No secret or trap doors, the only door besides the one you entered is the quite visible one on the opposite end of the room.

“Nothing to be done about it now in any case.” Aleron stuffed the End Bringer unceremoniously back into his pack and made a note to experiment with it when they took a chance to rest.

Dragon Tooth Mountain (Where The WALKER is)

It is about a day later in the Dragon Tooth mountains.  The journey has been pretty boring since the shadow creatures attack.  Within reach of the vault now, however, the area is suddenly crawling with undead and other creatures.

The worst is at the door of the vault, a robed figure is chanting at the vault door, trying to open it.  The figure does not seem to notice that they are being watched.

Tanis was the last to enter the vast room.  The riches, jewels and glistening gold didn't interest her at all. She felt highly uncomfortable and the strange smell made her feel even more uneasy.

She watched Raistlin creep silently around the edges of the room, his nervousness palpable.  Ivor on the other hand was totally immersed in the huge pile of gold in front of him.

Tanis felt a breeze and turned towards it.  A faint light like a weak halo appeared around the edge of an almost invisible door at the far end of the room.  Tanis dropped to a crouch, yanking Ivor down with her and glanced at Raistlin's direction, hoping he too had seen it.

((Remember, there aren't any doors besides the main door and the door leading further in))

Raistlin's words of invisibility still held and he was thankful for that when he heard the sound of Tanis pulling Ivor down. It would at least give the man some form of protection against things that tried to come and eat, stab or otherwise kill him. The thief might be the most vulnerable one of the trio normally, and the fact that he still had a hangover wouldn't be doing him any favors either...

With trepidation, Raistlin moves to, and opens, the large door at the end of the room.

The other door moves reluctantly opens, rusted with age, having been unused for who knows how long.  On the other side of the door..

The room is absolutely stunningly beautiful.  A pale blue light suffuses the room, from some odd colored lichen on the walls, and amplified by the crystalline structure of the room.  The sound of water flowing echoes across the distance, as if some waterfall or spring is nearby.  The sounds of movement can be heard, then voices.

"Why we have to go long way boss?" A rather large lumbering figure, holding a torch follows a man in a dark robe.  Beside him two other large brutes, easily 8' tall each..badly mishapen..dressed in just loin cloths.

"The other one was too near a town you oaf, and I've heard some bad things about it anyhow.  We should be way ahead of those other fools, it will take them a week to open the door..and the idiots will probably disturb something in the chamber..and we will not have to worry about them any." he practically sneers. "We have to hurry, we have to meet the others before nightfall."

One of the big brutes shudders. "Bone face make Larg scared."

"Good, because only an idiot wouldn't be." replies the man.  "Death Knights are not to be trifled with."

They are moving away from the group, toward one of three tunnels, they seem to have come from another tunnel to the side.

Floating behind the group, as if pets, come two beholders.

That night, Aleron settled down by the campfire and brought out the End Bringer again. Figuring his first order of business was to determine if the thing was ‘cursed’ in the sense that it couldn’t be gotten rid of, he first cast Identify. When that unsurprisingly did not work ((spell description says it doesn’t work on artifacts—unless Mr. Walker lied to me and it’s really a scroll of Cure Light Wounds with a sense of drama )) he buried it under some rubble and walked away. Every ten paces or so he stopped and checked his pack, pouches, and the surrounding area—anywhere it could conceivably have gotten to—to see if it had ‘followed’ him.

So far the scroll is still unreadable, so if it does reveal secrets..it is not ready to yet...((You are correct that no spells will ever identify it as anything other then a normal scroll one might write a letter on except that detect magic does show it to have magic)).

It takes about 500 feet before the scroll does indeed end up in the backpack...but it is sitting in the backpack as if it has always been there.

The air was deadly still, and darkness flowed abundantly in the room, only eyes of the beholders could be seen penetrating the darkness searching for their prey.

Ivor breathed heavily, then reached into his tunic and slowly pulled out a long concealed pipe, then he searched for some tobacco finally finding some craftily concealed in his boots (which he removed, but also alerted the beholders) It was sheer luck that they chose to investigate rather then tear the place asunder. Ivor now silently padded himself for some matches, finding some in his breeches (dropping some which Tanis watched with anguish, Raistlin aswell, he was invisible but Ivor could feel it ^^)

Ivor struck the matches.

Instantly all was engulfed in flame and Ivor was promtly flung out the door for another swim in his stream (which was considerably deeper then he thought, now that he's in it though it did not save him from the burns)

Tanis barely had time to turn and send herself head long into a pile of gold coins before being engulfed in flame.  The tremendous WHOOOSH almost left her shell shocked.

She emerged immediately, the smell of singed human ranger thick in the air.  Tanis heard the bellow of the beholders and sprang towards the door.  "Raistlin!!!" she screamed as she ran head first towards the entrance, "RUN!!!!".

She threw herself through the door, just as a beholder let out a ray of antimagic, narrowly missing Tanis.  She  hit the ground hard and winded herself.  She could see Ivor, his arms flaying as though he was drowning ... and at that precise second that was exactly what she wished for him, followed quickly by the thought of actually holding him under the water herself.

