shadow not showing up in game, but is visible in editor?

i looked for an answer before making this thread, and since the "info" threads constantly have people running you over with their own questions instead of answering you, i made this post.

i am a making a def from scratch. i have the above part visible, but i need the shadow to be visible when i play the game. this is for a water object, and i want the shadow to be BENEATH the waves, and not above it. right now, the only way i can get the shadow to show up in the editor is by using an external shadow file for the def. but it doesn't show up in game. just the def above the waves.

(edit: if it helps any, the def doesn't look right in h3deftool either.)

msg/msk problem most likely.

If you were making the sharks from MM7 that would be awesome/a great thing to face while at sea

Well, if you manage to hide the bottom, which is easy, you can get something close to night sky effects, because stars on it are animated. I've seen many chinese maps using this effect and it was creative. Several objects in editor may look ugly alone, but used in right conjuncture they rock. All the 8th level dwellings for example. Or troll bridge.

i get what you mean now. i never thought about using the animations in the 8th level buildings, i got rid of all of them for my game(i have 2 of the same defs for 7th and 8th). i'll have to give some of those a little more consideration.

ok, i thought i found the fix for my shark. i took a look at the "zshadow" defs(opened them up in h3deftool, and in ps), and found that they are 2-layered, and in rgb color format. now, i had thought that rgb color format wasn't read by the game, but i guess not. the "zshadow" defs work fine in the game, however, when i try to recreate the effect, and add the shark fin to the upper layer, i get a multi-colored jumble of garbage when making the def. anyone got any insight on this? i'm chasing the answer, and getting nowhere.

(Edit: strange. after years of people modding, NOBODY knows the answer to this question.)

You just could upload your def aside with asking. People made about 6000 new objects for the game before your mod, animated, transparent, invisible, levitating, floating, composed objects, everything. When I made a floating island, I also needed a different def for the shadow, not big deal.

There is always a solution, but it is easier to find it when analyzing the already done def.

ok, i will upload the def soon. for now it is only one frame, no animation. i will animate it when i found out why the shadow doesn't work.

edit: ok, here is the def. i will also post it on the other thread, to see if it can be helped.
shark def

and, speaking of 6000 objects, salamandre, where could i find these? of all the kinds you mentioned, i have only seen 3000 or so... did you ever upload your floating island, or are you keeping that all to yourself?
