The novelty of the monk soon wore off, and Yu once again began looking for something to focus on. Which is why he noticed the travel-weary, tangle haired girl that stumbled from the bushes. He didn't know whether to laugh at or pity the poor creature. For one, her appearance was rather comical, obviously a nord of some higher social standing smeared with mud, dirt, sweat and the effects of hard travel without any real food, from the growl of her stomach. On the other hand, she appeared to be rather weary and if that growl could be heard all the way over here...

"Squirrel girl." He called to her, since she did look much like a wild little squirrel, all thin and dirty as she was, "I have some food here, if you want it." As an Argonian, he had taken a bit more of the roasted meat than any of his other companions (Ok, almost a second helping. But these silk-skins ate so little that there was no shame in picking up the slack for them...), and he was willing to share some. A bit. Maybe a bite or two. It had been a hard day of travel, and Yu needed to keep up his strength. This sword was rather heavy, you know. Made completely of steel...

Drystan knew that he could trust the Blind Moth Priest not to attack them without good cause, but this new wild girl that had just stumbled into the camp was different. Yu seemed to take her in and feed her some of his massive helpings of food, but Drystan could not take in everyone that came along on the road.

"We will travel with her as far as Whiterun, but we cannot take on so many travelers." said Drystan to the group. "I've dealt with the Blind Moth Priests before in the Imperial City, so I know I can trust this one  to not have malicious intent, but as far as the traveling beggars go, I cannot possibly take on so many. Unless she has a certain skill that would be of great use to us, there is no reason to keep her with us longer than necessary."

Squirrel girl.  Another slur was added to the endless barrage of mockery she received.  Normally she will cry about it but being accustomed to these instances adding the hunger she has been experiencing, Sophia slowly extended her trembling hands onto the arrogant Argonian’s offer.

“Thank you.” She humbly replied.

She sat herself on a flat rock she found near the camp and munched hastily like a hungry bear on the roasted mutton while looking at the Argonian, keenly scrutinizing him from head to toe.  Generally, those hard- scary looking scales of these kin gave her a shiver and their hideous sharp teeth frightened her even to her sleep.  But this was not the time for those little farm girl’s attitude to surface.  An empty stomach made her forget everything but survival.

You nodded courteously, somewhat regretting that she was eating his food. "You're welcome, little lady. Why is it a girl like you is so far from home? Have problems with your mother and father, did we? Or maybe a boy?" Yuan-Ta chuckled at that, "If you were clean, I'm sure you would certainly be pretty enough by pink-skin standards to be married off by your parents to a lucky suitor or two."

After listening to Drystan's announcement, the Argonian added the question, "And can you do anything to help us with our adventure here? Any skills that would make you worth the food you are eating?" While he wouldn't take it back from her, the poor girl was starved already, he wouldn't let her stay if she turned out to be just another worthless beggar.

Sophia wondered if she would be happy with a filled stomach or frown since it gave her back the consciousness she had lost for quite some time that made her remember her miseries as the snake-like creature questioned her.

Hiding her past to the stranger but seeing an opportunity to continue her quest she answered the last query quickly, “I can do anything!”

“Wait!”, she held back as she remembered that the phrase ‘do anything’ can mean different to each individual and moreover to the abusive ones, ”I mean… I can cook! Hunt a little… do laundry?”

She tucked her head down as she realized she was not making any sense seeing the group were not impressed by her answer.

Yu's gaze was not amused. "I meant something that might be useful in battle, little girl. We have cooks and cleaners, what we need are mages and warriors, not little trophy wives to pamper us." So maybe the Argonian wasn't the nicest of all people... "If that is all you can do, then you do not have a place beside our fire after tonight and you should leave in the morning." He began to turn away, sorry to have wasted his time and food on this girl...

“Wait, Sir!”, Sophia rose from her seat as she addressed the proud Argonian.  The word ‘battle’ awakened her senses and inspired her spirit.

“I can cast a spell”, she looked at him with unwavering eyes.

The argonian sighed, it was probably some parlor trick where she summoned a few dazzling lights that were supposed to enthrall her audience or some such nonsense. "Fine, fine." He hissed, turning back with a somewhat-bored expression as he let Noxa measure his right arm and he drank from his wineskin with his other, "Let's see this 'Spell' of yours and be done with it." He did not sound impressed.

