The food supplies reminded Rincewind that he hasn't eaten since morning. He sat there munching on biscuits for a while. He needed a better distraction. Something that would get everyone's attention. He looked around. His eyes fell on the barrels of pitch. He sighed. The first time he'd been close to a big fire, he started his first adventure. Why did history had to go and repeat it itself all the time?

Rincewind took some sailcloth and covered it in pitch. Then he lay it out away from the rest of the flammable stuff. He wanted a distraction, not a destruction of the whole ship. Then he looked and his work expectantly. It looked backed at him and sagged. Rincewind knew that there are ways of starting a fire without a match, but he never bothered to learn them. He remembered steel and striking being involved somehow. He took out his daggers and looked at them. They didn't look promising, but he didn't have a better idea at the moment. He slid one blade on another trying to create as much friction as possible and wished he has a way to cross his fingers while holding the daggers.

Tristan:

You make it out of the inn without incident, though the guards at the door give you beady stares on your way out.

----------------

Rincewind:

You are utterly unsuccessful at drawing sparks from your paired daggers. The light from a nearby lantern flickers dimly over the pitch and sailcloth mess before you, casting shadows and filling the air with the scent of smoke, but nary a spark of your own leaps onto the pitch.

Disillusioned yet not surprised Rincewind straightened up.

"OW!", he let out a cry as he hit his head on something. Then he watched as the lantern he accidentally hit fell down and exploded in a pool of fire right onto the mess of pitch and sailcloth beneath him.

"Oh... bugger."

Rincewind ran out of the hold bumped into one of the sailors and cried while pointing at the red light emitting from the downstairs.

"There's a fire over there! Help! We need water!"

He proceeded running around the ship, alerting everyone to the fire and trying to create as much commotion as possible.

Rincewind:

You succeed in making a great deal of commotion...so much in fact that soon the crew of the Turquoise Bay and the handful of people at the docks on other business have formed bucket crews to put out the rapidly spreading fire. The guards posted at the captain's cabin look at each other and hesitate, then join the fire brigade.

----------------

Mat and Broďndur:

((*poke*))

The skeleton with the rope hurts Broďndur's wrist badly enough that he loses his grip on the axe. The undead, its previous weapon still tangled around the axe, then releases his arm to claw at Broďndur's face with its now-free hand.

Mat, meanwhile, gets a solid thunk on the head from the quarterstaff-wielding skeleton. Both undead manage to make their way down, and the one with the hammer takes a swing at his belly. Another set of boney feet appear at the top of the ladder.

Rincewind took a few moments alerting everyone he could find. When the guards finally left their place, he moved with the look of someone who knows exactly where they're going and made his way to the cabin. He glanced around quickly to check that no one, including the guy in the bird's nest, was watching and (provided no one was) dove into the quarters closing the door behind him.

Mat, not particularly wanting to get whacked, stabbed or otherwise mauled in many nasty ways, rolled to the side and curled up his legs, uncoiling to spring at the skeleton that Broindur was fighting. Unfortunately, he didn't realize that he was jumping back in to the ship hold that he had just come out of. Fortunately, he landed on the skeleton. Unfortunately, the skeleton exploded once he landed on it, and skeletons don't make the best of landing surfaces anyway...

"... Ow." Was all that the ranger could wheeze, laying on his belly amidst bits of bone.

Mat makes it behind Broďndur and the skeletons remaining focus on the Dwarf-turned-Orc instead. The pair in shadows at the top of the ladder have made their way down now, making four; the newcomers wield a net and a pair of daggers respectively. The skeleton with the hammer and the quarterstaff-wielding skeleton, in the mean time, take swings until one slams Broďndur in the jaw with its weapon, producing a loud crack and dropping him unconscious. ((And thereby rendering the writer's block moot. ))

Rincewind dove into the chaos of people again, carrying buckets of water from place to place. He used it to run around the cabin once or twice in hopes that he would find another way in.

Rincewind runs to the damaged window. He is too pissed and tired at this point to check if someone watches him and relies on the general chaos around him. He reaches in, thankful for the fact that he is wearing a lot of leather which should protect him from minor cuts, and tries to open the window from inside.

Apparently the ship's carpenter spent a little too much effort on gilding and not enough on solid craftsmanship. Either that or the good Duke hired cheap labor. Regardless, with a little work the window comes open.

Inside you can see a desk right under the window, some papers, a seal, quill, ink, and against the far wall you can dimly make out a ludicrously opulent canopied bed. The rest of the chamber is out of immediate sight.

Rincewind glanced at the table. There didn't seem to be anything in the way of leverage, except perhaps the papers, but going through while still outside on the deck was too risky even in this commotion. He opened the window as wide as he could and climbed in trying to avoid touching any of the things on the table below him. Doing such things in leather armor instead of a robe proved to be much easier. When inside he inspected the room more closely.

