Agree, Denmark sucked balls and Norway should have won by a landslide (not that any song this year made a real impression on me). But of course Denmark is going to win on hometurf as they were empowered by the soil itself.

We Are One!

Learn to bake the perfect Danish Winnerbread here!

Only Teardrops too is according to the perfect recipe: Ethnic flutes, Ruslana drums, wind in hair, fire on stage and a pretty barefoot girl. Not bad at all even if the song is boring and repititive. Mix the ingredients well and you can't lose, apparently, Congratulations!

Thank you for an Amazing show.
I was expecting more from the hyped rumour about Zlatan participating somehow, and ABB made intro was anonymous but fitted the Olympic parade well, nice. Loreen is still great. And Lynda Woodruff Sarah Dawn Finer is now officially crowned as the Swedish Queen of Ballads! The best thing with the Swedishness show is that it was 99 % totally true.

The result collection gave us this gem: Latvian guy boasts with his Swedish talking skills: "Petra Mede, you look gorgeous tonight!" And Petra answers: "Thank you Rolf, you have a very beautiful name." LOL

The final thumbs:

France - Blues/jazz that doesn't rock. Perhaps the guitarist didn't sell his soul at the crossroads?

Spain - Partially the same ingredients as Denmark's but more tasteful. And it rocks!

Germany - Cut and paste: last years winner! disco disco! our cool synthesizer we got last christmas! Very cheap.

UK - Very traditional and more than a bit boring, but it's obvious that Bonnie can handle an arena.

Sweden - The best performance Robin ever made with You. There's a lot of quality in this song but it needs time, in Sweden he won after performing three different weekly competitions, yesterday he had only three minutes to make an impact.

Italy - Competent singer in a well written song.

I think this contest had (in summary) the lowest quality from all contests in the last 5 years. Especially the bands from the bigger countries were horrible.

Germany? 17 points were about 18 too much. Legs, tits, blonde hair...no voice....and plagiarism aswell...

UK? Oh Bonny...you have been one of the greatest female singers around the 80ies...but time has passed...now you're a granny without a voice.

France?....let's do not even start..

....

Too many ballades...not many power songs.

And even denmark was nothing special...similar to germany...but a voice at least...

And I am very sure, you can put a greek monkey on stage and let him sing the national anthem of North Korea, cyprus will still give 12 points..

ok, i have calmed down, slept over it and now i am ready to FULLY distill my thoughts into a review.

EUR*O*VISION 2013

This year was... absolutely fantastic. I know that there will be a lot of criticism w/r/t the Winner and while i understand people being underwhelmed by Emmelie's victory it doesn't take away many of the other great things about this contest:

Production
This was easily the best Eurovision production in a long, long time. Of the years I've seen, it was indisputably the best. Everything, from the great interval acts, over the beautiful stage to the GORGEOUS butterflies was top notch. Sarah Dawn Finer is the star of our time and I hope Lynda Woodruff makes a cameo appearance in every Eurovision song contest from now on.

I only have two minor reservation:

1) the camera work in some entries was not as good as it could have been (notably Greece's entry which had a LOT going on onstage, yet the camera's chose to focus on the singers siging :-/)

2) the vote tallying was rather sloppy (my personal favourite: showing that the Netherlands gave Belgium 12pts BEFORE THEIR SPOKESPERSON EVEN ANNOUNCED IT )

But honestly, these two are only minor issues and they didn't tarnish the experience for me in any way.

The Host
Petra Mede... I mean, I was sceptical at first, i'll have to admit. I did not think one individual could carry the job of hosting the contest on her own, but boy did Petra prove me wrong or WHAT?

This entire experience wouldn't have been the same stellar experience without Petra Mede. She was fun, dramatic yet at the same time professional and gracious. The living embodiment of what I think Eurovision should be really: a Proper, but nevertheless fun spectacle.

Petra's "Swedish Smörgåsbord Song" was the highlight of the evening (wait can I actually commit to that? hmm. Well, *one* of the highlights, then)

All-in-all, last night's finale was without question one of the best hosted, best produced live shows of all time and i'm so happy to have been able to watch it unfold live.