Upon hearing his last word, Sophia focused her mind as she slowly raised her left hand.  Within seconds, crimson fires enveloped her fingers.  She clutched them first and held them close, and then she pointed it on the rock where she sat.   As her fingers spread, burst of hot flames went out from her hand towards the rock.

She smiled as the flames gleamed on her lovely dark-brown eyes.  Casting this spell was one of few things she considered that happened best to her life.

Yu almost choked on his wine, and he did choke on his words. "Oh bountiful employer..." The argonian managed to cough out, "I think that this one is a keeper." To the girl, he asked, "What is your name, squirrel?" When he said it, the name seemed to be more friendly and less derogation than it should. This might be because Yu actually liked the little rodents, but that was a different matter all together.

“Sophia,” she politely replied, ”And you are?”

Sophia thought for a while, two fresh words were acquired by her memory.  First was Yuan-ta.  For her it sounded like a girl’s name from her village and secondly was Pyromancer.  Reading books and being mentored by a mage for years did not even helped her encountered the word so she assumed it has something to do with the skill she proudly demonstrated earlier.  She nodded at Yuan-ta and pointed at her back where she carried her old and worn bedroll.

Yu looked at the bag and cringed. "I don't even need to see it to know what is inside..." He muttered to himself, perhaps a bit too loudly. "Would you like to use mine tonight? A Nord might be something besides the fire to keep me from freezing to death in this slowly dying always winter hell..."

"Who's this?" said Thorald as he marched into Drystan's camp. He looked between the blind elf and the dirty girl and raised a bushy eyebrow. He looked at Drystan and said, "It seems that you have more people than you claimed to have had earlier."

"These are travelers that we have offered hospitality to for the time being." replied Drystan dryly.

"For the time being? Not to be of any use on your journey?"

"That depends on what they want and what they offer. For example, we could use a learned scholar such as the monk here. The girl has some skill with fire. It could be useful in a pinch, but we'll see. For the time being, we are merely traveling with them to Whiterun as you are."

((I'm having "Up" flashbacks now. XD))

"Yu, quit moving," Noxa scolded lightly. But she was perfectly happy to have a reason to watch the light show.

She had watched the Nord girl with pity at first, but that turned easily enough to appreciation. Most of the magic she'd seen had been in the hands of Thalmor Justicars; stiff sorts at the best of times, maliciously unpleasant the rest of the time, and not given to harmlessly showing their skills. And no wonder the poor thing was starved; Noxa's experience with the proud Nordic folk prior to this had not lead her to believe they were particularly accommodating of the magical arts, especially in one of their own.

And it seemed the Stormcloak—Thorald, wasn't it?—was a typical Nord in that regard, given that he hadn't batted an eye at the blind priest's appearance but charged over full of bluster when the spell was cast. Or perhaps he was just being unpleasant and suspicious, Noxa would just as soon believe the one as the other.

The slithery creature’s offer was quite awkward.  The farm girl hasn’t mingled with any other race except from the Nord farmers in her village.  His presence did not appease her taste and his overall structure which looks like a combination of snake, lizard and crocodile gave her creeps.  She watched the Argonian’s gestures pondering about his offer.

But it seems that the food he had given her started to do its job.  Sophia finally noticed the other members of the group – An Imperial lady taking on the Argonian’s measurement, an irritated Orc, a blind Altmer, an Elf which she assumed the leader of the group because he was talking diplomatic and that Nord with a beard which dazed her - natural obsession that she can’t help.

Shaking the bewilderment off, Sophia walked close by the fire trying to blend in with her newly found comrades and took the opportunity to warm her freezing body.

She listened closely as the Elf and the blue-cloaked warrior talked completely forgetting about Yu’s offer.

Septimus was oblivious to all but a sudden gust wind that chilled him to his very bones, through cloak and enchantment. He then suddenly walked to the nord, and then brazenly dumped his bulky cloak upon her.

As he did so, his silk garment was revealed, shining and dazzling in the moon and firelight.
