Update:

Embarassingly, I think my problem was user error.  I thought that you had to wait until the necromancer ability was full circle yellow until you used the ability...

Playing it the correct way has greatly boosted my regen ability.  I just started the third map of the necro campaign and I htink it is going to be a different experience.  Actually seems rather easy now...

But won't know for sure until I get to a couple of AI castles.  I'm letting myself explore as I normally would to test whether using all the regen abilites properly makes the difference.

Is it me or Necropolis is overpowered?
I think Ubi should make some balancing changes there...

Right now, yes, because Lich hits way too hard and Necromancy heals way too much. though IMHO Haven is even more broken at the moment in many situations. (because Glorise simply counter mass spell too hard)

right now Sanctuary and Stronghold are roughly balanced, Haven and Necropolis too strong and Inferno too weak.
