"Tanis!" Raistlin's bark held no mirth in it any more. "Let him go, now!" He hadn't thought that she would actually do anything other than slap him around for a few seconds, but the drow looked like she wanted to kill him! Shock had paralized Raistlin for a few seconds, but he growled, "I said. Let. Him. Go!" When Ivor started jerking around, struggling to escape. Raistlin forcefully removed Tanis's hands from Ivor's face by the wrists.

"What is wrong with you?" He hissed in her ear.

On a completely separate notice, it seemed that Ivor was finally awake.

Ivor sprung from sleep with a yell, as he rolled into an icy underground stream.

"Gods be damned!"

After a moments pause, he knelt down; drank and refreshed himself, completely oblivious of his two companions.

“Most didn’t.” Aleron’s head bowed briefly in acknowledgement for the dead; his father, his siblings, retainers whose families had been loyal for decades—all gone.

“But that is neither here nor there. If you can tell the tale, I am curious as to who so badly wanted you and Khalexius dead.” For surely a mountaineer as skilled as his father had claimed this man to be would not have wandered into a den of those things by accident. And the shadow goblins and trolls had seemed far too stupid to be casting spells of concealment…

He shrugs.  "My guess is the same being that is looking for the Crown.  Something, or somebody, has decided that the crown is too dangerous to them..even if guarded by a dragon.  Since dragons will trade if you offer them things double the value of whatever it is you wish..they may be correct.  These shadow creatures are not the only thing blocking my way to the vault to get somethings to trade for that crown.  Many undead and summoned creatures have suddenly found this mountain home."

That got the mage’s attention.

“Crown?” Aleron asked sharply. “Explain further what you mean.”

This couldn’t be coincidence…surely there were not that many magic crowns lying around in the mountains, dragon hoards or no? And with what seemed like half the continent out looking for them at the same time?

"We should be traveling while we talk.  It is a long way to the vault, and time is of the essence." He starts heading toward a cave entrance while talking.  "I am not sure of the particulars, but this crown is supposed to be part of some sort of set.  It is believed that this crown, and the rest of the set, can summon a God to the mortal plane.  A god of goodness and purity.  When times are at their darkest, this set supposedly has been used, and the world saved. I've learned which dragon has this crown, though I am not sure what the crown is called..and it is a lucky thing.  It is a young silver..it could have been worse and it be a black or a red.  At least the Silver will not accept our trade and then eat us and keep everything."

Both Raistlin and Tanis watched as Ivor stumbled sleepily towards the gate.  He looked at it thoughtfully for a long time, causing both Raistlin and Tanis some concern.

Eventually he straightened, mumbled some bizarre language, which to Tanis sounded more like his coughing fits in the morning, mingled with strange gutteral yips.  Ivor stood back, but nothing happened.  He turned to them, a rather bashful look on his face and shrugged. Then a low rumbling could be heard.  Everyone took a step back.

Simultaneously..

In the eternal caves
There is a foul stench in the air as the door opens, the musky scent of a sealed tomb wafts through the air.  The door parts, and inside is a vast room filled with gold, gems, jewels, armor, weapons, and various other items. All very neatly organized, like on display.  Everything looks either valuable or potent..or both.  The only exception are some statues made of stone.  Each is identical, 9 in total.  One in each corner, one about in the middle of each wall, and one in the center of the room.  On the other end of the large room is another door.
Right beside the statue in the middle of the room is a ornate vase, sitting on a pedestal.  The design on it depicts some sort of grave at night under a full moon.

In Dragon Tooth mountain...
From the backpack there comes a dark unearthly 'dark light', and the feeling of foreboding.

As the massive gates open wide a rush of air overwhelms Ivor for a moment, then his eyes reflect the gleam of gold and jewels. Like a magpie, Ivor was enchanted by the vast wealth stored within the vault.(paying little heed to everything else, including the stones)

Ivor saw a a suit of armour adorned with fine-cut gems and glazed in gold and silver; he reached for it with a lively ambition, all in a moment a deathly chill came upon him, and he realised that some things are better left undisturbed.

