So can you really play this game off-line? All the reviews on amazon.co.uk say you have to be online the whole time to play the game.
This review in particular makes it sound like you must have a constant connection to play:
I've really enjoyed playing the game. I've played the previous Heroes games and this stacks up well against them. I wanted to make this review about how I'm enjoying the game; unfortunately it is ruined by the DRM.
Being a fan of the series I decided to buy this in spite of the annoying DRM but now I'm starting to regret that decision. The DRM requires an always on internet connection. As soon as you start the game you are connected to what Ubisoft calls the CONFLUX. Simple enough, I have a stable broadband connection that's always on when the PC is on so no problem right?
Unfortunately the connection to the CONFLUX has dropped several times in the middle of a battle and as soon as you're disconnected from the CONFLUX you're dropped back to the main menu where it usually takes a few minutes to establish a connection again. You can only play the tutorial without being connected, and you can't load your saved games.
This is a good game that's let down by the poor DRM that Ubisoft have implemented. I won't be buying anything else that has the Ubisoft name associated with it, unless it's in the bargain bin.

5 towns is ok for the beginning , have you seen all other games lately? 2,3,4 factions at most
Agreed, I don't understand why people want so many towns. Starcraft has only 3 races and does fine. More races --> more variables --> harder to balance, and harder to keep each town unique.

But I think some creatures needs adding in game: elf, hydra, minotaur....etc.... And, I hope that dark elf/night elf race with its creatures didn't appear. That's Heroes series, not Warcraft.

Ok, I do agree about a few creatures that carry the old HoMMs' nostalgia.. they should probably be there. Some of them will prob be added in the exp packs when they add 2 towns per exp as seems to be the plan.

I wouldn't worry about them-they;ll be back.
And for Urgash's sake, it was a Warhammer rip-off, not a Warcraft one-let's be accurate in our accusations . Personally I'm not against a dark-elf led dungeon and a couple of dark elf units but no more than that.
To the OP: I haven't regretted buying the game so far in the least.

I would like the factions to have 2-4 units of the same race as the dominant race that represents this faction. Ideal would be three. Exceptions should be undead, demons and humans. Humans ofcourse should have more and Undead and Demons are a category of races that are allowed flexibility. Sanctuary has two Naga, this is the minimum so it's good. Stronghold has 3 orcs, which is ideal. I hope the the next factions will follow in the same fashion.
I'm really bored of blunt creatures such as 'Elf', 'Orc', 'Dwarf'. Despite what other people say, I feel it's not creative to just randomly add creatures of different races to the whole as if only humans have the priviledge to learn to fight in different ways.
And for those of you who accuse Heroes V was ripping off Warhammer, true but the previous Heroes were also not that unique either. They were ripping off D&D. This is the way that fantasy settings are, the products of our imagination go to a common pool.

I wholeheartedly agree. I actually preferred the HOMM 5 dungeon to the HOMM2/3 one for that reason-I can't deny that it was too blatant a rip-off though.