Note that we didn't even get to the actual songs yet. This will change though, or rather: NOW

The Scoreboard
One of my main sources of overall satisfaction with this contest comes from the ultimate scoreboard at the end of finale night. I wasn't too fond of 2012's (Serbia/Azerbaijan/Albania in the top5 X__X) and 2011's condemned Düsseldorf2011 as a bottom 2 edition for me (i pretty much HATE that entire top5 X____________X)

This year though, I have only some minor complaints. Perfection is VERY hard to accomplish, but this year can really damn close. All my favourites (except Bulgaria and San Marino) made the finals, and most of them did really well to. Additionally, many of my least favourites did really poorly. Sorry, but Cascada flopping SO hard and finishing outside of the top20 and below bonnie tyler is such righteous vindication i can't even.

I am also sooooo happy so many randoms did so well. Malta, The Netherlands and Hungary making the TOP10 over Moldova, Romania and Georgia is SO unexpected and SO hilarious, I love it actually. If you had told me Belgium would finish in the TOP12, de facto winning the Fangirl vote over Ireland  and Sweden prior to the vote tally, i would have declared you a madman, but here we are.

Naturally, not everything was perfect (Russia finishing in the top FIVE X__X; Armenia and Georgia qualifying over San Marino and Bulgaria; Finland and France finishing in the bottom tier) but despite it all i'm really satisfied with these results and I say: GOOD JOB, EUROPE ^__^

Ok, let's discuss the SONGS:

Albania
An entertaining, if dated rock song about national identity. I understand people being underwhelmed by this, but i really liked it. ^__^
There's a story to this song, so it's not like the empty, generic songs the Soviets bombard us with on the regular. I wish they qualified :-(

that being said, Bledar's teeth scared the living daylights out of me.

Armenia
Homely Blahnet qualifying. X__X I can't even.

You know, Albania may have been dated rock, but this is even MORE dated on top of being just an empty, generic, lame Charity Song. Did i mention this was also really boring?

At least it gave Armenia its WORST finale placement ever HOOZ DA WAN WITH CLEVA FACE NOW???

Austria
Such a wasted opportunity. The staging on this one is really uninspired (i actually carried natalia to #12 on my preshow rankings BECAUSE I loved her staging at the finale so much) and I don't disagree with it not qualifying.

Azerbaijlan
You know, I think FARID may have been "Da Wan Wiff Cleva Face" the Dorians were referring to (). Seriously though, bombarding all the viewers with bedroom eyes is HILARIOUS, rly.

What is also hilarious: their implied homoerotic act (::insert a joke about "coming out" here:. The act (and Farid's acting during the song) pretty much turned this saccharine, dull ballad into a believable love song!! I am really glad Azerbaijan did well this year, hopefully they keep delivering stuff like THIS in the future and not crap like Ell/Nikki X__X

Point of interest: Azerbaijan now placed in every top5 slot in the past five years: 2009: 3rd, 2010: 5th, 2011: 1st, 2012: 4th, 2013: 2nd.

Belarus
lol. In last night's fuss, i forgot Belarus even QUALIFIED for the final . Idk what else there is to add about So-gay-oh what i hadn't said already. It's an entertaining, light-hearted mid-noughties pop song that I also happen to like for those very reasons. And her choreography is HILARIOUS.

GJ on giving us Belarus' second best result EVER, alyona.

Belgium
I still... do NOT understand how this finished 12th. It baffles my mind, really. I still do not get what's so good about this awful fey song, about roberto's naked insecurity when singing this (ok maybe i do, lol) or about his inability to sing.

But i actually love that it did well?