Ivor overcome by his caution began to inspect the rest of the room in search of clues to the owner or any secret wards placed on the place (id est, curse, traps et cetera)

"I doubt anyone would be foolish enough to leave such a vast treasure unguarded"

No traps are found, either there are none or they are concealed by some magic.  Searching shows no signs of curses, traps, or anything similar.  Neither magic or mundane.  Seems ordinary in every way.  The only thing that seems odd is, there have to be dwarves somewhere near here.  Chances are they have stumbled on this, and knew how to open the room.  Why the goods still remain is a mystery.

That sounded like the Crown of Destiny…but…

Aleron made quick marks in an out-of-the-way spot on one wall—inscribing the code-symbols the escort had used for “battle” and “victory” in case any of the others were forced to trace his footsteps—then dusted off his robes and followed.

“A young silver?” Aleron asked with concern. A question occurred to him and after a moment’s internal debate, he decided he may as well ask it: “How did an artifact with the power to summon a god transpire to land in the hoard of a young dragon?”

He also picked up the pace a little; most people in this region of the world knew dragons only became more powerful as they aged. Logically speaking that meant the guardian of a key to save the world was not very powerful as dragons went, and would be that much easier for the army crawling around the mountains to kill. Aleron was not altruistic even as mages went, but he was practical, and having the Crown snapped up by a hostile force and possibly destroyed would be very bad.

But before the other could answer a dark light emitted from over his shoulder—from his pack! Aleron cursed and flung it off his back as quickly as he could, readying his crossbow on the off chance it would be useful.

Now what?”

The large man stops, looks at the pack, and approaches it.  "Dragons, while they live long lives, do not live forever.  The silver inherited his fathers horde when he passed.  I share your concern, however.  Not much can challenge even a young dragon, but there are some things that can.." he pokes at the pack..opens it and when he sees the scroll curses.

"I should have known, that deep magic had to come from somewhere.  You can put down your weapon..as dangerous as this thing is, it is not something that mortal weapons can harm.  Where did you get it?  Where on earth did you find The End Bringer."

"Deep magic, magic older then this planet.  Older then time perhaps.  It is said that The End Bringer can be for good or ill, bringing about the downfall of whatever hapless world it ends up on..or ushering in a golden age.  Either way, if it is here, it shall be the end of the world as we know it. Since we know that darkness has come to the world, that may be why this thing revealed itself.  For some reason it has chosen you, but that does not mean it will only work for you.  Others around you may get its benefit, or its curse."

He sighs.  "You will be able to influence it..sometimes.  When you feel it activating, and it will as it sees fit, you can nudge it to protective or destructive means.  You just will not be able to influence who or what it affects.  So you might end up giving your enemies powerful protections, or hurting your allies if not careful.  It is an artifact, so getting rid of it will be neigh impossible.  The good news is..it will reveal spells that are not currently known on this world to you.  One a week, a random one of unknown power.  You will be able to copy it to your spell book, and will know what it is and what it does when it is revealed.  Other then that..it will do as it pleases, regardless if it benefits or harms you.  Even the Crown would be more compliant then this."

Raistlin, still invisible, silently padded his way though the treasure room. Making sure not to touch any of the artifacts, gold, or other shiny things, he looked around for any other tunnels, doors, etc that might lead to what they were looking for... also, if he could find it, Raistlin looked around the room for the artifact itself. Maybe they had placed it here?

Something about this room was not right. As if something watched him and all of his companions... the sooner he could leave, the better. Right now, though invisible and sneaking, the hair on the back of his neck tingled, and he felt as though he, personally, was being watched with every step he took. Something was not right... the sooner they left, the better.

Raistlin just hoped that Ivor and Tanis didn't do anything stupid or stubborn in the next few minutes...