I am within a book store, looking over a few books that I have been considering purchasing for a while. I move from one aisle to the next and back again, to see if there are any others that might stand out as well. I reach for one, taking it from the shelf. It falls to the floor, as do I.

Suddenly I am surrounded by lots of water, on all sides. I manage to rise to the surface, but with great struggle. Luckily it was not a great distance up, as I am not a very great swimmer. I slowly make it to a bit of nearby driftwood. It looked big enough.

Looking around, I am totally confused. Was the bookstore a dream? Is this a dream? It certainly doesn't feel like it. Where am I? How did I get here? I certainly didn't come here myself, so who brought me here? How do they benefit from me being here? Why am I wearing these weapons?

As several questions come to mind, I drift around. I check for my phone, just in case it might still work, but find I don’t have it. I eventually turn to see a ship coming my way. It looks very large, and very old, though new. A line is dropped as it slowly passes by. They called for me to take it, which I did after a moment of hesitation. They pulled me up, with me falling to the deck at the end.

"Thank you," I say, lifting myself to my knees and then lift my head, only to find swords pointing my way. That was certainly worrying, but beyond the swords, I see some people roughly double my size. I look down, at myself, and then back, to the side of the ship I just came over. "What?" I say softly, confusion continuing to get the better of me. "Am I a..." The first thought of mine was that I had returned to becoming a child, roughly five or six years old. That thought was interrupted by the crew.

“You, stand.” After slowly rising to my feet, I am handed a piece of cloth, and a bucket. “A generous payment for saving you, wouldn’t you think?” The man motions across the deck of the ship. I could have guessed that this was the meaning, but didn’t voice my thoughts. I knelt down and began cleaning, but was interrupted again. “We’ll be taking these too. You won’t be needing them for this.” The man took the weapons I carried, giving them to someone else to take away.

About an hour into my cleaning, I am interrupted a third time. Should I be doing something else, outside this situation, I might be annoyed. However, as I am as I am, I figure it is a welcome break. I stop scrubbing the deck, and look up to the man. He is a strong-looking man, with a nearly clean shaven face. He extends a hand, which I hesitate in taking. He pulls me up, leaving me feeling like I was about to lose my own hand, or even the whole arm.

“Sorry about that. Not used to you small ones,” he said with a chuckle. I rub my arm, trying to get the proper feeling in it again. “Anyway, I didn’t come to remove any limbs. I just thought, since we have you here, we may as well see how good you are. Maybe we will have a permanent place for you. Here,” he says, extending the dagger that was taken from me earlier.

I look over the dagger, then to the man. “Permanent place? Here? What are you talking about?”

“You know. Become a part of the crew. Now, get ready.”

I don’t know what he is talking about. Become a part of the crew? A child? Am I a child? I have no idea. I move my hands around, forgetting I have the dagger in hand. The man pulls his sword, and swats the knife from my fingers. I wince as said fingers twist a little in a way they aren’t supposed to.

“Sorry, but with skills like that, you don’t stand a chance. Aren’t you supposed to be one of those small but quick types? Ah whatever. Let’s try that again.” The man fetches the dagger for me, and we ‘spar’ again, with similar results. This time, however, I let the dagger fly free of my hand, rather than be twisted from it.

“You don’t seem to know how to use that thing very well. I am not sure why you have it, but maybe it’s not for you. Anyway, I wanted to test you before we welcomed you to the crew. It doesn’t look like you will be however. Once we land, it seems you will be set free of service.”

The man sits down on the deck, and motions for me to do the same. I do so, feeling I shouldn’t insult this man who could obviously destroy me in a sword fight. Likely any other type of fight as well.

“Where are we? Where are we going?”

“Oh, the ship we’re on belongs to One-Eye Xavier. The Empire of the Endless Ocean. We’re going to some island. There’s a contest being held there. A hunt of some sort. Scavenger, I think. Xavier knows more. Though, since you will be free of service here, you won’t be able to travel with us off the island. Winning that hunt may be your only way off the island, outside of years of work, gathering the money to pay for transport otherwise.”

Winning some contest may be my only way off the island? That sounded extremely odd, and worrying. Was the contest really my only option of a quick way home?

The man notices the look on my face, and pats me on the back. “We’ll give you your belongings back. They may help you win. Though, with the way you used your dagger, I would say n… Sorry. I’ll go find something else to do now. We’ll be arriving at the island within the next hour.” The man goes off, collects the dagger, and leaves me to resume cleaning.

Not very long later, the ship reaches the dock. As was told, I am set free of service. The man who tested me was the one to escort me from the ship. He handed me the weapons they had taken previously, and sent me on my way.

I start heading into the populated portion of this island, and look around. I see buildings that match the fashion of the ship; old, but fairly new. The ship looked as though it was built with better or newer wood, so it didn’t look as though it was in as bad a condition as some of these buildings. However, as I look around, I see all the various races roaming around.

