Having Finished the Campaigns..

I have mixed feelings. Some were a lot of fun, others painfully boring. The one thing I just have a hard time accepting is that H6 will not allow you to play at your own pace. You play slowly? You may seriously overpower an opponent through sheer army numbers. You play fast as is my preference? You will either be punished for it or or you'll end up ending turns to finish the final opponent with the ridiculously big army. In fact I was turned off by the epic scope of battles, how many throngs and swarms of core/elites can you kill before you get bored? How many heroes with epic armies will you carefully take down with minimal army before you say screw that and start ending turns to finish them with superior forces? It all feels so unnatural. And unfortunately the bosses are afflicted by the same weakness - not knowing when is the right time to take them on you will either encounter them early with an insufficient army or your army will be so high that they will be a pushover. I wish that a script would adjust your army before attacking a boss, that the boss scaled in strength accordingly or that you could meet it approximately when your army was about enough to challenge it. Also.. I rather miss those fast-paced maps that are short but full of excitement, in big maps you eventually end up searching for that last opponent, a crucial quest or wasting your time on epic neutrals that take minutes to kill for +1 defense or something.

Finally, while the missions are more personal in the final missions things suddenly become.. generic. You will either go on a witch hunt or try to preserve the balance and just kill anyone on your way, no questions asked, no special dialogues, no nothing. Cate or Michael may spare you a few words and that's it. Even the ending is about the same. At least the maps were challenging to an extent but I grew rather tired of both, blood because of all those epic battles and tears because I kept killing haven forces from beginning till end. Not enough variation.

What are your impressions? Did you enjoy the campaigns? Did you have any complaints or suggestions for improvement?

I never saw it as punishing you for playing fast. It's harder to push through the armies and bosses when you fly through it, but that's how you get the high score, if you at all care about it. You can sit around forever but you won't get a high score.

The final mission was somewhat disappointing, both because there was so little dialogue to it and because the authors were clearly biased in their own story. They claim that the system of blood and tears wasn't suppose to represent good and evil, but it was so obvious that they wanted to make Cate look like the heroine in her stupid Power Rangers outfit.

(SPOILER)The only part that was sort of cool is when you choose tears for Anton and he fights Michael at the end. They have this discussion where they compliment each other and regret that it had to come to this, and Michael says how if he's going to die, it's an honor to die by Anton's hand. The dialogue sort of gave me the chills. I wish they had more stuff like that.

Likewise. In a similar way..

(SPOILERS!)

I hated how Ishtvan was discarded like a simple obstacle in your path, no witty lines, he just appears there waiting for you to defeat him. A shame because I loved that guy Or how Cate just.. dies in the tears path. Did I miss something? Was the ritual too much for her? If it was mentioned it must have been so brief that I overlooked it and that sucks. This story had so much tragic potential but failed to evoke emotion in the very end, where it was supposed to reward you for playing through all these long missions.

I can't find a proper mood to finish the Stronghold campaign which is the second one for me. Even though there are a few semi-successful attempts to create a humorous atmosphere (in the dark, gloomy Ashan...), so far Goink pisses me off too much, Sandor is just as predictable as Anton and his whole campaign is "kill whatever stands in the way, the reasons are not so important". Maybe when I have a lot of free time, feel totally bored and don't want to read some book instead...
The Haven campaign is... unimpressive. All hopes that something original can come out of it died at the beginning and stayed dead to the end. There were a few good fights during the second and the third mission but otherwise all you did was to run around.
The things I've read about the Sanctuary campaign will probably keep me away from it for quite some time as I'm willing to believe them following my bad impressions from their first mission in the beta.
I have some hopes about the Necropolis and the Inferno campaigns but I'm not expecting any miracles. So far the only really good thing about the whole mess story-wise and story-telling-wise is that it's better than Heroes V... which is not hard at all even for amateurs. The gameplay part is pretty shallow and easy but the latter is because if the stupid AI.

I hated the running around part, especially in haven last mission. So much time wasted searching for enemy towns, simply too many paths..

It was ok, the story didnt suck even though if it were me creating the story I would find proper ways of mindraping the players, it just seemed a bit monotonic and boring at times, to me but I would be lying if I were to say I suffered through the game, all in all they brought in some new things which fit well, once they drop the expensions (btw any news on that ?) it will be a really nice game.

Stronghold was the hardest to me but then again maybe it was due to the fact that I started with them, afterwards it was a walk in a park, so there needs to be something above "hard".