When I was watching the finale live, i actually was in a chatroom discussing this and one of the people inside implied that I might short-circuit from combined Joy/disgust if Roberto placed in the top10. Well, I did short-circuit, I guess.

idk i still think this is Not A Good Song, but i'll have to admit that I am warming up to it!! Roberto's attempts at smyze'ing (-- Tyra Banks) weren't nearly as successful was Farid's, but that also made them lol. I absolutely LOVE that Robertoad won the imaginary tug-o'-war for the Fangirls' hearts over the likes of Robin Stjernberg and Ryan Dolan.

What makes this all better is that NO ONE predicted this outcome. I absolutely love randomness, but this has to be one of the most RANDOM placements i've ever seen on Eurovision. Particularly because the bookmakers gave us merely a small chance to qualify to the finals, and we had the LOWEST odds of any entry that made the finale, but still somehow made the top12. It's one of the better Underdog Stories for tihs year, and tbh this year had PLENTY of good ones.

God, i love this contest sometimes.

Conclusion: Restrospective Robertoad appreciation? =O

Bulgaria
Hilarious trainwreck <3

Croatia
Ugh these six. They were a group of stank people who patted themselves on the back for their singing abilities and their song... was lame and, as the title implied, miserable. Their act is awkwardly homoerotic, but not in a good way.

Cyprus
Remember when I pegged this as placing one-but-last in its semi final and 38th overall?

Well it did. =)

Denmark
ok.

So i can understand this being a lame winner, i really do. What i don't understand is people being OUTRAGED by this winning and like... accusing the contest of rigging it for Denmark o__O

Only Teardrops is a really good blend of ethic and contemporary, which makes it very accessible to the masses, yet simultaneously unique in its own aspects. Obviously, if you look more closely, you can find it repetitive and not that special, but what of it? Only Teardrops is the EXACT kind of song that can win the contest because it's catchy enough without sounding too cheap or being too heavy to stomach. In that aspect, it's a lot like Satellite.

Personally, I love Only Teardrops but this is more due to it being EXACTLY my flavour of music than anything else. Still, it's a satisfying winner imo. dwi.

Estonia
Ballads are the most difficult songs to rate preshow because EVERYTHING depends on how it is performed onstage. Preshow, Birgit seemed like your average young singer singing your average saccharine love ballad. Once onstage though, she became a significantly more magnetic and charming presence and I really warmed up to her. I love Estonia this year

Point of interest: Birgit is preggers :-)

Finland
Idk who to blame about Finland's outrageously poor placment: the homophobic Soviet audiences or the elitist, fun-hating southron juries. In any case this was absolutely ROBBED. This performance was PERFECT.

France
The public not *getting* France was regrettable but predictable. Whatever. I LOVED Amandine's vividly deranged performance and she can be proud of herself ^__^

F.Y.R. of Macedonia
This was an absolutely trainwreck. I cannot say i liked the song, but i like Lozano and Esma separately I guess. Also, Esma's dress making her look like a half-melted red velvet cake <3

Georgia
Meh, Georgia was alright... UNTILL I FOUND OUT *THEY* WERE THE 10TH PLACER THAT ROBBED US OF SAN MARINOWNAGE.

eh whatever. I can't rly be bothered to have strong emotions about Georgia really. They were pandering tools that gave Georgia it's worst Finale Result EVERRRR. WILL THE 2013OWNAGE NEVER CEASE???? (spoiler: no)

Germany
In the herioc epic that is Eurovision 2013, Cascada was the proverbial dragon that needed to be slain for a good outcome. Luckily the dragon slayed herself <3

Like. This was the PREDICTED WINNER and placed outside of the top21. Below Bonnie Tyler. BELOW LITHUANIA. I feel so vindicated.

Greece
Greece is one of the best countries in eurovision because they LOVE fun and humour, so it is only fitting that their funn(i)est and most humourous entry ever is also one of their best.

Hungary
This finished in the top10, and I LOVED IT.

Preshow, no one really cared for Kedvesem but then it turned into Eurovision equivalent of marmite: like, half of the people who listened to it really didn't care for it, but the other half loved it. There was always some indication that Kedvesem had an UTR fanbase we were all unaware of, but i never expected it to be THIS big lol.

