  For those unfamiliar there are the Ordo Xenos (Alien hunters), Ordo Malleus (Daemon Hunters), and the Ordo Hereticus (Witch/Heretic/Rogue Inquisitor hunters).  For those who want to be psykers (or have access to psyhic abilities), think of one primary psyker talent you would like.  I am not going to follow the codex on that one, so if you want to control water, that's cool.  As to the associated perils with psychic powers, it will depend on your environment.  Carefully monitored use in the materium should be fine.  Going all-out in the Warp = Daemon food.  Finally, for those interested in being a Space Marine, think of which Chapter you would like to represent.  You can make something up if you would like.

Ok, nap time.  I'll catch everyone later.

@Gnomes2169

You can be an assassin.  However, there are a couple of limitations.  I am limiting assassins to Callidus (shape-shifting), Vindicare (sniper) or Death Cult (trained melee killers).  That omits Cullexus and Eversor assassins.  I've omitted the Cullexus because they tend to have bad effects on those around them and their application is limited.  Eversors are a massive liability if they are brought down in a fight, often self-destructing, and when not in combat, you'd be stuck in stasis.

@War-Overlord

It is not uncommon for commissars to work for the inquisition.  In fact, my avatar is the second most aweomse commissar out there.  I have no problem with it.  Just be careful who you execute.

@Meroe

Do not let inexperience deter you.  I welcome everyone to join this RPG.  Do not worry about writing style either.  The only thing I ask is to avoid powergaming like some particular RPG participants we've had in the past.

I wish that my character would employ some unorthodox methods, and have a more interesting occupation than cannon fodder before joining the inquisition. Is it possible?