Characters were slightly weak personality wise, I would play with them much more, every game needs more kinky and crazy IMO....

Voicing needs adjusting, as lovely as Irina sounds others didnt do such a great job.. It was her voice right ??

I dont understand why is everybody hating on the game though

Are there any mods being created ?

I've completed 4 of the 5 campaigns, with Inferno being the last one.

I generally kind of agree with you Elvin, but I'm not a big campaign person to begin with.  Even though I'm far along I find myself confused by parts of the storyline, and who is who.

The Irina character could not have been more annoying to me.  I found myself hoping the enemy would somehow kill her lol.

I kind of enjoyed that.  It wasn't a straight lineal map, and it created a feeling of peril when you explored.

@smithey
Oh I certainly didn't suffer, it was an enjoyable experience for the most part. One that will only get more complete once I replay them under a different reputation, I just had higher expectations on a few things. Have to agree with you otherwise.

@mike
Sure, I love exploration. But when it comes to solidifying your position and knowing that no incoming force can ever threaten you, it is simply boring to search the whole map to see where you should be headed. I rather liked Irina myself though she didn't show many parts of her personality. At times her character felt rather.. forced.

Every comment from Irina was cheesy, obnoxious, arrogant, snowy, sarcastic, and immature.

In some ways she seems to me how I imagine Europeans perceive Americans to be lol.

And Elvin, I don't like the idea of knowing that my fort can't be threatened.  Sure it gives me peace of mind, but it doesn't add suspense.  It wasn't like there were a lot of wrong directions to go on that map.. just conquer what you find!

Well, what do you expect a young princess to be, after she was ordered into marrying someone she despises, got raped, jailed after she tried to punish the guy then forced to flee into exile, finding out she was pregnant.
Jesus' younger sister?

From Map design. My favorite campaign is Stronghold. It has interesting maps, and the fact that there were no Crystal mines on map 3 was also nice.

If I woudl to talk about the Final two maps I would have to say they were unnecessary.
I rather liked the Tears path, due to the fact that you could rush as well as move slowly towards your enemy. But on the other hand, it was really easy, especialy for Haven.
The Blood map on the other hand was to long and repetitive. Approximately in its half (when meeting J***) I realised how the map was boring to me (played it with Irina)

A summary of my highlights in each Campaign
Stronghold-> none particular
Inferno-> Battle with A**** in map one
Heven-> When Faceless are unmasked (J*** and M***)
Necropolis-> Map 2 (it si different in game style than the rest)
Sanctuary-> Irina found out she is pregnant

My favorite Characters
Faceless as Faceless
Azkall
Goink

The stories of the main protagonists are mediocre (still better then H5). The Background war is a very nice topic. There is little focus on it if you do not pay attention but the Idea which the angels had and what they had done with it is a good plot base (To bad Good foundations are not a garantee of a good building)

Restarted Sandor's campaign to go for blood and I get the feeling that the game was supposed to be played in normal.. Stacks are reasonable as opposed to irritatingly strong, there are decent opportunities to gain reputation from fleeing stacks and the enemy crossbowmen are not holed up in the tower, making the quest to capture all towns fairly doable. Of course knowing the map layout and how to better handle Sandor's skills and army things were bound to be a lot easier than the first time but.. the game is just more enjoyable on normal. Much less time wasted on huge stacks or using exploits to defeat enemies with crazy forces with little to no casualties so you get to actually enjoy the map.

Of course.. AI on normal is piss poor. Shame I cannot keep the AI on hard and simply have stacks grow at a normal pace.

It's funny you should mention this.  The first two campaigns I played, Stronghold then Haven, were set on Normal difficulty.  In the Stronghold campaign I didn't know much about leveling the dynasty weapons and was trying to do each map as quickly as possible.  As a result it worked out perfectly and was a lot of fun.  Map 3 in particular was enjoyable.

I have finished the Naga, Orc and on 3rd map of Demon campaigns. So far, the demon maps have been the most exciting, starting in Sheogh and then on map 2 with the big green flourescent abysses and cliff sides looked visually pleasing.

As far as difficulty goes (on hard), I haven't broken a sweat and it's been fairly easy getting through each campaign mission. I remember Heroes 5 having some hectic maps that I had to start again to do it properly in order to finish the map....

I feel the Heroes VI campaigns are great but could have that element of "not sure if I can do this" feeling...it's too easy.