“What, did someone feel the need to secret me away to a LARPing convention?” I ask more to myself than anyone else. Outside of media, I have only seen LARPing played out once or twice in my life. These looked far more advanced than I would expect.

I move on, and ask someone if I could use their phone. They give me a puzzled look and walk away. I do this a couple more times, with the same result. The last couple people I attempt to ask, I hear them conversing about some dragonflies causing some trouble. I assume they’re normal dragonflies. Maybe they’re getting into food or something. I ask the people about a phone, and they look to each other with a shrug.

“Perhaps you need a drink to clear your head. There’s the inn over there,” one of them says, pointing to a nearby structure.

With a great deal of frustration, I head over to the inn. I can hear a bunch of ruckus coming from within. A few people come falling out, soon to get up and head straight back in. Several other adult people come crowding to the entrance. I work myself away from the inn, not wanting to be smothered by the lot of onlookers.

After my escape of that situation, I wandered around some more. Blacksmith, houses, and a church. These LARPers went all out. Maybe I’ll see what I can do about joining this hunt. Maybe we can all go home once it is all over. I find someone, and ask about the hunt. I am directed to the town hall.

Upon reaching the town hall, and am shown to the man I am supposed to register with, I ask to join the hunt. Since I didn’t ask about the hunt, the man assumes I know enough about the details that he doesn’t need to explain it in great detail. He just tells me to show outside at noon. He gives me a sheet to sign for registry. Since I’m in a place full of LARPers, I decide to come up with a suitable name. One name came to mind. One of my favorite characters from one of the many RPG’s I had participated in, that kind of fit my situation.

Belaver

Having time to wait, I head back to the docks, and then follow the shore to a nice beach area. I sit and think about what has been happening. I think about how much this is the strangest day I have ever lived through. The thought of this being a dream still lingered, but I didn’t seem to be able to do anything out of the ordinary, like I might be able to do in a lucid dream state. Time passed as my thoughts did the same. Soon I was brought out of thought by the commotion of people moving about behind me. I look back, and see people heading to the town hall. It must be noon.

I make my way over to the town hall, arriving five or so seconds after the meeting starts. I hear muffled voices upon approach, and then it clears up.

“...you will retrieve seven items from on and around the island, and bring them to Judge Thomas"

“Judge Thomas? That name sounds a little familiar.”

The man continues, and the name ‘Harmondale’ is mentioned. I am totally in shock. I stand around in a daze, just staring ahead, my mouth hanging slightly open. I miss the entire list as they are being spoken out. I finally regain my thoughts, as the last item is called out. That wasn’t right. The fact that there will be lists for people who want them was of benefit.

After it was time to collect a list from the scribe, I do indeed collect one. I am bumped into be some redheaded man, though only lightly. He didn’t seem to notice. I look over the list, seeing that very few of the items were the same.

“What is going on? These aren’t the…” I receive looks from the people around me, and get the urge to not continue my thought.

I walk around some more. The layout of this island wasn’t as I remembered it. Though, at least I knew where I was. I still didn’t know why or how though. I thought about the day so far, and none of it seemed to fit. However, staying on Emerald Island did not seem to be the most ideal thing to do.

“Dragonflies… Well, they aren’t what I’m used to, but now I know what they are. I suppose I’m going to have to go hunt some down for some…experience? Am I going to gain levels or something? And…” I check my weaponry. “Am I supposed to be an archer, or a rogue? And why am I so small? I’m too small for a dwarf, and the other three race options are taller than…” I look around, seeing more people looking at me strangely. “Stop looking at me!”

I run off. I figure I may as well start my adventure off as I had started off a number of parties off; hunting dragonflies. I took the bow in hand as I got northwest of the village, and looked around for the flies. They didn’t seem to be clustered in the area I was so used to them being in. In the distance, I notice three of the little things. I draw an arrow back, and launch it. A near miss, the arrow gets stuck in a tree just beyond them. Luckily this wasn’t my first time firing a bow, however, and the second shot goes straight through one of them as they make their way towards me. I manage to shoot one more, getting it through the head, but the third gets to me.  I try to aim my bow at it, and avoid its bites, but it is flying all over the place, I can’t aim properly. I try to put the bow away, and draw the dagger, but am totally uncoordinated. I receive a nasty bite from the creature on the arm holding my bow, which causes me to drop it and the arrow. It hurts. This pain is far worse than playing the game. I realize now, I could use some help. I get the dagger out, and get an extremely lucky strike on the dragonfly, it falling dead at my feet. I shake the fly from the dagger, collect the bow and arrow, and head back to the village.

I go through the town asking random people if they would think the idea of forming a party with me would be of any desire to them. This takes me well into the night, receiving rejection after rejection, until about midnight. I am extremely tired, and I notice someone(Fandral) exiting the inn. Someone I have yet to ask. I walk over to the man.

“Excuse me, but would you happen to want to join me in this scavenger hunt? It might be easier for the both of us if we joined forces.”
