Yeah, I've been debating buying it for that reason. Online only DRM when I only want to play single player sucks. I've had to wait hours for a chat session to resolve ME3 problems because of the online only DRM if I actually wanted to use the preorder stuff.

Only until we as players speak with our wallets and refuse to buy games with online DRM will developers stop using it.  I'm not buying SimCity or any game that uses online DRM.  I don't care what it is.

I don't know if I have the will to vote with my wallet. I really wanna order this game

I'm probably gonna grab it a month or two from now as usual and I'm assuming the servers will be smooth by then. If not, I will send them a strongly-worded email, and it will cost them a few cents in manpower for the few seconds the guy looks at it before deleting it.

Wow, I did not know this. I'm so tired of that kind of snow. I'm totally not buying until I hear about that being solved.

It's totally ironic.  We don't want to lose a small percentage of our revenue due to piracy, so we just kill the entire product with DRM so nobody can play it.

I even turned my back on Diablo 3 because of DRM (if that means you have to be on-line even on single player), however maybe we should start to accept it as a standard of next generation computer games or something. Maybe in the future people wont say how come i need to have internet to be able to play this just like we dont say how come I need to own a computer to be able to play this. Still irritates me and gets me mad as hell though.

Yeah, except computer hardware is sorta kinda important to playing a computer game , and being online & registered to play a computer game is entirely unnecessary.

I really have no clue which direction it's ultimately going to end up going in. Too hard to call.

One would think they would have to react and remove the DRM, this is commercial suicide if there ever was one. Btw. posting this here because it's so on-topic, in case somebody hadn't seen it:

I also came across this petition, I guess it never hurts to give your voice to show that you are dissatisfied:

more like economist logic.

the future? I guess tablet PCs, with a limited version of internet where you can't download or upload anything unless you pay with it. games will be dematerialized and only available for paid download, so that you can't buy them already used. also it will be impossible to copy them on another PC, and if you lose them due to a problem with your computer, you will have to pay for them again.

Not really. Seeing that f2p games are a source of fortune due to paid extras, I think f2p MMOs/MOBAs will dominate even more. See Dota2, World of Tanks and so on.

No thanks.

Seriously, though - aside from the DRM issue, which is reason enough for me to avoid the game - why does every game these days try to force me to interact with other people online?  I know that's a draw for some people, but not for me.  At least give me the option.  But this Sim City seems like it is designed around the idea that it takes a village to... well, raise a village.  The allure of Sim City has always been to create a sprawling metropolis that had everything in it you can imagine.  Now I gotta rely on some stranger to help me make a city that can actually function?

Pbbbbt...  I'd rather play solitaire than this game.

This is what I got from the review.

The new Sim City forces you to log into their online server.  One reason is for DRM.  But the other is because any city you create MUST exist in a "region" simultaneously with the cities of other individuals who are online.  And they purposely limit the size of the city you are allowed to build to encourage you to have your city focus on one aspect (say, tourism) rather than specializing in everything.  That way you have to interact with other users' cities so that your city can function better.  Ah, since I built a lot of residential area, I don't really have room for shopping centers, so I gotta convince my neighbor to build shopping centers to my citizens can go over there and shop, and all his citizens can come to my city to live.

WTF?

I don't want to interact with anyone else.  I want to build a city that does everything.  That's the whole frickin' point of Sim City!

But I get it.  Maybe some people like that kind of forced interaction.  But why not build a game that ALLOWS me to play the game offline where I can build a big city by myself, and let the people who want to play together in the sandbox play that way?  Why force me to join your little social experiment, EA?

GOD, it drives me crazy.  I interact with people all day.  Can't I just have a few minutes of peace to play a game at my own pace, on my own schedule, and free from all the other idiots out there?