Aleron took out the End Bringer again and examined it, pleased. This had potential, though it did mean he wasn’t going to have the option of foisting it off on the dragon. That was probably for the best anyway; with an army hunting for him, odds were the Silver wouldn’t last out the year, and that would leave the scroll in the hands of the enemy. Temperamental or not, leaving a powerful magic item to them was unlikely to be a wise course of action.

Now curious as to how far it extended, Aleron tore a small scrap of parchment off one of his spare sheets and made a mark on it, then rolled it into the End Bringer and repeated the previous experiment except this time heading back to camp. When he reached the end of the short trip, he took out the artifact and unrolled it to see if the scrap had come with it.

((Regardless of the outcome…))

Deciding that that was enough experimentation for the time being, Aleron cast Secret Page on the scroll to cover the unreadable script with the seeming of an incredibly sappy love poem addressed to Tanis—she being the only other fully-fledged arcanist remaining of the entourage, if the trip ended in failure and the others found it on his corpse that would hopefully be sufficient to draw her attention. Raistlin might be able to make sense of it as well, having some skill with illusions, but then Aleron suspected he would happily raid his belongings without any sort of prompting…

((I was going to do something at the vault too, but I’ll wait for an answer to my question in the OoC thread first.))

Aleron and Dragon Tooth Mountain

The scrap does not come with the scroll.  ((If you look for it, it will be where you left the scroll))..so apparently it will not bring things with it.  Which explains why despite being on the ground the scroll was not dirty.

Eternal Caves ((Where Meroe, Gnomes, Ivor are))

The man, startled by the fire and ruckus hurries the ogres along, and looks back to the Beholders "Stop them!" The Beholders, confused take awhile to respond, but the guy does not notice in his haste to retreat.

((The group has 2 free actions before the beholders will respond..don't count on invisibility though..beholders have access to powerful magic))

((EDIT: All better. ))

((At camp: ))

Aleron noticed the scrap had failed to accompany the scroll and shrugged. It would have been useful, but he was certain he could make use of what he already knew…

((Next day, outside the vault: ))

Aleron observed the man in the cloak from his hiding spot. ((I’m assuming we HAVE a hiding space, and didn’t just waltz in with trumpets sounding. )) That he was alone was worrying; it meant he felt confident enough to be here with no guards, suggesting he was powerful. And he almost certainly wouldn’t have made it past the hostile army crawling through the mountains unless he was a part of it. Still, maybe this was someone that could give them information…if not, there were alternatives he could pursue, depending on which patrols were nearby.

((Have we seen any distinguishing markings on the groups of monsters roaming around? Coat of arms etc? Any individuals I could disguise myself as? Or—hmmm…what monster patrols do I know are nearby? (How many, what kind?)))

Beholders. Uh-oh. Invisibility was nice and all, but that wouldn't help in the slightest. As it was, they had their backs turned to him... Raistlin fired his pre-loaded crossbow at an eyestalk of one of them and sent a lightning bolt streaking through another before they had turned (getting in backstab on the crossbow shot and just a free spell in on the bolt). and then he jumped behind the doorway and drew two small daggers that had been purchased at the town before the expedition. Ivor should not have been brought along... however puppy-like he was. (( Tsar, it was just a few ogers and a death knight before... ))

Tanis heard the firing of Raistlin's crossbow and jumped to her feet.  She peered around the door.  The last thing she and this group needed was her getting hit with antimagic.  However the beholders were now spinning in Raistlins direction.  Tanis jumped at the opportunity and cast Wall of Ice .. totally encasing the two beholders in an ice prison.  She yelled through the door at the retreating Raistlin, "it won't hold them forever, move your ass!!!".

Ivor rising from the 'pool' drenched, was immediately drawn to the present danger he began to sprint at the injured beholder, removing his soaked tunic as he did so revealing his shining mail (which no doubt was immediately noticed by the beholders) Before he could be incinerated Ivor tossed his tunic at the behoilder's tenticles.

It let out a piercing screech, though it must've been extremely painful it didn't actually do much damage, but it paralysed it for long enough for Ivor to deal the killing blow. He drew his blade and readied it to pierce the eye (the big one ) as he did so his sword began to tremble and moments later it shattered sending shards flying. Ivor without hesitation, (inside he was reluctant to do so) snatched up a shard and like lightning embedded it in the eye.

He rolled out of the way f the missiles of the other beholder that went flying and hit the cripled beholder, who exploaded from the impact. Ivor barely surviving hid behind a pile of gold to nurse his wounds (his hands was cut from the shard of the blade) and remove shards that are struck his mail.

As Ivor practically somersaulted over the pile of gold, with the remaining Beholder's attention firmly on him, Tanis ran through the door and cast Electric Bolt, immediately followed by three Magic Missles.  All four spells hit their target and the Beholder, letting out a piercing scream hit the floor.

"He's almost finished!!", yelled Tanis.

Raistlin had casted haste when Tanis made the wall of ice, which is why Ivor hadn't been blown up into 30+ tiny little bits before he arrived at the beholders. Ivor's distraction had given Raistlin enough time to get behind the living beholder and then... well:

As both daggers embedded themselves in the beholder's skull, and another crossbow bolt, Raistlin called back, "It is finished."