Obviously, this song can be easily seen as boring because it is fragile and rather uneventful but idc. It has grown on me over time. Is it one of my favourites? no, but i like it!

Iceland
Meh. Eythor is cool though.

Ireland
Lmao @ ryan getting the PIMP SPOT and still finishing last. Oh well Only Love Survives was boring, so who cares.

Israel
Static and boring. and such an UGLY dress X__X

Italy
I like Marco. I however do NOT like this song

Latvia
Cringe on legs. I miss the times of brainstorm

Lithuania
Latvia and Lithuania are both horrible @ eurovision, but while lithuania was much better this year, they are actually WORSE than latvia in general. Case in point: this is one of the BEST entries of all time. /

Honestly my Andrius appreciation comes from him being wasted ON STAGE, but he didn't deliver that during the finale. AFTER the finale, though...

Malta
This was fantastic. There's something intrinsically magnetic about a individual's genuine bliss. Gianlucangel is perhaps the most radiant and upbeat person on this planet and combined with a simple feel-good song, it's absolute WIN.

Moldova
This was absolutely beautiful and interesting. One of my favourites for this year.

Montenegro
VODIM TE NA IGRANKU
NA NA NA NA IGRANKU
KU KU KU KU IGRANKU
VODIM TE NA IGRANKU

well screw the fun-hating philistines, this was hilarious.

Norway
Eh. I'll have to admit that while I quite appreciate Maggie Burger bringing the Khaleesi Realness (-- Ana Matronic), it'll always prefer something warm and melodic to something cold and modern. Just a matter of taste, I suppose.

The Netherlands
The success story of Anouk should teach all the small countries that they always have a shot to beat the odds. She's easily the most fascinating contestant this year: She FORCED HERSELF ON THE DUTCH NATIONAL BROADCASTER to pick her for the contest, yet once picked she never really seemed to care. She was an underdog to the audience, but a rude cow to both interviewers (Anouk literally walking past *every* journalist that tried interviewing her lolol) and organizers alike (Petra: "So anouk do you want to perform in the first or second half? " Anouk: "i dunno, WHO CARES ::shrug::"

As for Birds, it's one of the better small, fragile songs of this year along with Hungary and Malta.

Romania
The Cezar Phenomenon cannot be described. It has to be experienced.

Russia
ugh. This boring, overscoring scrump betch with her song that sounds like Every Ballad Ever and her act straight from 1979. I hate her.

San Marino
;__; In all fairness, Valentina's vocals were *way* off at several intervals, and I think this is why the public didn't vote for her. I tihnk it's a pity. Nevertheless, san marino should just send her and raph siegel every year now, since these two ALWAYS deliver. ^__^

Serbia
Serbia's failure is due to their costumes being change from angel/devil/golden fatsuit woman to three trashy animé characters, which meant the meaning of the song was lost in translation. Also, like, they didn't interact with the camera's .

Oh well, at least we still have Sara's hilarious facial expressions.

Slovenia
Hannah's vocals were really subpar but i still love the act w/e.

Spain
Raquel's vocals were really subpar but i still love the song and the act was neat, so w/e. AT LEAST THEY DIDN'T FINISH LAST, HOORAY <3

Sweden
#lesbianpride

Switzerland
Honestly, I love their song, but their staging kind of ruined it. Just standing in line with vacant smiles plastered all over the faces doesn't do it for me, sorry.

Ukraine
I absolutely loved this. Of course I did lol. It sounds EXACTLY like a disney ballad. The sound effects and incredible backing vocals just transformed this from 'really good' to 'absolutely stellar' for me. One of my all-time favourites.

United Kingdom
I honestly want to feel bad for Bonnie not doing well, but eh, she got over her loss really easily ("oh wait I didn't finish last? OH LOVELY " -- bonnie right after the finale) and 19th is really good for the UK, so ()

1. Ukraine
2. Greece
3. Finland
4. The Netherlands
5. Malta
6. Moldova
7. Denmark
8. Azerbaijan
9. Romania
10. Estonia
11. France
